This imposing mosque is located in the historic heart of Istanbul. Its construction dates back to 1496, making it one of the oldest in the city. It suffered serious damage in three earthquakes and had to be rebuilt each time. A large dome of almost fourteen meters in diameter stands out, typical of Ottoman architecture. We only visited its exterior due to lack of time, since we only stayed a few hours.

The mosque is an important historical and cultural piece of Istanbul's Eminonu district. Built in 1496-1497. Grand Vizier Atik Ali Pasha during the reign of Sultan Bayezid II. Over the next 300 years, it was destroyed three times by earthquakes, but each time it was restored. For the last two and a half centuries it has remained unchanged... PS. The “main photo of the property” on the Tripadvisor website shows the Nurosmaniye Mosque, the Atik Ali Pasha Mosque looks a little more modest...

At one time, in the “wilds” of the World Wide Web that entangled humanity, I came across a statement that made me think: “Fatih is the soul of the city, the echo of Constantinople...”. As you understand, we are talking about the Fatih district of Istanbul.
And if I completely and completely agree with the first part of it, because I was imbued with the spirit of this şehrin alanı, then I somehow did not hear the mentioned “echo” of Constantinople... Apparently because I was “imprisoned” in my pedestrian crossings, mainly under the sacred component of Istanbul.
And it, this very component, is presented here for all tastes, needs and “colors”. On another not-so-sunny October morning, I was cheerfully marching from north to south along Vezirhan Caddesi, when next to the Çemberlitaş tram stop, just across the road from the legendary Column of Constantine, another Fatih sacral was “waiting” for me - the Ali Pasha Mosque (Gazi Atik Ali). Pasha Camii or Atik Ali Pasa Mosque). Let me tell you - the object is extremely interesting in historical and architectural terms because it was erected more than FIVE CENTURIES ago - in 1496-1497, during the reign of Sultan of the Ottoman Empire Bayezid II.
Agree, five centuries is impressive!!! The construction of this quite majestic religious building, which is by no means lost against the background of the nearby mosques of Nurosmaniye, Baezida, Sokollu Mehmet Pasha, etc., is associated with the name of the great vizier (then still future) of Bosnali Hadim Atik Ali Pasha.
The latter, at the time of the construction of the sacral, held the position of governor of Rumelia (etymologically - “Land of the Romans”, at that time meaning the territory of Eastern Orthodox Christians of the Byzantine rite, corresponding to the Balkans). In addition to the mosque itself, the complex erected with the care of the mentioned nobleman included a madrasah, an imaret (dining room), a tekke (a dervish house), a caravanserai and a türbe (tomb).
Today, only the buildings of the mosque and madrasah, as well as the türbe, have survived from the entire complex. The main element - Atik Ali Pasa Mosque in a number of sources is also referred to as the Sedefchiler Mosque, Cemberlitash Mosque and Sandykcilar Mosque (respectively
Sedefçiler Mosque, Çemberlitaş Mosque, Sandıkçılar Mosque).
The sacral was simply catastrophically unlucky in earthquakes: in 1648, its dome collapsed and its minaret was partially destroyed; in 1716 and 1766 there were further serious destructions. But, despite natural disasters, the Ali Pasha Mosque was reborn like a Phoenix from the ashes at the behest of the next Sultan.
For the architecture, a couple of “strokes”: the rectangular main volume is built from massive hewn stones and is covered with a central (main) dome with a diameter of 13.3 meters, which is based on a half-dome and four small domes. Illumination of the interior of the mosque (with natural light) was achieved using sixteen windows located in the lower part of the central dome and window openings located in other domes.
The minaret at Atik Ali Pasa Mosque is represented in the singular. “Spiced up” with one shurfe (balcony), it, unfortunately,
largely lost its original appearance after the earthquake of 1648, and what we see now is the result of restoration in the 19th century.
