Wir haben uns für das Rafting in den Victoria Fällen entschieden.
Wir sollten nichts mitbringen, auch keine Wechselsachen. Das Abenteuer wurde für “Jedermann” tauglich beschrieben… selbst für Nichtschwimmer sei die Tour über 19 Stromschnellen geeignet…. Also los!!
Ich bin froh, dass ich nicht unter Höhenangst leide und körperlich fit bin, ansonsten wäre der Abstieg in die Schlucht ( 220 Hm auf nahezu direktem Wege) bereits das erste Hindernis gewesen. So konnte ich diese kleine Wanderung aber wirklich genießen, die Landschaft ist atemberaubend schön !!
Im Vorwege gab es ein Sicherheitsbreefing, nachdem alle mit Helm, Weste und Paddel ausgestattet waren. Hier wurden alle möglichen Szenarien einmal theoretisch Durchgesprochen.
Neopren Kleidung stand nicht zur Verfügung. Aufgrund der hohen Temperaturen schien dies auch nicht notwendig.
Unten angekommen wurden nun die Fahrmanöver inkl. Personen aus dem Wasser bergen in ruhigem Gewässer praktisch geübt. Dabei Blick auf die Victoria Fälle. Das machte erst einmal einen guten Eindruck.
Dann ging es über die ersten Stromschnellen bis Level 5. Einen Flip überstanden wir dank Einweisung recht glimpflich, jeder wusste was zu tun ist. Das Gefühl innerhalb der Stromschnelle unter dem Boot zu sein ist aber sicher nicht für JEDEN etwas.
Stromschnelle 9 ist dann zu Fuß zu umrunden, da diese eine Grad 6 Schnelle ist. Bis dahin super Stimmung im Boot.
Auch wenn sich das Ganze als deutlich anstrengender als erwartet gestaltet. Wir sind froh alle recht fit zu sein.
Dann zieht ein Gewitter auf und nähert sich schnell. Kurze Zeit später finden wir uns mitten im Zentrum des Unwetters wieder… Blitz und Donner erfolgen zeitgleich, es herrschen starke Böen und Starkregen. Sicherlich keine seltene Wetterbedingung zu dieser Jahreszeit, für uns in dieser Heftigkeit aber unerwartet.
Das unfassbare ist jedoch, dass dieser Umstand vom Team komplett ignoriert wird. Wir bleiben auf dem Wasser und machen weiter als wäre nicht. Aufrufe unsererseits mit dem Verlangen das Raft an das Ufer zu bringen und außerhalb des Wassers das Unwetter abzuwarten wurden ignoriert.
Neben dem Gefühl uns in ernster Gefahr zu befinden sanken die Temperaturen erheblich, so dass wir nun auch frieren. Es ist aber noch die Hälfte des Weges zu machen. Das schmälert den Spaß erheblich!!
Der steile Aufstieg wieder heraus aus der Schlucht, also das Äquivalent zum Abstieg, war aufgrund der gesunkenen Temperaturen und vorhandener Fitness recht gut zu schaffen. Das ging jedoch nicht jedem so!! Mit der Ausrüstung an, kann der Aufstieg bei hohen Temperaturen sicher zur Tortur werden.
Der Lunch war sehr gut und ermöglichte eine Erholung und Stärkung. Ohne trockene Kleidung oder zumindest einem Handtuch war es jedoch etwas unkomfortabel.
Fazit: Raftig super, Sicherheit fragwürdig

The panorama is phenomenal and the walk is worth it but not at the expense of security. During our rafting descent, we were caught in a storm. Lights fell very close to us. The guides have not undertaken any procedure to put us in safety. They even ignore our demands to temporarily get out of the water. Fortunately, we all arrived safely but this company clearly didn’t set everything up for our safety. It is clear that rafting carries risks however with good management, they can be minimized. It seems that this company does not control the security bases related to weather…

I am a non-swimmer (meaning I drank liters of that Zambezi water😂), but I was in very good hands. The guides were all very friendly yet professional and supportive. The only downside to it is the sharp descent and ascent to the top of the gorge. Hated that. Also, the lunch could be served hot. Special mention to guides JB, Steve and Kufisto. These are the names I remember but everyone was kind. Will definitely be back again and again.

I have done rafting various places before but the Zambezi is a different ball game! The rapids are intense and require a lot of physical strength.
Every boat flipped at least once going down the rapids, some even twice or three times. There are safety kayaks in the water ready to pull you out and I'm so glad there were as I fully believe I would have drowned overwise. The currents are strong and when you fall in you need to curl up in a ball to avoid getting dragged down by them, easier said than done when panicking.
We flipped quite earlier on and got a bit of a scare, I fully believe we flipped because we weren't paddling hard enough and following the guides instructions. The rest of the rapids we put more effort into and did not flip again!
The climb in and out are not to be underestimated. The climb out was a particular struggle as it was in the mid day heat and we were exhausted from the rafting. That being said, JB our guide was absolutely fantastic and assisted me up the gorge the whole way, letting me stop when needing to and getting me water/sugar to keep me going.
The lunch at the top was amazing and a great day was had by all!
There is always a risk with white water rafting and it is not to be taken lightly. If you follow the guides instructions and push hard you will have a pleasant and enjoyable day!

I must say this was amazing value, exciting and well planned. Lunch was good and the safety and set up felt good. The rapids did not disappoint. The guide was helpful and everyone got along in all boats and were there to have a good time. My only issue is my personal level of comfort. Having never done level 5 rapids this was a tad scary being in the front of the raft.
Not a single raft that day did NOT flip over. So everyone fell in the water that day and being underwater in the level 5 rapids can be scary. Injuries abound as all my knuckles were cut up and bleeding (with a nice scar now) and my toe was also bleeding. Safety climbing up the gorge felt dangerous as you were exhausted and carrying gear.
Overall I fully recommend it if you love the thrill and in decent condition to climb. I am clearly out of shape haha.

Besides the adventurous tour on the river, it was quite a challenge to get down and up to and from the river. And the bus ride was something else :-P
All in all the staff is well trained and friendly. I would definitely recommend it in particular for athletic people…

Swan song trip for a 70-year man. Two of us went for a half-day white water adventure, starting at rapid #10 through #24. JB was our guide and was very friendly and proficient The rapids didn't disappoint us. Water was very cold. Only difficulty was climbing out the gorge using their "African stairway" but JB stuck with me and encouraged me to the top. The climb up the gorge is not to be under-estimated. Nevertheless, the rapid busting is awesome

June 25th, 2020. JB, Bright and Cophisto and team did us right! The descent to the gorge base for entry comprised a small trek through thickish forest to be greeted by a special starting view of the river between gorge walls. After that the ride through stunning sequences of gorge and agitated water with blue skies was all around spectacular! All dunked at The Terminator on a full flip makes it all the more memorable. A must is the video buy - very well done - which includes still pics too. One Class V and three Class IVs later I would do it again!

Simply wow! We were initially hesitant coming into this intense activity for the first time given the river's reputation; however Shearwater team kept us safe the entire time. Our guide gave clear instructions throughout the ride so we felt very comfortable and all of us were safe even after we flipped. One person got motion sickness so maybe a good idea to take meclizine prior to the trip if you are not good on boat. Lunch at the end of the tour was yummy. This is a must do when visit Vic Fall!

Well what an amazing experience with the most amazing staff.
First off I am a 61 year old woman and reasonably fit, we were greeted by very friendly staff who ran through all the safety proceedures and were all chirpy and in good form.
I must admit the hike down and hike up is quite tough but the guide held my hand all the way and we stopped whenever I wanted.
All safety instructions were good and we were all taught how to paddle.. The rapids were amazing and brilliant fun not once were we worried, they had a safety canoe and a photogher either side of us should we needed them! We jumped out of the boat a few times and were allowed to swim which was brilliant.
We were given water constantly and they had a full first aid kit should we need.
We went through 13 rapids and took about 2 1/2 hours of sheer fun.
After the climb back up we were treated to a cold beer and the most delicious lunch,even catering for our friend who is vegan.
On the bus home Moses and I chatted about his amazing life and there struggles they overcome with such enthusiasm it really was heart warming and made you realise how lucky we are in the uk! Walking 10k to work, no running water, making there houses out of mud and lining the floors with cows dung!
All in all I can’t rate them high enough, my thanks go out to Lee, our brilliant guide, Andrew, Steven(safety boat) Moses and our fab photographer and all the others I couldn’t remember all the names.

What level of fitness is required for this? Will it be ok for a couple of reasonably fit 60 year olds?

Hey,
Fitness is a thing. The walk down leaves knees and quads quaking - there's a steep staircase for most of the way - but the walk back up is really hard. You'd have been paddling, knocked around, and sitting in the sun for a few hours so you're already pretty exhausted when you start it.

No not at all. They are very rarely in the Rapids. At some point when there were light Rapids we got out the raft and just held on the side.

Hi there- this looks awesome. Is it a family friendly event? How young would you say is safe to go? Do all trips have to include the level 5? Are the lower key routes?

Hi,
There's only one route, as the river is wedged between two cliff faces, and I wouldn't recommend it for kids or young teenagers. It can get pretty hairy in places and there isn't a place to get out. It is amazing if you do it and understand more of what it's like. There's a video called Zambezi Rafting by Logan Carter on Youtube - it won't let me post the link - which is pretty accurate.

Is it recommended to bring a waterproof bag to store your shoes in the raft to keep them dry?

No need, you'll leave all your valuables with the staff and any extra stuff in the boat would 100% get lost when you're thrown about. During the rafting you'll just swim with your shoes on.
