We visited the cafe several times on our holiday. The cool, quiet open air cafe is a little oasis in the middle of hectic Istanbul. The staff are very friendly and helpful and we loved the refreshing sherbet drinks and Turkish tea as well as snacks. Definitely a favourite memory of Istanbul!

I wanted to buy some art or crafts pieces on my visit to Istanbul, but was discouraged by what was on offer at the Grand Bazaar and the gift shops around Sultanahmet--mostly things of dubious provenance (much was made in China). Prices in the typical tourist shops tend to be inflated because haggling is expected, something I much dislike doing. By contrast, Istanbul Sanatlari Carsisi is not a business; it's a state-sponsored non-profit organization; all revenue (minus operational expenses) goes to the support of professional artists. This means that the pieces are authentic, and the prices ethical, ranging from affordable to expensive.
This is a collection of tiny shops in a beautiful building that also features a serene courtyard cafe. Each shop features a specialized, traditional Turkish art form, including miniature paintings, porcelain, textile art, calligraphy and more. Everything is original and of excellent quality. Some of the artists are teachers in their field. I ended up spending a couple of hours at the place because there were so many beautiful things to look at, and the atmosphere was peaceful and hustle-free.
This place is unique as far as the Istanbul shopping experience is concerned. Don't miss out. It's right around the corner from the Ayasofya.

I wanted to make sure to add my experience here. Yes we all hear stories about Rug salesmen but I do feel this place is reputable. The demonstration of weaving and the thoughtful presentation by Ibrahim was very professional. The rugs are beautiful and admittedly we were so impressed that although we hadn’t planned to buy a rug we got caught up in the moment and handed over our credit card. After a night to think about it we realized that it was a rash decision (we typically take many months to make decisions about any purchase never mind a costly one like this). Ibrahim was extremely professional and accepted the request to return the rug - disreputable sellers would just continue pushing but Ibrahim is a gentleman. We truly appreciate their understanding and hope to come back in the future.

First of all, never go to a rug shop where your tour guide or cruise ship takes you. The price will be significantly higher as they pay high commission/referral fees. We went to 4 rug shops (reputable - longtime in business) while in Istanbul and purchased rugs from 3 of them. Our other two experiences were wonderful (we will be handing out cards to both shops to our friends) but handicraft was a horrible experience. I learned soon after purchase they I purchased a $1,000 rug for $2.800. This was a non hand made rug. I learned as at another rug shop I showed that as an example of something we liked and they brought out a rug almost exactly the same for $1,800 less. I went back to rug shop to cancel my order and this is when all the lying began. I was there on Sunday (36 hours after sale) and they relayed the their business did not arrive until Monday morning. I was there at 9 am Monday morning and asked to cancel my order. I was told they had already shipped the order. All 3 other rug stores told me that no one would have shipped that fast. I asked to see the shipping and they asked me to wait downstairs. They took me upstairs to business office at 9:25 a.m. and showed me the UPS ticket and said it had been shipped. I looked up tracking number and showed the label had been created at 9:16 a.m. not only does handicraft rip you off, they also lie, lie and lie. I have include a picture of the sales person (don’t buy from Rip Off Rug Guy) as well as ups label created same day.

We had in mind we wanted a carpet for our new home. We spoke to our guide about it for his recommendation and he suggested this place, (and yes I'm sure he gets a referral fee but that doesn't diminish the quality of the place and better to go with a trusted place instead of a random store). Very nice and modern store, multi levels and very clean. Great arrival experience, our guide was Mr. Kerim, who greeted us warmly, offered us refreshments, and gave us the history on Turkish carpets and the shop itself, very professorial! He showed us the intricacy on how the carpets are made with a live demonstration by one of the ladies, fascinating! So much work goes into each carpet, they are really pieces of art, they can be passed on for generations. He asked us initial questions on size and style and then the parade of carpets proceeded which is a pretty cool process. He showed us dozens of them to single out the one we liked and to compare and make sure we were certain, but like art, the right carpet chooses you, and we fell in love with ours.
Once we settled on the carpet, the pricing was about what we expected and the negotiations went as we expected. We are not hagglers so quickly agreed to a price we were very happy with. He also explained the benefit of this shop is it is subsidized by the Turkish government so they can be competitive with pricing and they can offer free door-to-door shipping and take care of the customs fee for us (this was a significant convenience and savings). We filled out the paperwork for the addresses and delivery, a few certification signatures on the items we had purchased (we got 2 rugs) and paid. At no time did I have any feeling of mistrust or suspicion that this was not a legit business or legit process. They told us it would take about 4 weeks for the rugs to arrive as they ship it out by bulk along with other orders. Again, I fully trusted them, we shook hands and left the store with full paperwork and receipts in hand.
Fast forward to 2 weeks later and we returned home from our vacation and I received an email from the VP of the company telling me the order is on the way via UPS along with a tracking #. On the date of arrival, UPS dropped off the package with no issues, it was very well packed and arrived with no damages. When we opened the package, the certifications with my signature we had signed at the store was attached to each carpet!
To recap, it is a very legit store, the entire staff was very professional, friendly, and warm, our salesperson explained everything perfectly, the purchasing process was very easy and stress free, absolutely no pressure sales, and the delivery process is completely reliable. I did read some review of someone showing up with the rugs to try to sell more rugs, which does not make sense as UPS delivered directly to us (and you can track it). I highly recommend this place, great product and great service, they treated us with nothing but respect and I’ll go back the next time for additional carpets. (Side note – It just happened to be my birthday the day we went in, and once they found out, a lot of the employees came up to me to wish me a happy birthday – Super nice touch!!!).

After visiting quite a few shops, we happened upon the best shop, the best sales assistant and the best product lines!! I tried to describe to a number of people what I was looking for and nothing... It felt like what I was offered was what they wanted me to buy, not what I wanted. Until... the Istanbul Handicraft Centre!! It was great!! I am ashamed that I cannot remember his name... but if I can I will post his photo with my review. He was the best!! ❤

I visited this establishment back in June/early July whilst on a tour. I found a rug, fell in love and purchased. They are very over priced. They were kind enough to allow me to pay a deposit in AUD and we arraged for the remainder to be paid & rug to be sent over once I landed back in Australia. I have signed documents stating that I allow them to charge my credit card on conditions. I was very clear with them that I didnt trust the process and made sure they knew I would be all over it and take action if necessary.
Upon arrival back into Aus in October, I made contact to advise my credit card was stolen and the card had been deactivated. I told them I will be transferring to them as I dont trust them. I went to the bank and was told there would be a large fee as it is an international transfer. (Stupid I know!)To avoid the cost of that transfer I reluctantly signed another form for them to deduct said amount. They ended up taking a larger sum out of my account so I questioned them. They tried to say it was due to the exchange rate, however, I authorised them to take out the money in AUD. After one firey phone call they agreed to give me my money back. They followed through with what they said however gave me $5 AUD short...imagine my frustration. So I am now currently trying to contact them again, although it is only $5 its purely the principle!
They are clearly extremely eager to take people's money and it's just so unfortunate that soo many tour groups go through there.

We were brought here as part of a tour. The owners were so full on about you buying a rug you felt uncomfortable. They were pushy, rude and just would not stop. They cracked it when you didn’t purchase anything, even though it was made clear that we’ weren’t interested after having a look politely. They even tried to guilt you into a purchase. I recommend going somewhere else to purchase a rug.

I visited this center in May when I was in Istanbul. Absolutely the best selection of quality rugs in Istanbul, Vibrant colors, well made. Not at all like those found on the street shops. Highly recommended.
Also, the jewelry shop in the same location has beautiful jewelry for men and women displayed attractively. Unusual designs I did not see elsewhere in the city. For a special piece this is the place to visit.
