‪Conic Island - one of HK's hidden gems‬

‪There are very few signs to guide you. Took advice of few locals, got horribly lost. I followed shoreline and reached a semblance of a path to get out. Avoid this place until there are better signages.‬

‪Sai Kung East Country Park is what most think about when describing Wild Hong Kong! This is where you find much of the most dramatic landscapes and beautiful beaches in the territory. One place within the country park that is fairly unknown and rarely mentioned in tourist information yet has breathtaking scenery is Conic Island.

This is a tiny uninhabited island just offshore of a wild peninsula that you can hike north and northeast of Long Ke Wan, one of the popular beaches that dot the coastline. The island is quite small but neatly rises around 50 metres out of the sea in the shape of a round cone. It is made up of the hexagonal volcanic columns that have been weathered into this shape over time.

You can't visit the island directly but can see it from up close at the end of the equally beautiful carved end of peninsula, which is also formed of the same rare volcanic columns that, due to an endless battle with the sea, extend outward like a series of fingers trying to grab Conic Island. There are up close cliffs of exposed volcanic columns, partial sea caves and loads of rugged coastline being bashed by the rough seas that you can enjoy seeing while here.

To visit Conic Island start from the High Island Reservoir - East Dam, you will walk the MacLehose Trail until you reach the end of Long Ke Wan Beach. From here you take the grey trails for around 60-75 minutes until you reach Conic Island.

Do research the unofficial (grey) trails and make us of mobile apps like Hiking Trail HK. There are virtually no trees in this area so you can't get lost. But still easier if you are a map to help guide the way. Along the way you will pass one challenging section just before the small secondary beach north of Long Ke Wan. A bit of scrambling and making use of a rope to assist up a hillside is required.

Other than that, just scrubby pathways to follow, use hiking trousers to avoid scratching up your bare legs. Again, no trees so no shade or protection from the sun. As such, do pay attention to the weather and be ready with proper gear (hat, plenty of sunscreen and rain jacket if expecting rain). Similarly, there are public toilets at the reservoir drop off as well as at Long Ke Wan. However, there are no beach cafes or places to buy additional water or snacks out here. Do come prepared with adequate supplies for the day before considering this particular hike.

Allow around 1.5-2 hours to hike to Conic Island from High Island Reservoir - East Dam one way, depending on your hiking fitness and experience. If you plan to go more leisurely, stick around Long Ke Wan or exploring the peninsula around Conic Island, you can easily end up spending 6-8 hours doing this hike and back.‬

‪The Sai Kung East Country Park is home of some of Hong Kong's wildest and most beautiful scenery. It is remote, takes time access and explore as well as some basic navigation skills as you can find yourself in areas with poor or no mobile service and few if any facilities.

One of the less publicised but excellent day hikes in Sai Kung East is the Tai Long Wan Hiking Trail which starts at the Sai Wan Pavilion and makes way to the coast at Tai Long Wan, a wide bay around 3 km in distance. Along the trail, hikers, campers and beach day-trippers can explore and enjoy four beaches with fine beautiful sand and beautiful blue waters. The area is stunningly beautiful, photogenic and feels like you have found yourself somewhere in Thailand or the Philippines instead of Hong Kong.

These beaches are reached along the trail in the following order: (1) Sai Wan Beach, (2) Ham Tin Beach, (3) Tai Wan Beach and (4) Tung Wan Beach. The first two beaches have basic facilities including public toilets, stores and a couple of eateries each. If you plan to visit each, make sure to top up your water and purchase drinks at Ham Tin Beach before proceeding as this is the last place to do so as you continue up the coast.

Trail Note: The trail turns west at Ham Tin Beach. However, you can continue hiking up the coast in order to see the 3rd and 4th beaches, Tai Wan and Tung Wan, which are more secluded, experience fewer visitors but are just as beautiful. You can then return back to Ham Tin Beach and turn west, hiking across the Country Park to Pak Tam Au, where you can take public bus or call a taxi to return back to Sai Kung town centre. If you want to complete the trail point-to-point including all four beaches, you'll cover around 12 km in distance from Sai Wan Pavilion to Pak Tam Au. The first 7 km are coastal with low elevation, a lot of easy hiking here. The back 5 km include to ascends of 140 metres and equal descends.

Trail Note: If you want to spend quality time at any of the beaches, instead of completing the hike all the way to Pak Tam Au, what many people do is simply finish hiking at Ham Tin Beach and arrange speedboat transport back to the Sai Kung Pier from there. This is a 30 minute journey that passes some of the most impressive features of the UNESCO Geo Park, passing incredible cliffs made up of tall stacks of hexagonal volcanic columns (like the Giant's Causeway in Ireland) as well as popular islands visited from the piers at Sai Kung in route. The speedboats leave at regular one hour intervals and the cost is fixed at (HK$150 one-way, HK$250 round trip per person).‬

‪It is actually a beach camping experience. Sai wan ho beach is one of the famous camping spot among the East Park beaches. We have to reach the Sai Wan Pavilion first and there the hike starts. I would rate this hike 7/10. Because it took us around 1hr to reach the beach with all the equipments and necessaries. or you can take a boat from sai kung. Sai Wan ho is a nice remote village which is by the Sai wan beach. The beach has 2 sites, one is the beach the other one is the camping site which is also has another beach. You can choose either side to stay. Goods are quite expensive in the village. sobetter go prepared. We camped there for one night and woke up for a beautiful sunrise over the horizon. Village has all the restaurants, and toiletry facilities. ‬

‪This is a very beautiful area that extends over 3000 hectares and includes stretches of the MacLehose Hiking Trail, the beautiful and remote Tai Long Wan beaches, the East Dam and High Island Reservoir, the unique UNESCO Global Geopark and rugged mountains like Sharp Peak.
It's quite special but it is too far away for most visitors to include on a short itinerary and in any case, it will mostly interest people who enjoy hiking and exploring more remote and wilder natural areas.
The most well known and popular hike is the 100 km long MacLehose Trail, which is broken into 12 stages. Stages 1 & 2 run through the park. Of the two, Stage 2 is the most scenic and is the one that many people recommend. Stage 1 is relatively easy but it’s mainly along the roadside and therefore not as appealing. Most people prefer to skip Stage 1 and take a taxi through the country park to the start of Stage 2.
The challenging (scary) Sharp Peak trail is for for experienced and hardy hikers.
Entry to the park is free.
GETTING HERE: It can be a trek if you are coming from Central by public transport and you’ll need to catch trains and a bus. A taxi cost us about $270HKD (which is much the same as an uber) and is worth considering especially if there is a group of you. Public transport stops at the country park gates and private cars are not allowed inside either so once here, your only option is to walk in or catch a taxi to a particular point in the park. Make sure you come prepared for the day as there are only a few, basic opportunities to buy things so water, hat, sunscreen and snacks are essentials.‬

‪This is one of Hong Kong's wild country havens and the location of some of the territories most rewarding hiking opportunities. The Sai Kung East Country Park is nearly 45 sq. km of country park that was designated in 1978. It butts up against the sea to the east and the Sai Kung West Country Park to the west.

The Sai Kung East Country Park is probably best known for the world famous MacLehose Trail, one of National Geographic's 20 World Dream Trails. The first two stages of this 100-km trail pass through Sai Kung East. However, it is also the location of some of the very best of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, including less known but impressive Po Pin Chau Trail (also called the Pak Lap Wan Loop Trail) and the family-friendly High Island Geo Trail, which allows hikers up close access and experiences with the rare Hexagonal Volcanic Columns known as Organ Pipes. This area of Hong Kong has giant stacks of Organ Pipes that form entire islands like Po Pin Chau and long stretches of cliffy escarpments which you can view from the Pak Lap Wan Loop Trail.

The better known trails like the MacLehose Stage 1 (along the southern shore and East Dam of the High Island Reservoir and Stage 2 which skirts the wild countryside and rugged mountains of eastern shore are very popular for their isolated beaches with turquoise water and beautiful views. These section trails are quite heavily beaten on weekends and public holidays but can be very quiet on weekdays.

Wild camping is possible at various locations in the country park. There are dedicated campsites as well but you need to do your research in advance. The dedicated campsites are presently closed due to the pandemic and transportation into and out of the country park can be limited. Taxi is the main way to enter the area along with limited mini-bus service; including 9A which runs to/from East Dam on Sundays and Public Holidays and 94 which runs throughout the week calling on stops along Pak Tam Road, which serves as the boundary between Sai Kung East and West Country Parks.

Note: There is very almost access to food or drinks within the country park beyond a couple of casual beach cafes found at the isolated village beaches along a few of the trails. As such, it is important to pack accordingly with adequate food and drinks prior to entering the park. Public toilet facilities are available but at strategic locations.

In the end, Sai Kung East Country Park is a great place to experience the wild side of Hong Kong that is drastically different to the busy streets found throughout the commercial and residential areas of the city. It is a really good retreat for those wanting to spend a day reconnecting with nature.‬

‪I have resided on and off for 35 years in HK. I had always been close to visiting but never had until last week. Hyped up locations are a pain to realise but this place is beyond all the hype. Its a location that compares to any and I have been fortunate to see many around our beautiful planet.‬

‪This park is absolutely stunning. It has many options of beaches and pathways, all of it will take your breath away. Pak Lap is hidden in this park as well and promises the most delicious food. Well worth a visit! ‬
