The address for this place is wrong, it’s the Military Horse Racing Course, if you go to Lanna Sports Centre then you will have a 20-30 minute walk to the course. Make sure your taxi driver knows where you want to go.
There is about 50 minutes between each race with no other attractions to keep you occupied so it could be a bit boring for anyone not interested in the racing itself.
The races are short, no more than 4 furlongs or half a mile so they last less than two minutes.
The minimum bet is 20 baht so it doesn’t cost much for a bit if fun.
I paid 100 baht for A/C had a few beers and a snack, watched three faces and then left.

For THB 20 you get a seat in the open-air grandstand, or for THB 100 a seat in the airconditioned room underneath the judges' box, right at the finish line. Food and drinks are available at many places or you can bring your own. Betting is easy and there are usually about eight races every Saturday afternoon - unless the Saturday is a Buddhist holy day, in which case the races may be held the following day - Sunday. Programmes (THB 20) are in Thai, but occasionally there are English-language programmes as well. Races more or less follow the programme but the starts are often delayed - perhaps to give more time to place bets ...

As a horse person who worked in the racing industry abroad, I was very fascinated with the concept of Chiang Mai having a race course. The experience itself left mixed feelings. On the one hand, this is probably one of the only places you'll get to see horses in Thailand.(apart from over-priced farang aimed tours), regular stand tickets are cheap (30 Baht) and for 100 Baht you can go in the air conditioned VIP room with all the army generals and horse owners. The manual is offered only in Thai (and even as a seasoned overseas race better you'll find it hard to make sense out of) and costs 20 Baht. For a clueless tourist, it's a nice day out. You get treated like VIP, you won't see many farangs in general, it's one of the only legal betting activities in Thailand and so it attracts LOTS of people. At first glance the horses look well, they parade them around, then you wait for a about an hour for them to actually run (the races are NEVER on time...please note that if they say the race starts at 12.30 it's more likely to be 13.20). Bets start at 20 Baht and the operators know enough English to understand the horse number and "Place" or "win".
Now to the controversial part:
It ain't clean. As a horse person, and an animal lover I really hated that.
For most horses, Chiang mai is the end of the line. The horses that run here are old (by racing standards) most are between 7-10 years old. They are "leftovers" from overseas and from the races in Bangkok. Half of them are injured (and still pushed to run) and most if not all are doped.
It's not uncommon for horses to break legs and something like that happens nearly every week. You can sometimes see them lying shot in the pan close to the road leading to the races.
They say the racing industry is harsh everywhere...it may be true, but it's all the more so in Chiang Mai.

What a fun day! We went to the VIP room(100 Baht each) for it can be pretty warm outside . In the VIP room you can eat drink and bet in air con comfort. Min bet is 20 Baht and in general there are 10 races with 7 horses per race. We had a great day and will definately be going again.

Great cheap way to spend the afternoon (betting not included) we always stay in the VIP rooms as they have food, drink, betting booths, toilets and TV screens for the racing, also the rooms are right on the finish line.
I have taken many a tourist/friends here for a day out and enjoyed the whole experience

Interesting to see horse racing and being able to bet on them. Besides the lottery this is the only legal betting in Thailand. An air-conditioned VIP Clubhouse, large Grandstand or outside are all available with plenty of thai food & drinks scattered throughout the grounds.

Race course is situated in the north of the city next to Rama 9 Park and the Lanna Golf Course on the road to Fang. It's an oval dirt track of about 3 km with a small golf course inside. Meetings are held on Saturday. Facilities include grandstand, parade ring, betting windows etc. and cheap Thai dishes are available.

They're "supposed" to start at 10am and finish around 4:45pm. In reality each race is approx 20-30 mins late as they're constantly waiting for more people to place bets and maximize profits.

Hi , We have been to Chiang Mai several times , just wondering how you were able to be in the vip area ? Is it like singapore races where you provide your passport as a visitor or did you visit with a local ?

Anyone can be a VIP for 100 baht instead of the normal 20 baht, you can go alone.
Is the racetrack open November 4, 2017 Loy Krathorn?
