Animal torture! Horrible conditions for all the animals exept for the pandas. We were not surprised, the Chinese have a horrible way of treating animals (and people).

Leuk om de panda’s in het echt te zien. Voldoende ruimte.

Do I have to give this place anything? What a horrible place for the animals. The bear was in a pit and had trash all around it. It was so sad. The pandas had rusty old toys to climb on. Nothing about this place resembled any zoo I’ve been. The animals look sad. They need to modernize the zoo and catch up to 2022!

This is a terrible zoo - CRUEL.
DO NOT GO HERE PLEASE!!!!!
Huahua a baby elephant has been here in isolation since his birth and is in great distress.
Some zoos are great but not this one.
If you want to see Pandas and a great zoo go to San Diego - Great Zoo, Great City.

Verschrikkelijk triest.

This zoo wasn’t what I thought it would be. The animals seemed like they were in distress and dirty. It was also very overcrowded. I didn’t enjoy the experience so I went to other places instead of staying throughout the duration of my ticket.

I walked out disturbed after about 20 Mins. Animals kept in tanks and cages that didn't even allow them enough space to turn around. I'm no expert but it was clear to me the large cats were extremely distressed, pacing back and forth in dirty concrete cells. Bears in a concrete pit that the locals poured coke into their mouths much to their amusement. Snake aquariums where the snakes were either dead or hybinating and the mice that had been put in to feed them had resorted to eating each other. Shame on you China.

When I think about a zoo, I don't set myself up to feel sorry for the animals being confined even in small spaces. I don't go in ready to be outraged. I go in with the understanding that it's a frickin' zoo. Space will be limited and perhaps animal care won't be all the way up to par. And while that isn't "right" per se, it's just reality.
That said, I've been to many-a-zoo in my time and nothing has affected me more than when I visited the Beijing zoo. My problem has to do more with the zoo catering to the human experience more so than the animals in an absolutely over-the-top and absurd way.
The zoo itself is a beautiful park that spans over 200 acres and not only has statues and animal displays everywhere occupying the space, but also a designated garden, a river-like waterway where you can literally pay someone to "river" you around the zoo and an aquarium. The zoo itself was CLEAN. Sparkling clean. We even saw some personnel wiping up a spot (presumably bird poop) off the ground with the patience a thousand bodhisattvas. Surely, the animals must be well taken care of in this type of environment... or so I thought.
What was jarring to me was that with all of this space and attention to detail, the animals were blatantly left on the back burner. Some of them were pacing in circles in closet-like enclosures filled with dirt and sand. We saw animals just wasting away in their feces in their tiny compartments. And what I didn't really understand was that some animals (in particular, some of the small bear variety--not the pandas) had more space than they knew what to do with while some were cramped up in tiny enclosures with other animals for no other reason I guess outside of them lacking significance or importance. As someone else mentioned, some animals had to stay inside because of the cold....BUT even so, their confinement areas weren't kept tidy or wasn't spacious.
What really struck a nerve with me was seeing the African elephant in a cage it barely fit in...just to keep it out of the cold...surely, with all the money they put into statues, monuments and displays they could have made these confinements bigger for these animals.
It just seems like the Chinese government spent more money and attention making this a great "park" experience for Chinese visitors versus considering the conditions of the animals.
What's more, we had a security guard follow us around the park for an extended period (likely because we're foreigners). Being followed because I'm different is something I've experienced before so I wasn't particularly moved by this. But what really made me upset was that several Chinese visitors were teasing and taunting the animals to get a rise out of them -- apparently that's against park rules and several blind eyes were turned. I often wonder what would have happened to me if I did that.
Hypotheticals aside, I am highly disappointed in my experience. This zoo is simply backwards. It has the space, it has the money, it has the visitors but it has no respect for the animals and are willing to compromise the animals' wellness just to seem grandiose in the eyes of visitors.
I don't recommend that you waste your time or money visiting.

Hi everyone,
Planning a trip late Dec/ early Jan, and unfortunately won't make it to Chengdu.
Would it be worthwhile visiting the Panda House as we would really like to see the pandas.
Moreover what is the recommended time of day to visit and what are the entry fees?

We were in Beijing in September and I had been looking forward to the zoo visit with very high expectations- I should’ve done some research!! I was so disappointed with the whole visit - in fact the pandas are the pinnacle of the zoo and the two that we saw were Hot sad and unmoved. The rest of the zoo was even worse - as far as the animals go. However the gardens and public walkways were lush and clean, reasonably well laid out. I wouldn’t recommend it.

What is the best time in the morning to visit the pandas.

We traveled as a group so I am unsure of the individual cost. I am not aware of other China zoos that have great Pandas. I believe it is open all days but would recommend checking by telephone or internet if have far to travel.

Do you get to physically interact with the pandas or just look at them in their enclosures?

There is another panda zoo where you can pet baby pandas. we wanted to go there, but it's got an additional cost and we found it to be expensive. so we skipped that settled to just viewing the pandas from enclosures.
I'm searching for the name of the zoo & rate. Will post if I find. But you can find that here in trip advisor.

Why do foreign tourists continue to visit Chinese zoos?
They are disgraceful given the amount of knowledge there is these days about animal welfare and accommodation needs.
Performing animals are the norm - elephants, tigers/lions, dogs etc.
they are more about entertainment and profit than animal research and preservation.
Panda's in captivity can no longer breed naturally as they are so divorced from nature (and constantly handled by people), they no longer behave like animals.
Shame shame shame on all zoos in China.

We went there with our sons to see tbe pandas and animals we cannot see in Australia. After looking up zoos we did not want to go to where animals appeared doped and thought this zoo looked well kept. Our zoos look are very concerned about the animals so we were very shocked at this zoo. One son left the elephant enclosure in tears.

I would avoid all zoo's in China.
After visiting one, I was horrified by what I saw - the disgraceful treatment of the animals by staff and visitors.
