Located in the crowded Siam square, this 50 years old legendary building is the last survivor of stand alone movie theatre in Bangkok. When I first encountered this vintage theatre, I was stunned by its gorgeous architecture and elegant decoration which is a perfect combination between east and west , a well mixed of classic and modern. An open-air lobby welcomed me with a spectacular 5 tiered Italian chandelier consisted of many glass spheres. As I climbed the staircase to the second floor of the lobby to buy a ticket, I noticed many magnificent arch pillars that support the ceiling. Between these pillars (on the ceiling) embellished lightbulbs centered at golden 24-pointed star ornaments. On the wall above an entrance to the theatre hall, settled some bas-relief sculptures representing many asia nations performing arts. Such a charming place ! I was completely love this theatre at the first sight.
Ticket system at this theatre is also "traditional". Only a pencil and paper (which shows availability of seats) are needed. You choose your seat, staffs crosses it out, then you will get a (very cool) retro paper ticket and all that is (no computer involved).
The best seat costs only 160 baht (while normal seat and medium seat cost 120 and 140 baht) which is still cheaper than the cheapest seat in other theatre !
Staffs were nice and polite. Most of them have been worked here for many decades. Staffs at the entrance wear yellow jackets (trademark uniform ?). I was told that seats were used to be 100% occupied at its prime (about 40 years ago). However, only about 20 seats were occupied in that day (pity for Thais that do not see the value of this theatre). I bought some snacks and a bottle of water before walked into the hall. After a yellow jacket guy torched the way to my seat, I found myself in the vast auditorium comprised of approximately a thousand seats (876 seats, to be precise) with an enormous screen. Advertising times and movie trailers here are short comparing to the other theatres. I sat on a comfortable seat all 2 hrs, overwhelmed with ecstasy. This was an ultimate movie theatre feeling I've ever experienced ! Honestly, the atmosphere of the theatre is more interesting than the movie. This grand theatre is frozen in time. I felt like I was back to the time when my dad was a young lad. Moreover, the theatre occasionally brought back some great classic movies to rerun in special Sundays. In my opinion, this extraordinary theatre deserves more than 5 stars rating.
After the movie, I enjoyed a wonderful meal at Scala restaurant (authentic chinese cuisine, operated along the theatre for more than 30 years) on the first floor of the lobby. The restaurant has the same name as the theatre, all waiters also wear the same yellow suits as theatre's staffs, and its decoration resembles the theatre (western culture styles such as bas-relief sculptures about Aztec gods, arch, Doric order, beautiful statues of ancient European ladies). Foods, especially "Peking duck" and "sliced stewed pig ear", were fantastically delicious.
Thank you Scala (both theatre and restaurant) for sharing a precious moment with me.
Attended "The call of the wild" on 4 March 2020.
PS. Very bad news is Scala theatre (and the restaurant) is permanently closed due to covid crisis. Legend becomes memory. Sooo...oo sad. Farewell Scala

I really love watching movies at Scala Cinema. The building and decorations give out retro atmosphere like you are walking into the past. The place looks nice and clean enough. They also have restroom inside the cinema. There’re plenty of comfortable seats available. The screen is huge, wide, and pretty much satisfying to watch from my personal experience. Even though there are not that many movie selections, the price of the tickets is cheaper than other cinema in Thailand (140 or 160 Baht per one ticket). They also sell the cheapest popcorn I’ve ever seen (40 Baht per one bag). Moreover, Scala Cinema is located in the shopping area of Siam Square. Therefore, it’s very convenient to come here by public transportation. You can take any buses that has a stop at Siam Square or take BTS to Siam station and walk to the cinema. I think there is no retro cinema like this anymore in Thailand. Please visit and support the place to keep the business going as I really don’t want to lose this cool chill-out spot.

Scala Cinema is Thailand’s last remaining operational standalone single-screen cinema located in Bangkok’s Siam Square shopping area. It was built in 1969 & was designed to be the most luxurious theatre in its time adopting an “Art Deco” architecture style. Apart from being Bangkok’s most beautiful movie theatre, everything is preserved since they started operations. In 2012, the cinema received the ASA Architectural Conservation Award but its future remains uncertain as Chulalongkorn University, who owns the land plans to redevelop the property.
Scala Cinema is indeed special. It is popular not for the films that are shown but for the retro style of watching movies that it provides to customers. You will feel that you’ve been transported to another era just by looking at the outside.
The name of the film is displayed in red letters, each put up by hand on the old classical light up box. In Italian, the word “Scala” means stairs. So, we had to ascend the double staircases leading to the art deco hall. Furthermore, there was a 5-story gigantic Italian chandelier hanging from the huge domed high ceiling decorated with large art deco bronzed flowers. The chandelier stops at head height just over the double staircase. The domed ceilings with large art deco flowers continued throughout the hall. There were also pillars from the ceiling descending to the ground creating a cathedral like feel.
Towards the right, there was an old school ticket booth. We had asked for 2 tickets using our fingers as language proved to be a barrier. There were 2 shows on display, Stephen King’s “It” & an animation movie. We were in time to watch one & we showed the elderly lady our movie choice which was “It”. Then, we pointed the seats of our choice on the seating map & the lady wrote down the numbers on the ticket stub before ripping it off from a booklet and giving them to us just like the old-fashion way. We read that the ticket prices were one of the lowest in comparison to the modern cinemas. Thereafter, my friend bought a tub of salted popcorn to complete the cinema experience.
We saw the ticket collectors in their uniform. They beckoned that it was time to go in. We went into the 1000-red velvet upholstery seat cinema. It was easy to find our seats as there weren’t many people around. Unfortunately, the seats weren’t comfortable. They were soft & bad for our backs. There was very little leg room too.
To our surprised, when the movie started, it was not “It” but the animated one. So, we left & went back to the ticket booth. We did our best to explain that there was a misunderstanding. The lady finally understood & gave us back our money. It was both funny & a let-down at the same time. Well, at least we got to see the inside of the cinema.
We will definitely come back the next time to finish the retro movie experience. Scala Cinema is definitely the most beautiful cinema that we have ever visited. It would be a loss & a pity if it was torn down.

Usually good selection of films, plenty of seats available. Cash only. Ultra air-conditioned - consider bringing a long sleeve shirt just in case (yes, even in the summer). Huge screen, comfortable seats and really cool building - check out the ceiling! Hope they keep this place going, although it's in prime real estate territory so who knows what the future holds.

Really beautiful single screen cinema close to Siam centre in the heart of shopper’s Bangkok. The ceiling and wall details, the latter on the first floor up, where one buys tickets are things I will never tire of admiring. The auditorium itself is enormous, seats are comfy, and the sound is nicely balanced. Even the cheapest seats “near” the screen aren’t overly so, making this a fantastically good value place to enjoy recent releases.

This little retro gem is nestled in Siam Square, amidst all the new and modern malls. I'm not sure if the cinema is still in use although the movie titles advertised are quite new - Glass and Schindler's List 25th Anniversary. We discovered a little DVD/Blu-ray shop behind the staircase and my husband who is a movie buff was thrilled! We bought one Blu-ray and one DVD. Prices for both were cheap but bear in mind that these movies are licensed to be produced in Thailand so naturally, they would have the option of Thai language, spoken and subtitles. The quality of the discs were pretty good.

Most people will not appreciate this old school gem. Bangkok is full of new, high tech, expensive theaters, and I don't know how this one survives. Its super easy to get to, very cheap, yet provides a solid picture with good sound. the theater has an open air lobby thats pretty cool. The concession stand is awful....no effort put in at all....a real shame and a lost opportunity for revenue.
Upon entering the theater, you will be escorted to your assigned seat in this massive 1000 seat room. Its smells a bit like mildew and dampness. The seats are pretty old but not too bad. The AC was barely adequate to keep the theater cool.
The screen is nice, large and curved, with a curtain covering it until showtime.....pretty cool and rare.
I did buy popcorn, and it was fresh and good.

Now that Lido is gone, all that remains of Bangkok’s historic cinemas is Scala. Enjoy it while it lasts. A national treasure.

「万引家族」を観た。チケット売り場ではおばさんが紙に手書きで座席をチェック。120バーツ、140バーツ、160バーの3種類。中はとても広い。ロビーが雰囲気がある。

Unfortunately, I can’t confirm if the movies are in English as I did not watch any movies at Scala. Was there to capture the vintage feel of the facade.

Hi, I would love to watch a movie in Scala Cinema in two weeks' time when I'm in Bangkok. What's the best way to find out what movies are playing and the times? Do I just rock up there and find out?

You can obtain current (and sometimes upcoming) movie listing at their website. Just google Scala Cinema and click on apex siam square site (sorry, tripadvisor doesn't allow to put the actual website link in the answer). Enjoy!
