They don't do the walking with lions anymore, but the time we had there was amazing. You are very well looked after and the groups are small, so it feels more special. The enclosure was amazing, but the lion feeding was incredible. You are just a few feet from them. Incredible. We also saw and learnt about hyenas. Totally recommend

Visited here to see the lions up close - a great experience for the feeding. The tour guide directly disturbed resting lions when he intentionally drove the vehicle up to the lions to get them yo jump and wake up. That's a poor move in all regards and why this place did not get five stars.

The feeding of the big cats was amazing and I doubt you will ever be able to see it anywhere else. AMAZING. What wasn't amazing was our guide. He was trying to get up close to the lions with the vehicle to get them to move for a photo op. NOT cool. We kept telling him it was good enough but not for him. The lions didn't want to get up, but he pushed. The other thing was the guide bullied my husband at the end of tour for better tip. We gave $20 for a 2 hour tour and he wanted more. NOT cool. Then at then end they gave us a survey to fill out and stood there while you were trying to fill it out. NOT cool again, uncomfortable.
So in my husband's eyes the NOT cool outweighed the COOL. But the COOL was the feeding.

Absolutely loved this. They no longer offer the walk, but riding into the lion pride enclosure was nice to see them up close and personal. However, the feeding of the male lions was superb. To see the power of these majestic animals was just amazing. I could watch and listen to them all day. They may not offer the walk any longer, but this is a fantastic replacement.

We visited the African Lion & Environmental Research Trust in October 2018. It is located close to Victoria Falls town.
The driver picked us at our hotel to the research trust, where we could walk with lion cubs. Because lions are endangered in Zimbabwe, after 24 months-old, the lions are released safely in a reserve where there are few lions, where they are checked all the time by rangers, to be sure that they are able to hunt and to live safely in the wildlife. CONGRATULATIONS!!!
At the arrival, we saw a video explaining us the aims of the trust, and the reasons why they have planned to release lions in the wildlife. It was very interesting!!! You can ask all the questions to the rangers after the video. After, we were allowed to walk with rangers with two 13-months old lions (brother and sister) and to have a contact activity; we were a small group of 9 persons. It was a unique and unforgettable experience!!!
Altogether, I highly recommend to visit the trust to support lions survival in the wildlife in Zimbabwe! I'll come back as a volunteer!

It was a truly remarkable experience, they're making good conservation efforts and at the same time educating people on the importance of lion and human peaceful cohabitation. The lions appeared to be healthy looking (well fed, good fur, growing quite well as compared to the ones I always see on nat geo wild) and not stressed. The guides knew what they were talking about and I applaud they way they always handled the lions in such a non violent non aggressive way. Overall I truly enjoyed my time with the guides and the lions.

The opportunities to spend quality time with big cats is rapidly disappearing. The various movements in favor of prohibiting physical encounters with wildlife are ascendant and Zimbabwe's lion education centers are not immune to the pressure (even before the Cecil controversy). At the Lion Encounter you will experience a walk with two of four young cats (less than 2 years old) who remain in the encounter program while awaiting release into a conversation reserve elsewhere. The cats will never be "wild" but they are not "tame" either. At best they are socialized. That is why the walk is accompanied by no fewer than 4 handlers to manage the two cats and the guests while another gives the presentation and yet another makes a video for the group to purchase later. It is an important source of funds to have foreign visitors present, and all that they do to protect the cats from human contact is done (hand sanitizer, physical distance, perfumes and odor bans). The draw of the big cats is really irresistible for most people, myself included, and always there is one person who is scared to death. The small group size helps (10 or fewer), and the short walking distance also helps with creating a casual (appearing) interaction with these charming animals.

Hi, may I know what happens to the lions when they will be 18 months old, or later? I heard that you will teach them to hunt and then you will bring them to savana and let them free, but someone told me also another story, that in reality these lions will be brought to private reserve where they will be hunted and killed. What's the true? Thank you

Good day. Thanks very much for your valued enquiry. Our lions go through a 3 phase program.
Stage 1- Introductory phase
Here young lions between the ages of 6-36months are taken out on daily excursions into the bush. Accompanied by paying guests, these lions spend a good portion of the first 2 years of their life learning and practicing being lions.
Not only are these excursions vital for preparing the lions for a more natural life, but it has, over the years, become the primary source of funding for all of the various conservation and community development initiatives we have started around the lion program.
As we raise these cubs from a young age, we essentially become their pride. They are completely comfortable in our presence and behave naturally when out in the bush. Honing and practicing skills that are instinctive to them.
This period of time prepares them for the next stage of our program which is a semi wild release.
Stage 2- Semi Wild Release
We use the term semi wild because the area that the lions are released into is completely fenced off. This is to stop the lions from being able to get to people, and stop the people from being able to get to the lions. Obviously the bigger the area the better, but is also the most costly part of our program.
To make an area secure for lion is no small task, and requires significant funding. Once secure, the area then needs to be established to provide a home to not only the lions, but also the other animals that will make up the natural ecosystem of the area, this includes water holes, road networks and so on.
Essentially we create a secure suitable environment with available prey and water for us to be able to release a pride of lions that has been through stage 1.
These lions are then left to live as natural a life as possible. All human contact is withdrawn, and the only encounters with people are in a vehicle, much like any national park.
Once settled these lions then reproduce and have cubs of their own. However, these cubs are left with the adults to be raised by the pride in the secure natural ecosystem. Most importantly, the cubs are never fed by a person and are never handled by a person, and therefore show the natural fear of humans that is present in any wild born lion.
Once mature, it is these cubs born in the semi wild areas that are unhabituated that we intend to release into the true wilds of Africa.
Stage 3- Wild Release
Once the cubs born in the semi wild areas reach adulthood, an area is identified that may be suitable for their eventual wild release.
Here we have several options available to us. Due to the our lions coming from a captive origin, they are completely genetically diverse and bring much needed diversity to the existing populations.
Our lions are also completely disease free, ensuring that only the strongest and healthiest lions are released.
With the success we had been having with regards to our commercial lion walks and related volunteering opportunities, inevitably such activities started to crop up at other establishments. Sadly not all of these had the same vision and purpose in mind.
Most of all the very unethical practice of canned lion hunting. Canned hunting is the breeding of lions purely for the purpose of being shot by a paying hunter. It is a practice that has been going on for many years. As the hunter only wants a mature trophy, the owner had little use for young lions and would often give them to family or friends to raise up as a novelty item, and therefore not have the expense of raising it. Once the lion is old enough he is returned to the owner, who then sells him to a hunter to be shot.
Lion walking and cub petting now gave such owners an opportunity to earn money off the lion while it is young, and still ultimately sell it to a hunter for the final reward.
As not many people in the world will support such a life cycle for a lion, these owners advertised their lion interactions under the banner of conservation and releasing lions into the wild. On several occasions we pursued legal action against such organizations who had gone as far as copying and pasting our conservation work and claiming to be part of the same efforts.
Obviously several such operators have been exposed, and at the same time, canned hunting bought into the spotlight, and with it lion interaction activities. To the point now that anyone who has captive lions is painted with the same brush and must be involved in this very unethical practice.

I think it's much better if you skip this "experience". It's simply lions in captivity. Not conservation. Please please please read more about this place, you'll realise its a money making machine doing nothing for the conservation of lions.

When is the best time in the year to visit the Lion Encounter? I am looking for the best season when there is less tourists but still dry weather. Thank you for a good hint.

Thank you for your question. This time of the year is rather wet with the rains, from June onwards is peak season, so my suggestion would be May. Please bear in mind that we do sometimes have late rains so I cannot guarantee it will be dry.
How many lions have you successfully released into the wild to date?

We were told that when the lions reach 24 months they would be released in a semi wild state where they would learn to hunt for themselves while still being observed. The 2 Lions we were with (Laila and Laika), both of whom were 22 months, were to be released in 2 months which would be around November in a semi wild state so that they could learn to hunt and fend for themselves.
