カイロはピラミッドばかりに目が行くが、歴史が古い町だけにオールドカイロなどの建物も素晴らしいものが多く点在する。このモスクも内部の装飾が素晴らしく、見所の一つだろう。

That not so large Mosque as it is the Mohamed Ali Pasha Mosque within the walls of the Citadel,
is located to a gardens in a cramped corner of the Citadel. It is much older than the Mohamed Ali Pasha Mosque, in fact it was the first mosque, built by the Ottoman rulers, way back in 1528.
If You look more attentively, You may see, that its design is fully Ottoman, but one exception, and that is, that entrance leads directly into the prayer hall, not a courtyard. The reason for that, is the little space here.
The decorations are quite something here, among the finest of any mosque of Cairo.
For instance, the mihrab is covered with marble, and that telling us about the influence of preceding Mameluke dynasty. Also ceiling of cupole is beautifully painted and coloured, full of characteric islamic ornaments.

This mosque is still under restoration, and as such you'll need to find a caretaker nearby to open it and show you around. A small tip (e.g. 10 egyptian pounds, depending on your experience) should be given in thanks, of course.
It's worth it, however. While much smaller than the Mohammed Ali Mosque which everyone visits, this mosque is much older and comes from the classical period of Ottoman architecture. The domes and half-domes inside are painted in colourful patterns and the lower walls are panelled with marble and a calligraphic frieze. From the small courtyard you can also access (assuming the caretaker unlocks it) the mausoleum where several high-ranking Ottoman officials were buried, their graves marked by beautiful tombstones of inlaid marble (which you probably won't see anywhere else in Cairo).
If you're at the Citadel, this is definitely worth the small detour; it will give you a good example of a different style of mosque from the other two you're likely to visit.
You can find the mosque by walking north beyond the military museum (follow the inconspicuous road to the right as you pass through the stone gate leading to the northern part of the Citadel where the military museum is located). Look for the small pencil-style (Ottoman) minaret.
