I didn't expect this, the photos don't do justice to the beauty of the place.
Apart from the fact that the architecture is of a beauty, I liked the calm atmosphere of places full of history. Rooms left in their juices where you can easily imagine the people who lived there. Easy to find and welcoming staff. The children were more captivated by the small turtle that lives there.

American museum in a historic house which was the old embassy in the middle of Tangier, nice especially the pastel colored interiors

We visited this lovely museum last week hoping to see the Paul bowls room however it was closed for renovation so we didn't get to see it. But the museum itself is extremely interesting and well worth a visit. They have different sections and many different rooms covering many different subjects. There's two rooms that cover the war with lots of interesting information. We will definitely go back again to see the Paul bowls room and stay longer because there's so much to read about. I'd 100% recommend a visit to this very unique museum.

Having learned here was some history between the U.S. & Morocco (and which are really some "interesting bits" I would say) starting from around the 1st-level courtyard upon arrival (with like a "timeline display" of the history of friendship that has existed between the two countries since the founding of the United States) to the way along the staircase while heading up (with a big rug "commemorating the 200-year anniversary from 1821 to 2021 for the existence of this building" right at the bottom of the staircase followed by two "notable texts" on the walls one of which a "recognition message" from the ruler of Morocco at the time & the other a "message of gratitude" from George Washington and where near those text displays are also portraits of the Moroccan ruler & President Washington along with also a number of "visiting photos" of some other American presidents in later times) to the area to the left once getting above the staircase (with some displays of "Morocco during WW2" especially those of the U.S. troops stationed in Tangier at about the time of Operation Torch and where not a display item brought to this building but an "original room" just as existed back then is a small room used by the OSS for intelligence gathering during the war, and yes also kind of feeling like "going back in time" while looking at the displays was also hearing some music of the time playing on the radio).
And, apart from the displays of history in the rooms located to the left (as mentioned above) are a number of "nicely decorated" rooms to the right above the staircase (by having to backtrack to the top of the staircase from the left-side rooms before continuing on to the right side) which is the side of the upper floor with not too many but really a "more-than-a-few" number of beautiful furniture & paintings (in the rooms such as the Ambassador's office, the dining room & the meeting/board room) with the way out after those rooms leading to the "sun terrace" in like an L-shape and where on the other side of that terrace is also like another part of the building (with some "historic photos" of Tangier & about two nice-sized "miniature models" of the scenes of some important battles of Morocco from centuries ago on display in that area which yes is "a little apart" from the main rooms of the building).
With my place of stay at just about a 5-minute walk from this place, I started the day here followed by some "shortcut way" out of the Medina through a short stairway & a few ramp-like streets to near the waterfront where I got on a taxi for a 5-to-10-minute ride to the "north side" of the Medina in the vicinity of the Musee de la Kasbah (with like a "wide panorama" of the sea from one side of the square in front of the museum but the museum itself "just about average" with just some small art-exhibit areas, a traditional-styled courtyard of a modest size & a fairly small wall-enclosed garden); and by heading back through the Medina from that museum to my place (this time on foot and not by taxi), what I found was "quite a sprawling area" to walk through (from north to south) with also really quite a number of souvenir shops in this Medina which in my opinion is the "best of three" Medinas visited while in the country.

The +: nice location between the fish market and the port.
Pleasant visit in a setting that bears witness to a certain era.
Beautiful demonstration of American-Moroccan friendship.
The -: Price 2.5 times more expensive for foreigners. This discrimination does not exist in France where museums are the same price for everyone.
The displays are in English or Arabic, no French language.
France is represented by a photo of Petain, a photo of Hitler in front of the Eiffel Tower and De Gaulle as invited by Churchill and Truman and not as an ally. Damage.

Very close to the medina, a superbly maintained/restored building where we discover the atmosphere of the Western presence in Morocco at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
We're having a good time.

A really fascinating and well designed museum capturing and sharing a very powerful and fascinating history of a ~250 year old friendship between Morocco and the US. The museum is well curated and filled with great descriptions and history and I found it really fascinating. I definitely recommend going.

Hi - my wife and our friends would like to take the 1 day excursion from Malaga, Spain to Tanger, Morocco on 11/4/15. We are thinking of using the Viator tour. It's seems really great. Any reviews of this tour available?

Hi, thanks for your question. We do not work directly with individual Spanish tour companies (they usually have Moroccan partners), so we cannot comment on the specific firm that you mention. In general, we recommend that travelers joining any group specifically express their interest in visiting the Legation to their preferred tour operators to see if we are included in their tours. Safe travels, John

Is this worth taking the ferry from Gibraltar to see? I'm not an American and don't have any interest in their history

It is probably not worth it for you to make the trip but it is certainly worthwhile to visit Tangiers!
