Been here for meditation and had wonderful time at Kapan monastery. Easy access to the city and it’s on the top can see beauty of Kathmandu city from quiet place.

Second time here for buddhist teachings and meditation. Amazing. Mindbending. And a wonderful place to stay at for some blissful days. Dont miss the dharma shop above the informationdesk.

I was here in January 2023 for a 10 day course 'Introduction to Buddhism'. It completely exceeded my expectations!
Some of the previous reviews say the monastery is closed to day visitors, but while I was here I saw people coming for short visits in the day. The gate closes at 5pm though and the main image of this listing isnt actually the monastery itself, but a building on nearby hillside, so maybe that's the confusion?
The taxi ride is a bit bumpy though! I also recommend a visit to the nearby Khachoe Ghakyil Ling Nunnery who have a beautiful gompa and small shop selling the incense they make there.
There's a cafe on site with excellent coffee and views. There's also 2 shops; the gift shop and library is a bit hidden upstairs over the reception, but definetly worth a visit for buying buddist texts, prayer flags, yak wool blankets and souvenirs. There's also a general store where you can buy cold drinks, toileteries and things you might need while staying on site.
On the last day I walked from Kopan along the ridge through pine forests to Gokarna mahadev temple, which was a great walk with amazing views back to the monastery.
The accomodation was simple and comfy, great shower (best to shower later in the day when sun has heated the water) and I had a room to myself.
Incredible views over the Kathmandu valley and it's stunning at night time and there always eagles flying overhead (and planes). Great experince to live in a monastery environment amoungst monks and see their traditions and way of life.
Really good value for the 10day course. The teaching was from a french/italian monk, who answered all of our questions with great clarity and led us to a firm understanding of basic Guelpa Tibetan buddhist teachings and meditation practice. We were a large international group of 50-70? it was a good blend of meeting people and spending time in noble silence.
The food was excellent and I felt really well looked after. The gardens are lovely and you can walk around the stupa and monastery grounds.
I even had the opportunity to greet Lama Zopa Rinpoche, which was very special, and I feel very grateful for this whole experince and highly recommend a trip to Kopan for the day or a retreat.

the monastery is beautiful, however, it can only be viewed from outside. Only monks and pupils are allowed to go in. Though it is a shame about the monastery, you can go for a hike to nearby Gokarneshwar and other areas which are nearby.

Hi there! Due to time constraints, I can only participate in an "advanced" meditation course. I have hardly had any meditation experience so far. Do you think I can still attend such a course (without having completed an introductory course beforehand) or does it make no sense? Thanks for tips!
Hallo!
When can I visit the monastery? Do they have daily dharma talks for visitors?
Adam S

The quick answer is no. But possibly also yes.
No, there are only organized dharma talks during organized classes.
The November class for example, or shorter ten day sessions.
You can see their schedule online
Yes, because both Koran and the village of Boudha are pilgrimage towns
And there is a dharma class happening somewhere.
Also, and what I like best is the entire town prays by walking around the stupa.
Ok mani Padma hum. Twice or three times daily

Hi, would like to know how you could go back from Kopan Monastery to the airport? Have you arranged your pickup in advance? Or taxis can be found easily around the Monastery?

You can easily arrange a taxi while at the monastery so you don’t need to do it ahead of time. A few days before you leave Kopan ask at their office how much time they need to book you a taxi.

Hola.
