Well, it’s been over a year that I was surfing, windsurfing and kite surfing the internet for my perfect rug. Traditional motives but not too traditional, minimal philosophy but with a kick, neutral colors but not so neutral that you don’t even notice it, woolen and handmade but without the price tag of a sofa, my mission was difficult to say the least. And then I stepped in to this shop in the Grand bazaar of Istanbul. I didn’t know which one I will choose ,and Ali did a wonderful job at helping me with his patience and knowledge and advices, but I knew for sure I will not leave without a rug from there.
I can’t recommend Dhoku enough, and the people that work there, all of them . Now I have an absolutely superb rug and the memory of finding it in the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul makes it really priceless

I visited Turkey and its Grand Bazaar about two years ago.
I have two regrets:
1. Visiting the Bazaar on the last day. The place is huge and you’d definitely need more time to explore everything the place has to offer. Putting the Grand Bazaar on my last day was not the perfect idea, as everything was done in haste, taking account that I had a plane to catch.
2. Passing by dhoku in Grand Bazaar but not deciding to go inside.
I finally contacted dhoku two years later via email for some inquiries on their rugs. I told them what I’m looking for and they are happy to assist and reply my emails. Cem was the guy I corresponded with and helped me out with the selection or rugs. Correspondence, payment and delivery were all done easily, no hassle, no trouble. I was happy with the rug that I’ve purchased. I like its vibrant colors and the rug felt very sturdy and well made. I recommend dhoku to you TA readers out there, especially when you have time to visit them in Istanbul. Visiting their store physically might be more fun and gives you more advantage by actually seeing and feeling the rugs directly. So if you happen to be in Istanbul and the Grand Bazaar, make sure you drop by in dhoku.

It strikes you the moment you walk. No, that is not the usual rug shop of Grand Bazar. This is sheer beauty. I was blinded by the colors, the patterns are surprising. Nothing can be taken for granted at Dhoku. Mindblowing experience!

we set out to buy a smallish (6' x 7') modern design, traditionally made (knotted) rug for the guest room.
we visited a couple of rug merchants in Sultanamet near our hostel and, of course, they were the usual fun. ("I don't have, but my cousin...", "Let me show you this..." and "Would you like coffee?") but no one had modern designs, although I was (a little) seduced by a tribal rug...
Anyway, Lonely Planet recommended Dhoku in the Grand Bazaar: our hopes were not high, thinking it was probably touristy...
But NO. It was wonderful. Lots of modern designs done for Biennales; and "patchwork" rugs made from (often) antique very worn knotted rugs.
Tempted by a patchwork: (they are relatively economical and I liked the reuse part). But I asked Memet (founder, I think) how they wear. He said it is not a rug you will hand down to grandchildren, great-grandchildren, but he, himself has a big one in his home and showed us cell phone pix, with his v. cute little child playing on the rug.
It seemed to us, pretty messy livers, the designs we liked best were just too light (cream with dark brown figures). Also, these rugs were all Kilims, that I thought we didn’t want.
Then Memet casually said, “We can make a custom one for you. Your colors.”
WOW!
What an exciting idea, but how much? Memet came back with a price and we thought it was quite reasonable (though not cheap) for a custom rug and actually not that much more than the off-the-shelf rug.
The design we wanted was one with funny caterpillar-like shapes that Memet told us was an interpretation of the plan of the Grand Bazaar.
So we told him the size he wanted and an associate disappeared to a computer and returned with a printout showing how the design would/could fit close to the size we wanted. Voila!
We settled down to pick colors using samples, then Memet said, “You can pick different colors for the shapes. If it were mine I might use a bright color for the section of the Bazaar that was originally the rug sellers’ section.” He actually showed us where his very shop could/sort of be (given the abstraction of the representation).
We loved the idea and proceeded to do just that (although the spouse vetoed the bright color idea).
We are both architects so we loved the fact our new rug was going to be a floor plan of a historic site and picking the colors was an amazingly satisfying brush with actually designing.
At Dhoku there is no haggling: we liked that. A fair price, quoted, paid, was fine with us. Memet was totally gracious, professional, and helpful. We finally asked for coffee (maybe it wasn’t offered b/c we were in Istanbul during Ramadan…and maybe Memet was fasting…)
We paid 50% down with a credit card; the rest due on delivery in 3-4 months. They sent us the image of the completed rug and told us it was on its way: and it arrived (then FedEx made a hash of the delivery but that was totally not Dhoku’s fault).
We got the rug; adore it; and hope our great-grandchildren enjoy it.
One of the great souvenirs, ever.
If you go and are serious about a rug, plan to spend the time necessary for the purchase of a significant item. And say hi to Memet for me.
(really, we were there in June 2015)

My wife and I visited Istanbul in May/June 2016 and found the Dhoku carpet store in the Grand Bazaar. We had a Monocle travel guidebook with us that had recommended the store as well, but admittedly we were still somewhat nervous about spending a lot of money for goods that would be shipped back home to Canada. We fell in love with the carpets and took the leap in purchasing three! Our carpets arrive home within a week...so our worries really were needless.
As you walk within the Grand Bazaar you will be approached by shop owners offering great selection at the best prices. However, at Dhoku we never felt that we were under any pressure whatsoever. If you're looking for a carpet, seek out Semsettin. He was an absolute gentlemen and was very informative, helpful and patient. He even took the time to show us around to learn about Turkish coffee and Tea, as well as pottery!
We recommend Dhoku and especially the helpful hospitality of Semsettin...and we love our carpets!

If you are looking for unique and modern then this is the place for you to visit. They do not negotiate much so be prepared to pay but the quality is good.

Like others we wandered past the shop not expecting to buy but the contemporary designs caught out eye. Ali was fantastic and we bought a beautiful carpet!

We did not anticipate buying a rug while in Istanbul - but the tasteful designs and the friendly customer service drew us in. Semsettin, our salesperson, is part of the family that owns Dhoku. Prices were very fair. It isn't immediate obvious, but they also own a pillow shop and a light fixture shop as well. The pillows and light fixture shades can be made with personally selected vintage ikat fabric designs - many choices to choose from. Shipping was so reasonable! For all the cautionary rug tales you might read in guidebooks, Dhoku is a trustworthy, experienced, high-quality rug dealer, with tasteful original designs that would look beautiful in any stylish home.
