Osu Castle ist ein relevanter Teil der Ghanaischen Geschichte und für mich ein absolutes „Must See“
Wir haben an einer Tour mit dem Guide vor Ort teilgenommen für 40 Cedis. Die Tour dauerte etwas weniger als eine Stunde.
Große Teile der Festung sind nicht besonders gut Instand gehalten. Ohne den Guide wirkt es wenig spannend, aber mit den nötigen Infos versteht man die Anlage trotz des mäßigen Zustands. Es ist sehr beeindruckend, wie er über die Sklaven Vergangenheit referiert hat.
Neben dem Castle gibt es noch einen Garten bzw. kleine Parkanlage. Dort kann man nach der Führung noch einen Spaziergang machen.
Tipp: Direkt mit dem Uber/Bolt hinfahren. Wir sind vom Black Star Arch hingelaufen. Der Weg ist nicht weit, aber es lungern entlang der Straße überall Gruppen herum und man wird schnell etwas bedrängt.

Really enjoyed visiting this castle. The tour guide was really interesting and the history of the castle is grim but fascinating.

I’m so glad I visited Osu Castle. The guide was brilliant and gave such an impactful, informative tour of the castle spanning so much history. You can see the awful history of the trade of enslaved people as well as recent history such as where modern presidents of Ghana lived and worked. The guide was very knowledgeable and gave poignant descriptions of all the places we saw.
If you go just make sure to walk past the government building still in use to get to the castle. Everyone was helpful in pointing me in the right direction but it was confusing and a little intimidating to walk up to a big closed gate with guards.
I’m giving 4 stars because it was kind of hard to leave if you don’t have a car with no taxi rank or Uber drivers wanting to come that far. Took me about 45 minutes and walking further up to main roads before I could get an Uber back to the city centre.

Got here good and early, no one else around just us, so had the whole place to ourselves, the tour guide from the Castle brought us around the grounds and showed us the many rooms of the Castle, and also brought us down below where they used to keep slaves.
He told us a lot about the history of the castle, of slavery, and the subsequent uses of the castle.....was very interesting and the guide was kind enough to go above and beyond in showing us things that perhaps on another day might be off to the public.
Very informative.
Spent over an hour here, and the castle is definitely worth visiting, if only to get an idea of the horrors of the slave trade.....

Also known as Christianborg Castle, Osu castle was a fascinating place to visit. We learned so much about this place and its history from our tour guide. We learned tat the Danes originally built it, but then it was occupied by many other entities after that. The Portuguese, Dutch, British, and local rulers have occupied it over the years, all of which were active in the slave trade. The dungeon where the slaves were held captive was absolutely horrifying. I couldn’t get out of there fast enough. The beautiful garden we strolled through after the dungeon was calming though...

A castle with a mixed history of both African slave trade by the Europeans, as well as Ghanaians' leadership/government's seat of power.
A castle of dungeons for black slaves, a gate of 'no return' for slaves, a chapel for white slavers to worship, diplomatic rooms, and presidential offices all rolled into one.
A nice place to visit for black history.

An interesting trip lead by a friendly and knowledgeable guide.
You have to walk through government run area and sign in and out. Just be careful not to take any pictures in that section.
I preferred my trip to ussher fort but this was still interesting and sad.
It cost 40 cedi and the tour lasts approximately an hour.
There's a nice park next door built by the British once they'd run out the locals :( nice park to relax in and good for bird spotting.

Really good tour. Lots of history about the horrors of the Slave Trade and the history of the Castle up to present day.

Osu Castle - or Fort Christiansborg - is a must-see when in Accra. There seems to be some confusion on whether it is open to the public or not. It is, so go there when you can. It is a bit confusing when you arrive because the part before you come to the old castle is government territory and you are not allowed to take photos there. You register and pay 40 GHS per person and then you get a guide for app. 45 minutes. The castle was central to the slave trade for Denmark during 200 years. It was built in 1661 and was eventuelly sold to the British mid-1800. Like Elimna Castle at Cape Coast it is central to visit in order to get an understanding of the terrible conditions for the slaves kept here before the transport across the Atlantic to the sugar plantations at the Virgin Islands.

It's well worth a visit, so much history to this place. If you don't have time to travel as far as Cape Coast and Elmina, it is very much worth a visit to go and pay your respects to the past. There is still much to do in its restoration and different parts of it are open at different times, but still worth it

I guess that it might be closed now due to COVID-19 restrictions. It was open daily in January 2020.

How long should one allocate to visit the castle?

I would give your 3 hours. The castle is not big but wanting to take it all in you will want to give yourself time. Also, ton the day we went there only two tours guides so we had to wait about 30 minutes.
On what days is the castle open to visitors?

It is open every day of the week. I’m not sure of opening and closing times. We went on a Sunday.

Hi Tracey,
I was to the Osu Castle in november 2017 alone and with out booking any guide, in a whim sort of. I took a tro tro heading from Labadi beach to Jamestown and asked the driver to let me of where the road to the castle started, and so he did and I walked the rest of the way up to the castle gates. No problem there.
The entrace is not through the main gate, but through a glass cube at the side and you go through a metal detector and will be met by guards. The detector and the guards are there because the Ghanaian politics have build their office just in front the old castle and you have to pass it to get to the old parts. I was met in a much friendly way by the guards and they tried to reach the female guide for me - as it went, the castle intendent came and took me on a private tour through the castle for one hour. I leaved a revue of the tour if you search for Osu Castle. The guards and the intendent where all very polite and helpful. Just remember that part of the castle are not alowed to take photos, so ask your guide. Hope this was helpful!
