Mount Herzl is a national cemetery for the State of Israel. It is located near Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Memorial. Mount Herzl is the resting place of those who have fallen in the line of duty, including Jews, Druze, Muslims and Christians. Traditionally, Jewish burials take place within 24 hours of passing. No other memorial testifies to the determination of the Jewish people to defend their homeland.

This cemetery is beautiful, and includes memorials to Theodore Herzl, as well as dignitaries like Simon Peres, Golda Meir, and Yitzhak Rabin. It is a quiet, beautiful, and reflective place. The cemetery is a short walk on the "connecting path" from Yad Vashem and would be a great addition to any visit to this must-be-visited holocaust memorial.

After our very poignant experience at Yad Vashem, we went to the nearby Mount Herzl cemetery. We slowly walked for 2 hours there paying tribute to Golda Meir, Izhak Rabin, Shimon Peres, the IDF fighters perished in the Independence, the Six Days and the Yom Kippur Wars, and after...
The photos of very young IDF soldiers in the plots of the fallen in the wars and fights against terrorism after the Yom Kippur War brought me to tears They were twenty year olds when they were killed, several girls among them… Their graves are covered with books they liked, photos of their happy days spent on the beaches of Tel Aviv, pictures of their pets, even of beer bottles… They were never able to enjoy their studies, hobbies, friends, love… They will stay in my memory forever.
So many heroes sacrificed their lives to protect the State of Israel. En Brera (no choice) was their driving force - they had to save Israel for all the Jews of the world and they did it with honor and distinction. Hats off to them…

Must see - tombs of leaders such as Hertzl, Golda Meier, martyrs such as Hannah Sennesh - people who helped create Israel. Deeply moving. Located directly above Yad Vashem. Very powerful symbolism and very moving place

No Jewish soldier is ever abandoned on the battlefield, they are rescued and buried in Mt Herzl National Cemetery. More than 20,000 young men and women have died fighting for their country, most hardly out of high school, a heavy toll for a small nation. One person said to me "how long must we go on fighting?" Another friend said, "How long do you want to go on living?"

PROS
• Iconic and large Israeli memorial location
• A major tourist attraction
• Israeli national monument
• Final resting place of national founders and leaders
• Final resting places of Jewish and Israeli heroes- hundreds if not thousands of 29 year old (and younger- see my photos)
• Scene of Israeli national commemorations and ceremonies
• Beautiful manicured gardens
• Quiet and serene
• Learn about Jewish martyrs and heroes outside Israel
CONS
• Vast, complex design and large
• Lots off walking and steps
• Sobering
• Needs a travel guide
MY EXPERIENCE
“I visited this place” on the annual Israel Memorial Day. It was very very crowded- tens of thousands of Israelis and families of the fallen make an annual pilgrimage on this day to unite again with and honor the fallen heroes. It was instructive and inspiring to see how they honored the memory and sat in quiet solitude or shared stories and words of comfort and inclusion and strength.
I learned about Jews who served in the two World Wars and about the sacrifices and losses of Ethiopian Jews in their noble steps to reach this Holy Land.
I did not visit the area of national founders and leaders- that fired less for me than seeing rows and rows and rows and rows of final resting place of 19 year old boys.
MY TIP

ביקור בהיכל ההנצחה, מאד מרגש ומרתק לראות את המבנה היוצא דופן, ההשקעה בתכנון המבנה וההנצחה המכובדת של חללי מלחמות ישראל.

In this Park/National Cemetery is located Hetzl monument and ALL israeli soldiers that have given their lifes in all wars.
I think it's important to see it and understand the sacrifice of the Jewish people for their own country.

I will be staying in Tel Aviv but would like to take a day touring the various sites at Mt Herzl. What is available including transportation to wherever I meet the tour.

First of all, Har Hertzel where all our soldiers are buried is magnificent....I hope that is what you are referring to. Taxi is fine. You can even arrange to have it wait for you if you like. I don't know how long your tour is, but you can also easily get a taxi anyplace in Jerusalem. Have a wonderful time. It is very meaningful.

I am very interested in visiting the IDF section of Mt. Herzl. Are there signs and maps available in English. I would like to visit the grave sites of Yitzak Rabin, Golda Meir and Yonatan Netanyahu. Can you tell the approximate walking distance from Mt Herzl. . Also, can you give me the approximate walking distance from the IDF cemetery to the Yad Vashem Memorial.
Thank You
Sincerely,
Mark Provenzano

Yes to finding IDF Graves and other very significant hero's. I visited all mentioned and the on site office staff provide information. There are tours available too. I do not know the distance between Yadav Vashem & Cemetery but remember hills and heat.
