This review is for the three-day Northern Coastal tour.
I'd first like to mention that the entire experience of booking the tour to actually traveling along the northern coast was expertly arranged by Yen Nguyen. At every turn, she was an excellent communicator and even helped me last minute when I was having a visa issue. I also appreciate the level of pre-trip planning (what gear did I have, what is my level of experience, review of social/website) that Yen facilitated to ensure the best experience possible. A huge thank you to her:)
I spent three days with Tung Phan and Tung Vu, exploring the northeastern coast and popping into markets, fishing villages, and an incredibly beautiful sunset at Infinity Beach. While the itinerary was packed, there was a lot of flexibility to pursue interests that popped up along the way. Visiting a huge new Catholic cathedral, which we saw in the distance while driving and taking a detour, and taking pictures with all the visitors was certainly not on the Vietnam bingo card.
Phan and Vu are exceptional photographers, and I would say that some of the most memorable parts of the tour were simply geeking out about cameras and all our favorite street photographers. A lasting memory from this trip will certainly be the warmth and compassion that Phan and Vu bring to their work and how we were welcomed so generously at every turn.
Don't hesitate to book with Vietnam in Focus.

Fuong was a great guide and she brings her insights as a journalistic photographer to her tour. I got some great tips and had a wonderful time using my camera in ways that I didn't know I could. This was also a great cultural tour as we explored one of the markets just as it was waking up. I highly recommend this tour and this organization.

I landed in Hanoi and was instantly overwhelmed. I did not know where to land my lens, neither how to get where I wanted to be. Going out early with Brian was lovely. I got a feel for the local community and how to calm my focus in all the bustle.

The time with Tung could not be more exciting or more valuable. This session, Hanoi Explorer is a great introduction to Hanoi taking in some of the most special places. Starting with the 6am Ho Chi Min city to Han Oi express in deserted streets then a quick walk over to Thong Nhat Park to capture the sunrise tai chi practice. Tung’s guidance is invaluable that helped me get shots that will long be admired. His style of quiet coaching and sharing his vision helps my enthusiastic amateur become just a little better. I enjoyed it so much it would be my first go to place on a return visit to Hanoi. From there over to Long Bien Bridge – get ready to watch the world pass by – either on the bridge or beneath it. It is a place you could stay for hours and get amazing shots of Hanoi living its life. Again it is Tung’s quiet guidance that makes the shots I took stand apart. From there into the real Hanoi old quarter for a few last shots and a steaming bowl of pho. The perfect introduction to Hanoi

Our photographer guide was Tung Phan who has an extensive experience being a photo journalist and photographer. Started the tour on time and was very helpful in explaining where we were going and the objective of photos at the site. He is very knowledgeable, professional and helpful in obtaining great photographs at each site. We used Grab (similar to Uber) to go from site to site which worked well. If you want to see some places to photograph in Hanoi your will not find on your own. I highly recommend this tour. It is a whirlwind tour to get everything in. Ended the tour with tea and pho for breakfast!

Vietnam in Focus – Thổ Hà Traditions (Rice Paper Village)
My day with Tung in Thổ Hà was absolutely superb. From the moment we started, with shots taken while waiting for the ferry to cross into the village, Tung guided me to see things differently. He has such a masterful eye, and anyone looking to improve their composition skills would benefit from his expertise. His approach is gentle yet effective, suggesting subtle improvements and showing new perspectives on the scenes before us.
As the light began to rise, we photographed the village market setting up for the day. We then moved to a casual game of volleyball, where Tung expertly transferred his skills to capture the scene. The real highlight, however, was the rice paper production. This process is truly special, and it was fascinating to see it up close, from the ground-floor production spaces to the meticulous placement of rattan racks for drying. Wandering the alleys and capturing the essence of it all was a deeply immersive experience.
Working with Tung to "see" the moments in front of us and connect with this centuries-old tradition was unforgettable. The result was a collection of stunning photos, but more importantly, the chance to witness and document a piece of local culture. I couldn’t recommend this experience highly enough.

We started this amazing tour with the lovely Phuong at the Mua Caves 500 steps lookout. Phuong offered some great advice on composition and exposure.
We arrived early, before it got busy and Phuong was extremely patient with navigating our way slowly up the steps to capture the amazing views from the top.
We moved on to the ceramic village and again Phuong’s advice on composition was amazing and I was able to capture some great shots.
We went to the pottery village which was the highlight of the tour and one of my favourite places that I visited in Vietnam. The texture, colours and people were phenomenal to capture and Phuong’s advice was invaluable.
I highly recommend Vietnam in Focus for any of their tours. I was so impressed with the ultimate Hanoi tour that I ended up booking the Ninh Binh tour sloth short notice.
They were very accommodating with customising the tour and organising it in a short time.
I got to experience a culture that I would not have seen if it wasn’t for this and the other tour that I did.
Two absolutely amazing experiences.

I had an amazing experience on the ultimate Hanoi photography tour.
The day started early with Brian taking us to the lesser known part of train street where Brian guided me on exposure and composition. Brian timed our arrival well with time to take some shots of the track before the train arrived.
We were fortunate to see three trains in our time there.
We moved on to thieves markets, Thong Nhat Park, and the vermicelli village which all offered amazing photo opportunities with guidance again from Brian. To be able to capture people in their natural environment was amazing. I got to capture some wonderful shots in this morning part of the tour.
We were handed to Tung for the second part of the tour which started at the incense village and ended at the night markets. Tung gave invaluable advice on composition and really made me think outside of the square. Again I was amazed at the images I was able to capture and was grateful for the guidance from Tung.
If it wasn’t for this tour, I would not have had the opportunity to capture the images I did and I have these precious memories to take home with me.

This program by Vietnam in Focus is the best travel experience I've signed up for during my travels across the globe. I've participated in food tours, wine trips, sake tastings, cooking classes, history tours and art tours. This program ranks the best of all the programs I've done for the following reasons:
1. Best Value - I flew to Hanoi for the sole purpose of participating in this immersive photo tour and workshop - and it was worth every dollar plus some! It has been the most fulfilling program because it did not only surpass my expectation from a photography standpoint, but I came out of this with a much better appreciation for the culture and the destination.
Vietnam in Focus assigned three incredible professional photographers for my full day immersion. I spent the early morning with Phoung who worked with me on composition, street photography techniques and helped me with camera settings while we photographed the famous Hanoi train tracks (away from the tourists), a neighborhood market and a popular Hanoi park. Brian took me to a vermicelli and incense village that I would have never been able access if I had done it on my own. We walked the entire incense village as if we lived there because the locals knew him. As a result, I was able to take better photos of the workers and the residents. We shared a meal at a local restaurant and talked about his life in Hanoi (from NYC), other VIF programs I should entertain and more helpful lessons on how I can maximize the features of my cameras (Leica Q2 Monochrom and Sony A7II). I spent the evening with Tung at Long Bien Market. There, he worked with me on the panning technique. He also shared valuable lessons on how to better capture photo subjects in a setting as busy as the market. More importantly, he showed me the importance of patience when doing street photography and for "waiting" for the "shot."
I've always loved photography since I received my first camera as a child. This experience gave me a sense of purpose for this craft that I love. It gave me justification for the amount of money I spend on cameras and trips!!!
2. Sense of Place - There is something to be said about spending an entire day looking at the destination through the viewfinder of a camera. It allowed me to slow down and truly capture the essence of the subject matter (and destination). I felt a better connection with the people I took pictures of. I felt I was able to to share a better narrative through my photos because meh guides were able to translate our conversations with the locals.
3. Excellent Communication - Hai from Vietnam in Focus made me feel like their most important customer through all my interactions with their office. I felt like I had a butler from the moment I signed up. Instructions were clear from what gear to bring to what to wear for the day. Vietnam in Foucs is run like a well-oiled machine.
I highly recommend this program by Vietnam in Focus. It's truly one of the most fulfilling things I've done. Bravo!

Can you do this tour with an iPhone 8?
كُتب بتاريخ 2 سبتمبر 2018
Hi Sophie, thanks for your question. Yes, you certainly can use an iPhone for the tour.
All best,
Alex

Hello,
I don't think I'll have a free morning in Hanoi. I was thinking of scheduling the private tour, but will I miss out on a lot of good photo opportunities if I'm unavailable during morning hours? Should I plan to spend an extra day in Hanoi so I can do it in the morning, and get the most out of my tour? I wanted to take pictures of markets in good lighting. Thanks a lot!

Hi there! We can run the Hanoi Explorer tour with you at any time that works with your schedule. If it's too late for Long Bien market, which closes by 7am, we'll head to nearby Dong Xuan market, which is just as colorful and photogenic. We'll also explore some of the little alleyways of street sellers around Dong Xuan before heading down the railway tracks into the Old Quarter. Best, Alex

Hi There,
How long is the $160 private tour? Is it all day?
Thanks,
Marilyn
كُتب بتاريخ 20 يوليو 2017
Hi Marilyn,
Thanks for your question. The Hanoi Explorer private tour is 4 hours long, but you can choose the time you'd like to go. The price will be cheaper depending on how many friends you'd like to join. Very best, Alex
