‪My family knew sailors who served on CV-8 when she was sunk. I served on two ships in the 60s. The ship has numerous aircraft static displays from ww2 prop to 1980 jets. CV12 was the Apollo 11, et al, recovery ship & they have a display about it. Make sure you walk the lower decks: equipment shops, enlisted & officer berthing, sick bay, & special exhibits. The special docent tours cost extra but are well worth it. Brought back 50+ year memories. ‬

‪Great carrier, aircraft, and space museum. Most of the aircraft are located on the hanger deck. Full access to flight deck and hanger deck and selected lower decks. There were additional tours at a additional cost to tour the engine room or bridge. Several retired military that love to answer questions about anything you see. Great visit. We spent about three hours there. Took a Uber from wharf area and back. No problems‬

‪This was my first time to visit a decommissioned aircraft carrier. I was particularly surprised to learn the Hornet picked up Neil Armstrong (and team) after returning from the moon. The volunteer docents on the ship were informative and helpful. The ship is fascinating to tour.‬

‪Welcome aboard the USS Hornet (CV-12).

Amazing visit to the USS Hornet (CV-12), an Essex-class aircraft carrier which was built to serve the United States Navy during World War II. She was the eighth battleship to be named the USS Hornet. She was named to honor the fallen USS Hornet (CV-8) which sunk at the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands while protecting US forces holding Guadalcanal. Watch the movie or ask a guide (who may have served) to learn more about her role in history in the Pacific during World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam and the Space Race to the Moon.

During World War II, she was assigned to the Fast Carrier Task Force, the navy's primary offensive force during the Pacific War. She is one of the most decorated ships of the US Navy. The USS Hornet (CV-12) was awarded nine Battle Stars for Pacific service in World War II. Under air attack 59 times, she was never seriously damaged. She played a major role in Pacific amphibious landings and airstrikes with many pilots achieving "Ace in a Day" status. After World War II, she helped bring the troops back to the US in Operation Magic Carpet.

During the Apollo program on July 24, 1969, the USS Hornet recovered Apollo 11 astronauts, Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Mike Collins, as they returned from their historic walk on the moon. She recovered Apollo 12 astronauts Charles Conrad, Jr., Alan L. Bean, and Richard F. Gordon, Jr. a few months later.

Today, you can tour this historic aircraft carrier and explore the flight deck, planes in the hangar, sickbay, crew quarters, torpedo room, mess hall and more. Learn about Women in the Military, the Space Race and Apollo Splashdown and the Evolution of Aircraft carriers. Take a guided tour to hear about life on the USS Hornet and access some behind the scenes areas. Enjoy the beautiful bay views from the flight deck.

We used a reciprocal benefits with NARM for admission which is usually $20 per adult. Plenty of parking. Such an interesting part of history.‬

‪There is so much to see on this retired aircraft carrier. It’s actually one of the smaller aircraft carriers but it’s still massive. They have am Apollo space museum on the hangar deck and a good selection of planes on the flight deck. Admission was very reasonable and the ship is pretty much restored to its time in service.‬

Thank you for writing a review. We can hardly wait to completely re-open when the virus restrictions are lifted. You will need to come back at least a couple of times to see what is currently off-limits inside the ship.

‪If you have never been to an aircraft carrier, check this one out. They are like a floating city, and clamering around this ship is a perfect activity for hyper boy scouts. We had a great time‬

Thank you for writing a review. Of course, with the quarantine shutdowns the Museum is closed until at least the first week of May. Perhaps longer. Please check our website for re-opening information (www.uss-hornet.org).

‪Our experience in the USS Hornet was absolutely execellent. The crew was really nice and knowledgeable. We had the opportunity to have a guided tour on the flight deck by Steven, really nice and kind former navy crew and airline pilot who made it an amazing experience and provided us with loads of information not only about the ship itself but also about the flight operations onboard. Both the ship and the aircrafts parked in it are absolutely astonishing and very well kept. Should we come back to San Francisco, we would definitely visit it again. ‬

‪Para los apasionados es un lugar que no hay que dejar de visitar lugar. No es muy populoso y uno se puede mover con espacio. Es recomendable conocer la historia antes de visitarlo para sacarle provecho a toda la historia que tiene el buque ‬

‪Not a whole lot on the flight deck to see but nice view of the city. Best part of the experience for me was the nisei exhibit. I learned so much!‬
