The guide walked us through the processes used to prepare the leather and use the leather-based items. Additionally, there's a store, so this is a great chance to purchase goods made of leather.

We had a view from the rooftop from "Chouara Tabakhanesi" with a young man from the leather shop who explained the process taking place and answered our questions. He himself had worked the tannery but had had caustic burns which he showed us.
The place was an incredible assault on the senses and seeing the hard work that these men do was seriously impressive.
We purchased a nice leather bag from the shop and also some rugs from their friends Berber rug shop across the road "Tissage Berbere"

Do not get any custom work done here. I’m not even sure the inventory that they are selling are made by them. Asked for some custom work and they asked for payment in advance. When I picked it up it was inferior quality than the ones in the store. I argued but was told it was better even though it looked like crap. Since it wasn’t much money I cut my losses and just left. Never going back there again.

We went straight to the famous (infamous) no 10 shop, the guy at the entrance refused that we enter because we looked Moroccan, someone explained that they only accept tourists (in order to scam them of course!). We managed to get in after insisting, employees were either rude or uninterested, I asked about the prices and I can assure you they waayyy pricier than anywhere else in the medina. This is a beautiful historical place and everyone has the right to see it FOR FREE, go in the morning to see the tanners at work. There are many other houses/shops overlooking so you can just walk further in the same alley of number 10 and get in. Pretend to show interest at the goods first, click your pictures of the tannery then firmly refuse any insisting salesman's advances. Refuse any help, explanation... etc

The Chouara Tannery in Fez is an absolute must-see! This historic tannery is one of the oldest in the world, and watching the workers meticulously dye and treat the leather is a fascinating experience. The sight of the vibrant, multicoloured dye pits is unforgettable. Seeing the workers in action, using traditional methods passed down through generations, adds a unique and authentic touch to the visit.
One thing to note is that the smell of the dyes can be quite potent. If you’re on a tour, you’ll most likely be given a handful of fresh mint to smell while you're there, which makes a significant difference. If you’re exploring on your own, it’s highly recommended to buy some mint from the market beforehand.

Such a bad place, shop owners try to take advantage of you to visit this place, the only way of seeing this is with people's terraces.
random people will give you wrong directions just to confuse you and ask for money, a guy followed us for 25 minutes after we didn't want to give him money, felt really unsafe and stressed for the whole time.
Everyone tried to scamm us and ruined the whole experience

The craftsmanship of Fes develops through leather works that use the product of their tanneries, its ceramics and copper plates.
The tanneries, in particular, assume a capital importance and are the oldest factories that, according to a certain legend, even date back to the time when the city was most founded; and still used today the same procedures handed down for centuries.
The vats containing the tanning or painting balls are dug directly into the ground; we have seen them from the top of a neighbouring building and equipped with a sprig of mint, so we have not had a very unpleasant feeling; instead we have been told that at other times the stench is unbearable.
Still worth watching for a few minutes

The Chouara Tannery was one of the most interesting things I've seen in many years! The tanning process is carried out using the same methods as practiced for centuries. The hides are soaked in different circular or square vats containing various materials/solvents (including cow urin and pigeon poop) for removing hair, softening, and dying the skins. Workers stand in vats waist deep or more to mix, sort, pound, and extract the hides. We viewed the process from one of the balconies above owned by one of the leather shops. We didn't buy any of the leather craft as the prices didn't seem particularly attractive, but they seem to get enough "victims" that we didn't feel too much pressure to buy, just enjoyed viewing the process of tanning. Many people complain about the smell, but I didn't find it any worse than many farms I've been on. They also provide visitors with a sprig of mint to mellow the smell.

Pelo que eu saiba abre todos os dias. Confirma no hotel que vc está hospedada. É imperdível. Mas o cheio é bem ruim. Para que gosta de casaco de couro é como encontrar uma caixa de lápis de cor.
