San Wai (also called Kun Lung Wai) is a historic walled village and stop 11 along the Lung Yeuk Tau Heritage Trail in Fanling. It is located between the Shin Shut Study Hall (stop 10) and Siu Hang Tsuen (stop 12) if you are starting this self-guided walk from the south. What you see today are two Declared Monuments, the restored and intact outer wall and gate entrance (1988) as well as the four corner watchtowers of the village (1993).
Historically, the walled village of San Wai dates back several centuries. It is one of a handful of similar settlements by the Tang Clan in the area and is very interesting to view from the outside. The wall is of grey and black brick while the entrance tower was made of granite and includes a stone lintel above the entrance that dates back to 1744. These were restored in 1994. The defensive wall additionally features four restored corner watchtowers (1995) that that are really nice to see. It seems there was a moat that surrounded the village in the distant past as well. That has long been filled in.
Within the villages, households were laid out on a centre axis with a communal shrine located at the end of the main alley. Like the other Tang Clan walled villages, most of the old homes have been replaced now with modern buildings.
Note: There is an information panel just outside the gated entrance to San Wai which provides historical account and details regarding the Declared Monuments to be seen here. This is worth a few minutes to review as part of your visit. There is further information on display in the Rear Hall of the Tang Chung Ling Ancestral Hall (stop 6) along with panels for each of the other historical attractions you can see along the heritage trail.
Have a good look at the impressive wall, watchtowers and gated entrance at San Wai and then continue onward to the last stop on the trail, Siu Hang Tsuen (stop 12), just a few minutes north of here.

One of the historical properties that you can view as part of the Lung Yeuk Ta Heritage Trail in Fanling is the Sin Shut Study Hall building near the walled village of San Wai.
This attraction is located on the north side of Sha Tau Kok Road and a bit difficult to find due to the lack of proper signage and English in this area. The Sin Shut Study Hall is located almost directly in between the road and San Wai. Best to view the location on the trail maps, which you can download online before setting out. See note below.
Here you will see a traditional study hall building erected in 1840 that has a long history of being used for ancestral worship and educating local village children. Presently, the Sin Shut Study Hall is private property so you can only view from the outside.
In the end, the Sin Shut Study Hall is an important heritage building that should be preserved and protected. It is worth a quick viewing if you intend to walk the full Lung Yeuk Ta Heritage Trail. Then make your way onward to San Wai, which is a similar but much larger and better overall attraction to see.

San Wai is a historic village in Fanling and makes up part of the Lung Yeuk Tau Heritage Trail. This is the second stop on the self-guided tour if starting at Siu Hang Tsuen or the next to last stop if you are starting at Tsung Kyam church at the opposite end of the trail.
The village was built around 1744 and includes a fully intact wall with four towers.This is the most interesting aspect of this attraction. You can walk around much of the village taking in the unobstructed views of the exterior walls and towers.
There is a marked entrance into the village with a small tower and Chinese signage. Within the entrance gate is a small shrine. Inside you will mostly newer properties which have placed the old houses from the distant past. There is an old temple you can see on the opposite side of the village from the entrance. It is worth a quick look if interested.
In the end, San Wai is a good stop to see the exterior walls and towers. Allow 10 minutes to enjoy before making your way to the next stop on the Lung Yeuk Tau Heritage Trail.
