We enjoyed a great music and dance performance at the Damascus Opera House last week.
It was a grand performance by the traditional Whirling dervishes’( Milawiya) dancers and their accompanying music group.
My eldest grandson and my son had accompanied both my wife and me. This was the first time that our grandson had ever been to an Opera House, and he enjoyed it immensely!
The performance was in the Opera Theater, and it was full to capacity.
The full performance lasted about two hours, and it was well worth the time.
We all look forward to another performance in the Damascus Opera House.

The Damascus Opera House has been keeping very, very busy over the month preceding the Holy Month of Ramadan.
One of the best performances I had heard at the Opera House was a Greek Music Night. The star of the evening was the man playing the Greek Bouzouki. Simply the best Bouzouki music I have ever heard in my life.
I had lived in Greece many years ago and have always enjoyed the Bouzouki, but this night it was simply magnificent!
All the guest also seemed to have enjoyed this glorious and most wonderful Greek music as there was encore upon encore.

It may be hard to believe, but there are still many cultural activities to do in Damascus, despite the country having gone through more than 11 years of war!
The grand opera house hosts a multitude of plays and their tickets are nealy sold out, attracting a massive audience.

The Damascus Opera House and the Syrian National Orchestra has really out done itself last week as they had performed eight compositions of local Syrian Composers.
The pieces included: “Love Poem” by Solhi Alwadi; “Polka” by Subaib Al Samman; “Loss” by Adnan Fathallah; “The Swirl” by Asem Makarem and two of: Kenan Adnawi solo Oud works titled: “Capriccio” and “Love Dance” and finally Bassem Salha work called: “Qadduka Al Mayyas” for the solo Clarinet.
The entire audiences were raving about these pieces as many of the composers have passed away and this was a fitting tribute to each and every one of them.
The night before the Opera House hosted a domestic competition for the best Syrian Choir Group. They had four finalists coming from all around Syria. It was an extremely difficult choice as all four groups sang extremely well.
In conclusion, the Damascus Opera House is keeping very busy and each and every performance is a memorable concert and piece of art!

The Damascus Opera House has just celebrated its’ 18th Anniversary.
This concert was by invitation only.
Being a very exceptional event they had at the entrance a long “red carpet” to welcome all invitees.
They started the evening with various speakers talking about the history of the Damascus Opera House and the many special concerts which have been held over those eighteen years.
To celebrate they had a fantastic concert with Classical Music from: Camille Saint-Saëns to Aram Khachaturian. At the end of the program they even had a standing ovation and the orchestra responded by playing another piece and this time from Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture.
This special event was very well attended.
Finally, Everyone I spoke with after the concert all told me that they really had enjoyed the evening. It was extraordinary.

The Damascus Opera House was closed for a very short time from 2011 until 2019.and now due to the Corona Virus Crisis it was closed for just over four months.
So what we discovered was that the entrance to the Opera House there were multiple health checks such as: a temperature scan; a bacterial spray booth and finally a special hand spray. All the employees of the Opera House had a face mask.
Once we entered the Opera House Main Theater we discovered that every two seats were to remain empty as they had a red ribbon on each. Plus the Damascus Opera House issued each ticket with two seats separating each person!
I really felt safe during the entire performance and I really look forward for my return visit.
The program that evening was a very, very nice modern dance performance with an extremely dynamic video program.
If you really want to enjoy great musical program please plan to enjoy an eminent evening at the Damascus Opera House very soon.

The Damascus Opera House complex continues to be the center of arts and concerts in Damascus!
When one wants to spend a great evening enjoying either classical; Latin or piano concerts you must attend the numerous presentations taking place at the Damascus Opera House.
Just last week we had the pleasure and delight of hearing music from the Columbian National Orchestra. They presented a multitude of Latin Songs that delighted the entire audience.
Now that the slow Summer Season is over the activity at the Opera House continues to grow and they will present new and interesting concerts.
Again if you are new in Damascus and are yearning to hear some fantastic music you must make your way to the Damascus Opera complex and take in the great sounds presented week after week!

It is really nice that the concerts; plays; recitals; performances and solo artist are still performing at the Damascus Opera House.
The venue for this particular play was in the large Opera House and it was almost completely sold out, meaning over 2,000 patrons!
This play was well presented and staged with an emphasis in Choral Music. It had an old Syrian Theme of two adjacent villages competing for water and authority. It was completely in Arabic, but one could understand the main concept and go from there…The acting and music was quite good.
It is amazing that the Damascus Opera House complex still remains the only place for students to practice and people to enjoy great music both classical and contemporary!
