‪This is an AMAZING tour of both the Wallace River and the Altun Ha Mayan Ruins.

The tour starts on a river boat. It has 2- 200hp outboard motors and is so much fun because it's so fast!!! I felt very safe as the boat's operator took us around the tip of Belize City via the ocean. We all had to wear life jackets during this part. It was exhilarating and a WONDERFUL way to see the coastline of Belize City!

Very soon, you arrive at the mouth of the Wallace River. The operator shuts off the boat and you wait... Just when we were wondering what was happening, the nose of a manatee popped up out of the water, just to say hi! The operators know that the manatees are very curious about the boats, so they do this to lure them to the surface so that the tourists can catch a glimpse of these magnificent animals!

As we continued on, we stopped multiple times on our 2-hour trip down on the Wallace River into the main land of Belize. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable and gave us so much information about both Belize, the countryside we were in, and the animals we encountered. They stopped the boat several times so that we could see and take pictures of numerous iguanas, 3 crocodiles, and 2 different groups of 4-5 howler monkeys! It was amazing! What a treat to see these creatures in their natural environment!

At the midway point in the day, they took us to a small but quaint riverside resort. Lunch was available in the form of either a hamburger and fries or a more traditional Belizean lunch consisting of baked chicken, rice and beans, coleslaw, and plantains. There was a nominal fee of $9. The lunch stop lasted about 45 minutes in a very quaint shared space where there were bathrooms available to freshen up.

We then boarded a large bus/coach that took us further inland. The guide used this opportunity to share an abundance of information about the culture of Belize. She spoke of the languages, demographics, lack of racism, economic challenges and advantages, along with tons of history if you asked. This was a real treat as we really felt like we got to see the "real" Belize while we were on this bus.

As you arrive at the ruins, the guide gives you even more information about the site. The area is breathtaking and almost humbling as you walk into the main plaza where the ruins stand. We were very lucky the day we went as it hadn't been raining. So, we were able to climb the ruins. If you get a chance to, you MUST make sure to climb the tallest building. The view atop the ruin and looking over the canopy of the jungle is incredible!

Just when we thought we couldn't do anymore, it was time to go. We all boarded the motor coach for the hour ride back to Belize City. The tour guide said that this is the time that they normally allow the guests to take a bit of a siesta, and a lot of us did! The bus was very quiet and peaceful as we watched the landscape of Belize go by.

The bus was cool with great air conditioning.

I would recommend taking sunscreen with you as there is no protection from the sun at the ruins. The riverboat does have a hard top, but of course that won't protect you at all times depending on which way the boat is moving.

Also, make sure to take a large water bottle. They offer you bags (yes, bags...it was so neat!) of water that you can refill your water bottle with while you are on the boat. But, of course if you stay hydrated, you'll need more than that. There is also an opportunity to buy water at the shops by the ruin.

Wear comfortable clothing and shoes.

Use insect repellent.

Take your camera and video cameras. You won't want to miss the monkeys playing in the trees!‬

‪The trip began with a boat ride up the Wallace River. It was about a 2 hour comfortable ride where we saw various wildlife. From there a bus ride to the ruins. The ruins site was very cool and educational. Melissa, our guide, was SUPER. Very friendly and imformative. Fun time‬

‪No disrespect to the guides. The took an otherwise mundane trip and kept us informed and entertained. We started with an air conditioned bus ride through the streets of Belize City. Our guides provided a humourus color commentary on Belizeian life and history. After about 90 minutes, much of it on narrow roads - so narrow our bus had to steer right when on coming traffic approached. The Altun-ha site was interesting - but underwhelming. The guides made up for the grandeur that wasn't with more humourus commentary. Clean rest rooms were available at the site. Local vendors were at the site, but we did not have time to shop and we were encouraged not to support vendors with live animals. From Altun-ha, we were bussed to the Black Orchid Resort. We had 30 minutes for food and rest-room breaks. The food choice was either hamburgers or Belizeian chicken fricasse with rice and beans. The chicken fricasse was tasty and the rice had an interesting and light sweet cinammon flavor that was a nice contrast to the savory chicken.

From the Black Orchid resort, we boarded motor boats that accomodated about twenty people each. The guides were informative and funny along the way. We started out nice and slow and it seemed we would take a leisurely trip down the river Wallace and enjoy the iguanas and howler monkeys. The slow leisurely ride lasted just a few minutes before the Captain put us into high speed chase mode. Stopping periodically for wildlife.

The trip was well organized, well staffed but, perhaps not as well timed to this reviewers liking.‬

‪We booked the Altun Ha Mayan Site & River Wallace excursion on board the Carnival Dream. Kendra and Lee? were wonderful! They had precise and informative information on the Altun Ha Mayan Ruins that we would have never know if we did not take the tour. The bus ride was a bit bumpy but worth every minute. Once we finished the tour of the ruins we were taken to the Wallace River. I wished I could remember the names of the 2 guys on the boat. Can't they were great. Our boat driver/captain had eyes in the back of his head I swear, he could spot things before they were visual to anyone. We saw Howler monkeys in the trees, porcupine, crocs (lots of crocs big and little) Iguanas-beautiful big, small, hanging out in trees on the shores you name it. To top off the trip at the mouth of the River and the ocean we were privileged to see dolphins playing in the waters. Thanks Kendra' group of guides. You guys were awesome! I want to come back to Belize‬

‪We booked through Carnival with Baka Bush tours for an excursion to the Xunantunich Mayan Ruins. Our tour guides were awesome!! They were willing to take any questions, interesting, and very informative. It was about a 1.5 hour bus ride and they made the time pass quickly. Once there, the guide was great and he knew so much information. We climbed to the top of El Castillo and the view was amazing! There were careful and watched everyone closely. The lunch was good and it gave you a taste of the local food. On the bus ride home, they let everyone sleep since we were all wore out from climbing and the sun. The bus ride was long but the experience was great and I would highly recommend this tour just for guides.‬

‪We booked this tour through Carnival and were extremely pleased with Bak-A-Bush guides, Mirasol and Louverne! We were entertained during the long bus ride, and thoroughly enjoyed the meal at San Ignacio after the Ruins.
From San Ignacio, you have to cross the Mopan River, by Hand Cranked Ferry.

On the other side, we had vans awaiting to drive us a mile up the hill to the Park.
Make sure you climb theCastillo. The Mayan Rulers bowed down at each step as they climbed, and made their way to the top. They would duck behind stone entrances, and re-appear as if by magic, higher up! I was breathing pretty hard on my climb, and at several points had to crawl with my hands, but kept going! Descending is not a joke, be careful!
I hope to return to Xunantunich and climb to the top again! There are reproduction stone carvings that have been placed atop the originals to preserve them. I will add photos if I can. Hope you are lucky enough to get Mirasol or Louverne as your guides!‬
