PROS
* Unique and special incredible one-of-a-kind "bird's-eye-view" of the ancient historical and Biblical Old City of Jerusalem
* Experience ancient history from more than 2000+ years ago on a ramparts built more than 600 years ago and view from above a living vibrant bustling city
* Imagine being medieval warriors defending the Old City
* This encircles most of the Old City in both directions from Jaffa Gate
CONS
* The walk is a challenging exercise- read strenuous
* Total sun exposure with no shade
* The walkway is craggy and uneven and can be slippery (even without rain)
* There are a good number of steep steps (going up and down) and they are huge
* There are infrequent exit points to descend
"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... because I attended an evening event in the Ophel (Davidson) Garden. The ramparts walk was not part of the agenda, no one was doing it and no one was supposed to be doing it.... but the entrance was open and unguarded, and so off I went. I climbed and i walked and I looked and I explored and I took a number of "helpful" 👍 photos .📷, including those of two mischievous boys following the adventurous 69 year old into uncharted territory.
The walk that i did started at Dung Gate and went to the east past Silwan (City of David National Park) and then turned north to approach the southern wall of the ancient Holy Jewish Temple, with the ancient steps and the excavations of buildings and ritual baths from 2000+ years ago displayed in all their glory. I then proceeded to stand directly underneath the soot-covered dome of Al Aqsa Mosque, with those behind a window with iron grates stared at me.
I watched from above as descendants of the Levitical caste of Biblical priestly assistants learned their "Hallel" (thanksgiving) songs that they were to perform for the Biblical Feast of Booths and Tabernacles.
I then came to the "piece-de resistance": I stood alone and unencumbered and unobserved and unmonitored absolutely next to the original southern wall of the Holy Temple. I could have touched it easily without even extending my arm, but I don't touch the Western Wall, so i didn't touch this southern wall either.
WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
Hey- I paid a trivial pittance of 20 Israeli shekels to enter by saying that I belonged to the Biblical Levitical caste of servants to the priests of that ancient Holy Jewish Temple. For that, I got to watch them practice and sing and perform in their dress regalia and to explore the stunning excavations of the amazing Ophel Archaeological Garden (Yitzhak Ben Youssef Levy Garden) and do this ramparts walk- see my many "helpful" 👍 photos 📷.
For commoners who are not royalty, the fee is 25 Israeli shekels with tickets purchased at Jaffa Gate.
WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN?
For sure and i intend to do that- if the event happens again, I'll say again that I am a member of that Biblical tribe.
ADVICE
* This is definitely recommended if one is fit to do the walk on narrow slippery stones and huge steep steps scattered throughout
* Obviously be in (reasonably) good shape and bring sun cream, sun shade (hat) and water

A trip to the kingdom in the east requires a lot of operation, but a travel and challenge company did it like adults.
We started the trip at Nahal Zard, or in the language of the locals, Wadi El Hassa, it was huge, day number 2 Petra and wow, simply wonderful, the seventh wonder of the world. Then on the last day a tour of the wonderful Wadi Rum

We tried this activity on a whim because we wanted to get a better feel for the layout of the city of Jerusalem. The tickets allow access to both the southern and northern ramparts (entrances are near the Jaffa gate). Ticket prices were reasonable and the entrance window allowed for flexibility in visit times.
I preferred the southern ramparts because they were cleaner and better maintained and the views were nicer overall.
I would not recommend this experience to anyone with mobility or balance issues as there are uneven surfaces/steps and slippery stones. Be sure to wear sturdy footwear and hold onto handrails.

Hidden gem of a tour in the old city of Jerusalem that you should try to do- a few things- don’t do this in August, it’s hot and a killer walking on top of the wall - I enjoyed it but you have been warned, also the signage isn’t the best make sure you hook up with a tour guide, try not to do this on your own. The wall is hard over 3 miles I believe and tons of stairs, is it’s not for the feint of heart - it’s a tough walk but we’ll worth it.
When you do the first part getting back to the Jaffe Gate is tough, so if you don’t have a guide don’t be afraid to ask around or jump in a taxi, the second half which starts at the David Tower was a walk in the park, some step steps but it was the easiest part, that ends at the Dung Gate near the Kotel. Do that first, visit the Kotel, grab a bite and then walk back to the Jaffe gate and do the second part.

First up , there are 2 routes for the Ramparts walk , the one I chose, was the Northern ( clockwise) route , the ticket office being located about 10 metres inside the old city's Jaffa gate - entrance fee is 25 shekels - you use the digital ticket to actually access the walk , at the beginning .
Before you EVEN CONSIDER doing this walk , it is advisable to take these common sense steps ( no pun intended )
1 The walk is strenuous /physically demanding ,and if you have knee or feet problems , then better to do something else .
2 Take good strong shoes for the walk , you can walk in sandals , but the stones of the wall are slippery ( even in Summer) from many thousands of walkers smoothing them down over the years .
3 Bring drinking water , you'll need it !!.
4 Stop regularly for photo breaks , or just to rest - the walk took me over an hour in the hot July Sun ,
4a Some people might need 2 hours .Some of the steps on the Ramparts walk are quite steep and narrow - you have been warned !!!,
5 if you don't think you can complete the entire route , there are escape exits along the way ,
6 .......and lastly take time to consider how these walls were constructed , they have withstood many wars and several rulers , if only modern houses were built so well !!! .

This is a fantastic walk. Well worth doing the longer Northern section as well as the Southern section. We are not young but just took our time, hats, sunblock, decent walking shoes and plenty of icy cold water! (We freeze water bottles!)
As well as seeing the 'main attractions' of the Old City and beyond from a different perspective, we also had an insight into the lives of people who live in the city. It was fab to see boys from the Christian Brothers' school using the basketball court in the holdiays!
The man in the ticket office was extemely friendly and helpful. Yes there are lots of steps but handrails everywhere and it is well fenced. We saw no-one on the Southern section and only a handful on the Northern. Wow!!

This gives you a very good perspective of the Old City, it’s buildings, people and their activities. We bought one ticket valid for both directions but went on two days. Lots of steps up and down but not overly demanding and there are always handrails. We stopped multiple times to take in the special views and to listen to the muezzin during Ramadan. Very pleased that we did.

I am aware that one Ticket for the Ramparts Walk covers both the Northern & Southern Walk. If I buy the ticket can I use it to do the walks on different days.
Thanks
Anthony
YES - we used the ticket to go North one day and then South the NEXT day... just confirm with the ticket agent when you buy it how long it is good for but you may definitely do it on different days. It is tiring enough that you'll probably prefer dividing it into 2 days. (Note that the ticket is single-use... so you cannot repeat the ramparts you previously enjoyed.)

Could someone please give me the exact location from where I can but a ticket to do the Ramparts "clockwise" Walk from Jaffa Gate to Lions Gate?
Thanking-you
Anthony
You pass the gate into the square, and immediately on your left there is the tourist office where you get the tickets.

I am going to Jerusalem in June and I know it will be hot at that time. On one day I am hoping to do this walk from Jaffa Gate to Lions Gate ... take a pause for Lunch... and then walk through the Garden of Gethsemane and the Mount of Olives. Am I giving myself too much walking, a lot of which is uphill, for one day?
Anthony
I am aware of the two walks here. One clockwise and one anti-clockwise starting at Jaffa Gate. Is it possible to actually begin the walk at Lions Gate and finish at Jaffa Gate...probably anti-clockwise?
Cheers
Anthony
That would be a good plan. However, you may only enter near the Jaffa Gate (because the other gates are exit only). The ticket sales office is just inside the Jaffa Gate - and the entrance that leads to the New Gate and Damascus Gate is close by. The walk that lead to the Zion Gate and Lions Gate is harder to locate - you must go outside the Old City Walls and walk South a moderate distance and that entrance is somewhat hidden. You scan you ticket and the turnstile unlocks for you. It is definitely worth doing both walks I think.

I will have just 4 days in Jerusalem soon. Is this time to really see the City?
Anthony
I'd say yes, but obviously it all depends how much time you spend on each site. You might want to make a list with opening hours, see what is available only during AM, what is available on the PM, and plan accordingly. Some museums are closed on Mondays, some open late on Tuesdays/Thursdays, etc. As others mentioned above, weekend might be a 'problem' for the tourist who'd want to make the best out of his/her schedule; the city slows down, all public institutions and transportation are not available to visit/use. Some museums are open on Saturdays and there are taxis available. Jerusalem is a beautiful city, and you would enjoy it very much in 4 days if you plan ahead.

Is it safe for an American to exit at the Damascus Gate which I believe is the Arab quarter
All of these responses are from a month ago - the recent Intifada activity in the last week makes that area questionable. It appears they are targeting Jews. They rely upon tourists and are not likely to target Americans at present.
