We Kayaked across from the boat launch at the end of Indian Pass Rd. (we stayed in the RV park there for 3 nights...perfect access spot) it was pretty windy but its a very short easy paddle across despite the tidal inlet.
There is a short clearly maked hike as well as a bunch of sand roads...my wife LOVED walking the beach and collecting shells. There are tons of them since its not very easy to access.
We hope to return and kayak the back side of the island. Very beautiful and unspoiled!

Saint Vincent Wildlife Refuge using covid 19 procedures. Very good staff, facilities, doing very good job with injured wildlife.

Not really fair to share a review of a place I haven't visited in so long, but I will never forget it. I'm sure you still have to take a boat (or helicopter!) to get there. It is worth it to see a sandbar deer and utter unspoiled Florida wilderness, which is only going to become more rare.

You can take a $10 shuttle over to St. Vincent's at Indian Pass. There are well-marked trails and miles of unadulterated white sand beaches. Take a picnic lunch and spend the day

Wonderfully organized and worth the visit is you like ecological and historical information of the gulf, apalachicola river system and history of Apalachicola water front.

My wife and I got to stop here this April on our tour of the coast. The St. Vincent NWR is located in the western panhandle of Florida near the town of Apalachicola. It was established in 1968 for the protection and conservation of migratory birds. Our 1st stop was the nice Visitor Center which is located in the historic Fry-Conter house in Apalachicola. We picked up a brochure, checked out the exhibits and got to talk with the volunteer and staff. The refuge is an island and is located about 25 miles away and must be accessed by boat. We enjoyed the nice weather, walking on the beach and enjoying the salt air. We were able to spot many kinds of small animals and birds during our walks. This refuge includes other opportunities for visitors to utilize like the fishing, hunting, biking, kayaking, wildlife viewing, hiking and great photo opportunities. Come and bring your family (especially children), binoculars, camera, water and enjoy what this area of Florida has to offer. This is a wonderful place to see the beauty of the outdoors and enjoy the beautiful weather.

This refuge is on an island and you have to use a boat to get to it. It's a very short trip across a narrow channel but a boat is required. We got on the island and walked to the gulf side and saw one of the most stunning sights I'd ever seen. Garbage, garbage and more garbage. Unbelievable! Since no one lives on the island and there are not may tourists that leaves just one explanation. All that garbage floated in from the Gulf of Mexico. The garbage was only on the Gulf beach and spread out fairly evenly from the water to the tree line. It's a real sobering education about what humans have done to this planet. Our own Gulf of Mexico is just a watery garbage dump. A really really sad sight to see but also very educational about the true state of our planet and our environment. No wonder we all have cancer.

Please Note-this island is not in Apalachicola. It is reached from indian Pass, and then a shuttle to the island. There you have a choice of hanging out on a beach with millions of shells and nice shallow water to play, or walking around on the primitive island. Our trip was for one of the (not to be missed) Friends of St Vincent's wagon tours that are only offered October-January.
The island is primitive and beautiful. It is maintained by the state and the feds to protect the land and all the animals, birds and turtles that live and/or migrate through there. If you enjoy the outdoors, the north Florida landscape and the beach, a day trip can be a wonderful way to spend some time. Just watch out for the sand spurs and "logs" with eyes in the ponds!

This place is a gem. If you are the type of person who wants a Disney experience with animals in pens as you tour then skip the island and drive to Orlando.
If you really love being out in nature, shelling a deserted beach, watching dolphins and seeing eagles, and exercising, then this is your kind of place.
One note of caution: it's real nature so bring heavy duty bug spray (think 100% Deet) and the waters are home to lots of sharks.

This is a secluded island off of Indian Pass 15 miles west of Apalachicola. Perfect for birding, shelling and looking for ancient Indian chards. Joey Romanelli runs a shuttle off the pass.

Hi, thanks for your help. We will be there in Mid March. The web site for the wildlife refuge doesn't seem to offer much info about touring, etc. Could you point me to other online resources?
