‪This was our first time doing the hike since they supposedly replaced the old boardwalk that's stood the test of time for decades. I had high hopes as they were supposed to be using a new composite type of material that would last just as long or longer. I have to say I was disappointed in the level of workmanship! First, they, using who knows what kind of criteria, picked and choose where the replace the old boardwalk and instead of making it two planks wide decided to make it single. It appeared that there was extra pieces that they decided to just leave beside the trail (and could've been used in other areas that were falling apart!). Moreover, in some places that they replaced it was already starting to sag and fall apart in less than 3 years. I am ashamed and disappointed in the level of workmanship of the folks that represent my island home!

But, as far as the trail experience...5++ Stars! It was fantastic! We were fortunate enough to go an a really clear day and it was neither too hot or cold. This is a pretty strenuous hike that's about 4 miles each way and we were pretty out of shape so we decided to go a few miles and just turn around as every other time we went the view at the end was covered in clouds. Two or so miles into it a few hikers coming back said the view was not to be missed and not a cloud to be seen, so we decided to press on... It did not disappoint! We saw the north shore all the way to the east side of the island and all the way up the Wainiha Valley.

If you ever do the hike I recommend doing a little research on the history of the trail. For example along the route you will see old telephone poles still standing. The Army Signal Corp installed these poles during WWII in the swamp in the hopes of creating an alternate line of communication in the event the Japanese attacked.‬

‪We started at Wai Ale Ale from the Pihea Trail to this trail. As it's one of the wettest spots on earth we had first some sun but soon the rain was coming and during the hike it was getting more heavy so close to the end of the trail we needed to turn back as the flash flood was getting more and more dangerous. But it was fun, tough and we will do this and some other trails again for sure!
Bring enough food, water, a towel and some changing clothes as you will get dirty and wet on this hikes.‬

‪This remarkable biome, the so-called “highest swamp on Earth”, boasts of an ethereally intense fog, with plants stunted by nearly drowning in the heavy inundation that characterizes this part of Kauai. To get here requires a trudge up the Pihea trail, which has a fairly steep and treacherous section involving tangled tree roots clamoring to twist your ankle.

The swamp trail itself is a unique experience, which can be topped off with a view into a hanging valley, if clear, which it wasn’t when we hiked it. I am told the view is spectacular. It’s worth doing twice.‬

‪Great hike. Moderate. Muddy, rocky, can be slippery. Not much elevation change. Hike goes slow due to muddy, slippery conditions, but this is not a negative. Views are breathtaking. Get there by 9 otherwise clouds cloud the views by 1030-11:00.‬

‪I have hiked the Pihea/Alakai Swamp Trail a few times before and always loved it.
Unfortunately now, this trail is too dilapidated and in need of serious repairs. And unfortunately, they are in-process of replacing the 3 foot wide planking with a single 12 inch plank and have scattered the old planks all over the place. The downside of this new single plank path is that you really have to keep your eyes so focused on walking this 4 mile gang plank (so you don't fall off), that you miss the wonderful surroundings.‬

‪We tried to do this hike in January...got about a mile in before we had to turn back. Even though it hadn't rained significantly in the past few weeks, the trail was damp and super slippery. Although I had good hiking shoes on, it was just too dangerous; very steep, slippery slopes. If you plan to do this trail at minimum you should have hiking poles, but would be better with cramp-ons. We ended up doing a different trail with much more success.‬

‪First, unless you are very lucky you will see nothing but clouds at the end. No sweeping panorama of the bay for all your efforts. The actual Alakai swamp is less than a mile long and near the end of the trail. The swamp is pretty cool but the effort to get there is high. We are young and in decent shape and the 8-mile round trip took an exhausting 6 hours. The reason for this is that like all public things on Kauai the trail is in gross disrepair. The boardwalk sections only make up half the trail and they are often damaged or unstable. In-between, you have very slippery mud and extended sections of mud-smothered boulders you have to traverse on the way up and down. If wet, some of the boulder sections may not be passable without additional gear due to extreme slipperiness of the mud and you may get trapped on the trail if it rains during your hike. A slip and a fall forward or back would be painful and can cost you an ankle. A fall to the side can be fatal - extended sections run on a very steep hill. You also have to cross a stream with no bridge and of depth and intensity of flow dependent on the most recent rainfall. There are multiple sections with hundreds of feet of continuous climbing or descending. We took the trail because it was misrepresented in the "Ultimate Kauai Guidebook" and have since concluded that the authors are either lying about having traveled the trails they recommend or they are hiding the truth. This is a moderate-strenuous trail under the best conditions.‬

‪My 10-year-old daughter and I did this hike. Second time for both of us, last time was four years ago. The first time we were here the weather was clear and very minimal mud. The hike took about five hours out and back with a few short stops along the way back then. This time it took seven hours, very slow going, very muddy. We both are experienced hikers and had the appropriate boots on. I would not recommend doing this with anything less than proper hiking boots. I also found a great stick on the way to use for extra support which was really helpful. I don’t think I could’ve done the hike without the stick in the muddy conditions. My 10-year-old daughter bounded ahead like the mountain goat she is and had no trouble at all. The first part of the trail, if you choose to go that way, the Pihea trail, was almost vertical in some spots and you have to use tree roots and branches as hand holds. I definitely call this a mderate to hard trail and not a straight up moderate hike! This time around it was quite foggy and socked in when we started the hike at 7:45 AM but by the time we got back around 3 PM it had cleared up giving us spectacular views of the Napali coast line that you really can’t get any other way.
Highly recommend this hike if you are relatively fit, have the proper attire and are willing to take most of the day to do it if needed! The reward is a sense of accomplishment and the most amazing views!‬

‪This was my favorite activity all week. The LONG hike through the swamp was a unique experience and I loved the solitude on the trail -- ran into very few people. A couple times we saw views of the NaPali coastline along the way which was breathtaking and unexpected! I did get pretty banged up with blisters and cuts. (IMMEDIATELY disinfected and covered everything up in waterproof bandages.) It was VERY muddy and I lost my footing several times but note that I went in May right after the bad flooding event. I wouldn't recommend this hike for those with little kids or people who aren't in great health. I thought it was pretty rough esp. after the rain. Nonetheless, I'm glad we did it. We took our time to take photos so didn't get to complete the entire hike but had a great time nonetheless. We hardly saw other people on the trail. Some moments had quite a few at the beginning, but the further in went, we were alone for long stretches of time. For me and my partner, that was bliss. Afterwards, driving through the lookout points in the canyon on the way out was awesome.‬
