‪Do not be fascinated by the Shop's size and the Staff. This Shop Sells Fake GEMS and Jewelry at the price of Original ones. So beware of the prices, and also they rope in the customers from an near by temple in Tuk-Tuk. So even if you want to buy just offer them 20% of the value (equivalent to Fake Prices). Highly Recommend not to Buy any thing from here.‬

‪The coach tour made its usual stop, where you can buy anything from set gems to leather goods and fabrics, at a price. I purchased an item for my wife at 10% off the marked price, too much so I asked for an extra $50 aud discount. After much mumbling they agreed to my offer. Remember to never pay the advertised price no matter how chic the store may be.‬

‪This write up is regarding the scam that was perpetrated against us while we were at Bangkok.
The culprits who carried out the scam are none other than Baan Thai Gems which is situated in the heart of Bangkok right next to the Palace at Chitlada, Sawankhalok road. They are party to an elaborate scam through which unsuspecting tourists are fooled into buying their products at exorbitantly high prices and the modus operandi employed involves exploiting the gullibility of tourists.
After spending three days at Koh Samui, I and my wife arrived at Bangkok on 6th Dec 2015 to see Bangkok as well as the surrounding tourist attractions. We checked into Hotel Tara Place in the morning and after breakfast we decided to see the local attractions within the city. We were warned by the hotel staff to avoid Tuk Tuks and use the Taxi cabs or rent a vehicle, and following this advice we saw a taxi parked across the road and approached it to take us to a few places we had decided to visit during the day. When I asked the Taxi driver if he would go, he walked away from his vehicle and a Tuk Tuk driver came to us saying he would take us around a few Buddhist temples and the Thai expo for 60 Baht. I found this good enough since these places were nearby which he showed us using a map and so I wasn’t surprised by the low rate of hiring the Tuk Tuk. He told us that the Wat Pho and the Grand Palace which is where we wanted to go was closed due to the Kings Birthday celebrations and instead he would take us to the Standing Buddha, Lucky Buddha Temple and Thai Expo. After the first temple when we reached the Lucky Buddha temple we were accosted by a respectable looking local who told us that visiting the Temple during that particular time is considered lucky and very few tourists actually know about it. Though initially we avoided him he was going on about various things that tourists must see and the entire week being Kings Birthday Celebrations the Thai Govt has organized certain expo where Sapphire and other gems indigenous to Thailand would be available at very low prices and without Taxes, especially for tourists and the tuk tuk drivers too are benefitted as the Govt pays them some fees for bringing tourists to the Expo. Hearing these stories we decided to visit the expo and see if it was worthwhile. Accordingly, we went to Baan Thai Gems where the ‘Expo’ was being held and were shown around by a salesman named Nick. The showroom looked large and of good repute, which was why we decided to look at the Jewellery and purchase some pieces. The salesman too told us that Sapphire was priced lowest in Bangkok as compared to India so we have made a very good deal. We made a purchase of 23,000 Baht worth of jewellery and proceeded to Chatu Chak market by the same tuk tuk.
After going around the market when we returned, the tuk tuk was nowhere to be seen, that was when we started getting suspicious since we had not paid him the 60 Baht that he had charged. Returning to the hotel when we checked the price of same type of Sapphire jewellery in India, we found that it was worth only about 3000 Baht and the name Baan Thai in particular was found related to all the scams with tourists in Bangkok. On further search on the net it was found that these jewelers are at the helm of a huge ring of such scamsters who con tourists with false advertisements and do not return the money when demanded for exchange. In fact some tourist had also been threatened and man handled by these people when they insisted on refund. This was when I approached the Indian Embassy at Bangkok and explained the entire incident. They were indeed very helpful and utilized their official channels to get in touch with the tourist police. This approach helped us to get help from the Tourist police Lieutenant, otherwise the tourist police too are hand in glove most of the times with these scamsters.
We reached the jeweler again with support from the embassy and the police and were immediately taken to the manager who refunded the entire amount on the spot. It should however be noted that ours was an exceptional case as most people either realize the con too late or are not given back the money at all with the additional risk and humiliation of being manhandled by these thugs.‬
