If you find the monument you can find anything else in the area. This beacon got me to my hotel, found me coffee in the morning, and ultimately pointed me towards the cableway.

When built in 1950 this was the tallest structure in the city, now it is dwarfed by skyscrapers and mega malls. Still surrounded by thousands of poinsettias it is a testament to the feelings that still run deep regarding the Japanese nation and the atrocities they instigated in China over the last century or so. However it is just a monument, you can't climb it or even touch it so just take a selfie and carry on!

The monument itself is a side attraction to the square but is hard to miss if you are in the area. The monument is pretty central to many nice attractions and architechture. Worth making a trip to Jiefangbei Square.

If you can handle spicy food, there are tons of stalls in this area. They have a lot of authentic Chongqing/Sichuan cuisine that you can try for very cheap. Most things are $2-4 each and sharable. Just go to the stalls with people lining up, and you won't go wrong. The only thing is, most things are spicy, so if you can't handle spicy food, I would not recommend it.

The monument was very old and badly maintained. It was surrounded by character less shopping malls like everywhere else. There were a lot of restaurants nearby but not a place to enjoy coffee. Don’t wast your time here.

According to my guide, this monument used to be the benchmark (limit) for the height of buildings and structures in Chongqing. It is located in the middle of the CBD, so you can't miss it.
Tip: Do not visit on a rainy or drizzly day, like I did. I managed but it could have been a lot pleasanter.

This is the 1st time I have been to the Jiefang Monument after 7 years. It is a monument to commemorate Chinese victory in World War 2. When I was there in 2013, it looked old and run down, surrounded by skyscrapers (even though it used to be the tallest decades earlier). When I was there in 2019, it looked better maintained. There is even a garden surrounding the monument with bright yellow flowers amid nice greenery. It seems that with nationalism on the rise in China under the current leader Xi, more emphasis is placed on nationalistic monuments. This is a blessing as historical monuments are better maintained with a fresh breadth of life.

如今的解放碑周围高楼林立，它已经不是最高的那一个了，可是当我们了解过这一段历史，站到这里，还是会觉得震撼。是所以，感受重庆在那个时候的勇敢，还是可以来看看。
