The days that fishing was the main activity of Kuwaitis have long past. Already from the mid 1700s Kuwait developed into a trading center. Building boats became a specialty and even after oil changed the economic structure of the country dramatically early 1950s, Kuwaitis still feel a strong connection with the sea.
Dhow harbour is still functional and instrumental in supplying fish to the nearby market, besides serving as cargo vessels. A pity the whole place is thoroughly fenced.

Between the closed off area of the Seif Palace government building and the Fishing Market is the Dhow Harbour, a still very active fishing port. Passing by at midday, there was not much activity, since the fish had already been brought to the fish market. All one could admire from the Corniche walkway were the many wooden boats, all next to each other and flying the Kuwaiti flag.
Dhow refers to any kind of traditional sailing vessel in the Indian Ocean, now almost all outfitted with motors. Most typical for Kuwait is the Boom, a larger than average dhow, probably first constructed here and now depicted with full sail in Kuwait's national emblem. A restored example, the Fateh-El-Khair, can be seen in the part of the Scientific Center in Kuwait City, which is also referred to as 'Dhow Harbour', although this one is more of a museum than an active fishing harbour.
