‪I have greatly enjoyed attending art show openings at the Frank Bette Center for the Arts. They feature a variety of shows that bring people in from throughout the East Bay Area. The quality of the shows are quite good.‬

‪My opinion will surely be in the minority, but I love the art of painting too much to say this is a great place. As I live fairly close, I've gone there for several years and rarely do I see much in the way of interesting art...I see plenty of illustrations, some very skillful, but most seem disinterested in connecting with the great artists like Picasso or Matisee....or later Georgia O'Keefe and Alice Neal the portrait painter. Most probably have no clue about other Modern painters; some of the unique ones like Albert Pinkham Ryder, Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington, Dorothea Tanning, Rothko, Max Ernst, Philip Guston, Gorky, Chaim Soutine...etc. You can bet most of the people putting work up here have no clue about the heritage of painting. It's really a place for hobbyists with little curiosity about the Art Form itself.
For me Painting is an ongoing exploration with bold discoveries and excitement playing off the styles that made Modern Art so great; Surrealism, Expressionism, Fauvism, the work here is very pedestrian stuff heavy on the Plein Air and Commercial Calendar art. Rarely do I see a unique artists here....and sadly, at Openings, the crowd is all older folks (like me).
The art of Painting has been diagnosed as being dead for a while in the Art Trade magazines. I don't think so, but places like this mostly support the safe art of folks who will never rise above the mediocre.‬

‪Nice to see the different artists work. I did not care for some of it personally but it was nicely done and the center is nice. At the time I visited this location, I was the only one in the gallery. But they have lots of activities that go on and there is always busy work around the gallery. Staff was nice and informative. ‬

‪Revolving collection of art by local professional artists, all at reasonable prices. Wide variety of media and subjects. Lots of local scenes from the annual Plein Aire festival. Classes in many media:One day or several weeks Beautiful aprons & quilted specialties. paper boxes, wood turned & ceramic bowls. LOTS of creativity.
Something for the entire family.‬

‪This place is truly a labor of love. Run by volunteers (after the stellar Debra Owen stepped down as paid administrator), it continues on through sheer strength of will, careful management, and generous donations. Frank Bette donated this yellow Edwardian house when he died, in hope of a place for "creative doings". As a consummate artist, painter, and craftsman, Frank would have been proud. FBCA hosts affordable classes, body paint jams, poetry slams, musical performances, and of course, visual art exhiibits. Exhibits - based on their "endless call for art" - change every month or two, and the FBCA hosts two unique events. Alameda on Camera doles out a territory map, and each of 40 +- selected photographers has 24 hours in April to capture their little section of this photogenic city's spirit. FBCA also hosts a "Plein Air Paintout" where plein air artists from all over the world gather to translate light and paint into magic. Of course, there is art for sale here. Quality ranges from modestly-priced advanced amateur to extremely sophisticated fine-art pieces. This is a family-friendly gallery; you may see some tasteful nudity but no graphic sexual images.
This is definitely a great place to spend an hour soaking up creativity, or even more time expressing creativity of your own.
FBCA is also the host of the first regularly-scheduled body painting jam on the west coast. (full disclosure, I host it).‬
