I had a couple of hours between meetings and was in the area, so I popped in this museum not knowing what to expect other than some of the repatriated bronze fountain heads from the Old Summer Palace. It is located in an office building, but it is exquisite. The collection is mostly of bronze pieces from 3,000 years ago. There is also a smaller side gallery with some beautiful religious stone sculptures. If you have the time, this museum is definitely worth a visit.

It is small and on the 9th floor of an office museum. The exhibit is mostly of "pots" but it is lovely to see such relics coupled with some lovely Buddhist statues. For most people only make the effort if you are in the area.

This is a treasure house of buddhist sculptures and bronze. From what I understand, most of the pieces have been derived from auctions. They represent the best of the genres. There are about a dozen buddhist sculptures, most of the Qingzhou style, the most appealing style of Chinese buddhist sculptures. There is a large variety of bronze vessels. The only museum which can match this museum in bronze is the Shanghai museum of art. This is a small museum. If you do not think you are interested in these two items, you should avoid. it.

This collection is quite small but nevertheless it is exceptional. The plan is well-laid out in a grid so that you can really see things well. The museum itself does not seem to have a lot of traffic and in Beijing this is a real plus!
You might plan for about an hour here. Skip the gift shop unless you're keen to pay 600RMB for an original t-shirt.

While the main draws for many are four of the looted zodiac heads from the Summer Palace, a dark symbol of Western imperialism in a China, the museum also has a well-curated collection of Bronze Age items.
The museum takes up a floor in a large office building. You have to take the elevator up to the museum. Unlike many other museums in China, this one is fairly quiet. I would block about 1-1.5 hours for the visit.

Definitely worth a visit. We went on a Saturday, and since the museum is in a commercial building, parking was easy and the building was quiet. It is in the New Poly Building on the southwest corner of the East Second Ring Road and Dongsishitiao. Right next to Dongsishitiao subway station too. Buy ticket on the ground floor (20 kuai each for us) and take the elevator to the ninth floor. The focus is Shang Dynasty bronzes, and it seems to me to be an excellent collection. Part of the museum is dedicated to stone Buddha statues - probably high-quality also but of less interest to me personally.

Located on the 9th floor of the impressive Poly Plaza building, this museum is on the small side but has an outstanding collection of artefacts.
The ancient bronze art works are delightful. They range from the Shang Dynasty beginning 1600 BCE to the Tang era, extending to about 900 CE.
Exquisite decorative features are to be seen on numerous food and wine vessels. Zun vessels in the shape of animals are charming, one as a rabbit and a phoenix particularly so. Ding, vessels standing on legs, are well represented.
A grand set of graduated bells musical instruments are to be seen. We imagined what it must have been like listening to their ringing.
The Buddhist art collection is quite interesting with some fine sculptures on display.

It's directly accessible from exit D of the Dongsi Shitiao metro station on line 2. Purchase your tickets from the concierges desk in main lobby. The museum is on the 9th floor of the New Poly Plaza. All items are beautifully arranged, behind glass with a direct spotlight, with simple English names but there's no further English text about the details. I wasn't offered an audio, but on the name plates of the displayed pieces, there was a headset symbol. It's a compact museum specifically focused on recovered relics from overseas. The main showcase is the 4 zodiac fountainheads (pig, monkey, tiger, and ox) that were ransacked from the Old Summer Palace in 1860. This gives interest to going to the Old Summer Palace. If you are interested in seeing the 3 other recovered fountainheads: rat and rabbit are housed in the National Museum, and the horse is housed in the Capital Museum. Next door to the Poly building is the Nanxincang Culture and Leisure Street. It's worth a stroll.
