‪Temporarily closed but still worth a look‬

‪The T.R.R. Cobb House has occupied three locations since it was built in 1842 but the Greek Revival structure with its signature octagon wings and imposing two-story portico with Doric columns has always maintained its reputation as a stately mansion that defined the architecture of the antebellum era. Originally located at 194 Prince Avenue in Athens, the house was a gift to T.R.R. Cobb from his father-in-law. Cobb left an indelible mark on the history of Athens and Georgia as one of the state's greatest lawyers, an advocate of education and religion, an officer in the Confederate Army, an ardent Southern Nationalist, a supporter of slavery and the author of the Confederate Constitution. Following his death in 1862, his widow lived in the house until 1873. Threatened with demolition, it was moved to Stone Mountain State Park in 1984. Due to lack of funding, it was never restored and languished for nearly 20 years before the Watson-Brown Foundation bought the house in 2004 and moved it to its current site at 175 Hill Street in Athens' Cobbham Historic District, about two blocks from its original site. It was restored to his appearance in 1850 and opened to the public as a house museum in 2007. Although it is temporarily closed because of the COVID, it remains a beautiful attraction. Curiously, its stature on the National Register of Historic Places is as discombobulated as its geographic history. It was added to the NRHP in 1975, de-listed in 1985, then re-listed in 2013.‬

‪The house that moved twice !‬
سبتمبر 2019
‪A really interesting house and an even better story of how it was moved in 1985 to save it and it sat in pieces until 2005 when it was put back together here. Its also one of the few museums you'll go to that are free !‬

‪Interesting old house‬

‪This antebellum house is an interesting walk through history. I wished they had a bit more about TRR Cobb. I didn't realize that he was the principal author of the Confederate constitution until after I left. I also noticed that he had Georgia law reporter books with his name on them. I'm not sure how he swung that. Being a lawyer, I would have liked to learn a bit more about his background and role in starting UGA college of law. Anyway, it is worth a short stop and its free. I took me only about 15 mins to walk through.‬

‪Interesting history‬

‪It was a great place to stop in and check out, but it only took about 10 minutes to look around. Probably because the upstairs is off limits, it seemed like their offices, so there's only about 4 rooms to look at on the main floor, however if you love history and especially historical interiors, it's something to check out. It's free.‬

‪With a graphic printed layout of the house and narrative descriptions of each room to carry as wife and I walked through it was WELL WORTH the visit! Artifacts, history of the house, Cobb family, all enlightening.‬

‪Lovely Historic Home‬
أغسطس 2017
‪I saw that this was in the Top 10 sites for the Athens area so visited it. I was not disappointed! The home has been mostly restored and furnished with period furniture and decorations. The tour is self-guided but one of staff was available to answer questions. I asked her to open one of the armoires so I could see the inside which she did. There were also paintings of the battle of Fredericksburg where General Cobb died. There's also an extensive library on the Civil War and history of the South upstairs so snap a photo of the titles so you can search for copies of the books for your own library. There was a map showing when the various portions of the house were added as well as a timeline detailing the two moves. And there are shadow boxes of period artifacts like bullets and electrical fuses. They have also cut away sections of the walls in several places so you can see the inner construction of the home... fascinating. Definitely worth an hour of your time.‬

‪Interesting history but...‬

‪The house has an interesting history, especially the part where it was moved some 70 miles to Stone Mountain in 1985, left alone for 20 years, then moved back. Most of the furnishings are not original and the oil paintings are photo reproductions.‬

‪That is what I took away from this historic site. The gentlemen working on a beautiful fall Saturday, were preparing for upcoming third grade field trips. The restoration of the first floor was impressive, but the examples of how the staff is engaging & educating the young is inspirational! A great example of how important it is to teach youngsters about all of American history! Keep up the good work & thanks for sharing it with us. If you are traveling through Athens, this is a must see!‬

‪Don't miss this antebellum home that exhales the breath of Georgians who shaped their fine state. Life, death, love, children, family, honor, law and war have happened between these walls.‬

‪A Beautiful Piece of History that Has Stood Through the Test of Time!‬
الأصدقاء • مارس 2016
‪The T.R.R. Cobb House is truly a treasure in the downtown historic district in Athens. If these walls could talk, I'm sure they would say many extraordinary things!

This house was the home of Thomas Reade Rootes Cobb, who is considered one of the 'first citizens' in Athens. Just as this amazing home has a unique history, so does Cobb, who was a lawyer, author, educator and a military leader during the Civil War. You will find the history of both the home and the Cobb family as you walk through the many elaborate and beautiful rooms, especially the Octagon Rooms. The hardwood floors are original to the home, as well as much of the furniture.

It took my friends and I a little over an hour to tour the entire house, as we spent some time to talk to our guide about the history of Cobb's family. It is worth the trip to see this magnificent house and to learn about the history. So bring your camera and enjoy the history lesson (especially about how the home was broken into pieces and moved twice...) :)

Happy Museum Hunting!‬
