The Tat Tak Communal Hall is stop 14 and the final attraction along the Ping Shan Heritage Trail. It is located just off Tsui Sing Road, past the Tin Shui Wai MTR and Light Rail Stations, around 2-3 minutes walk from the Tsui Sing Lau Pagoda (stop 13).
Opening hours are usually 9am to 1pm and 2-5pm daily (closed Tuesdays). However, as of April 2021, this attraction remains closed for restoration work. As such, you can only view it from the main road, which during our Oct 2021 visit was obstructed from very high grass and vegetation growth. However, if you enter the car park just past the entrance, you can still have a fair look at the exterior of the Tat Tak Communal Hall behind the fence.
Historically, this building was constructed in 1857 for the purpose of communal functions such as the management of the nearby Ping Shan marketplace and assembly for members of the Tat Tak Alliance. It importantly includes a hall of bravery, which commemorates the many villagers that died during armed resistance to British takeover of the New Territories in 1899.
Architecturally, the Tat Tak Communal Hall is similar to other study hall and temple attractions seen along the Ping Shan Trail. It features a two-hall, three bay structure and grey brick exterior with murals under the pitched roof amongst other traditional Chinese architectural elements common from the late Qing Dynasty period.
In the end, have a quick look at the Tat Tak Communal Hall through the fence if visiting anytime in the near future. Otherwise, in future years, hopefully this attraction will be reopened so that inside visitations can resume. Afterward, you will have finished your visit of the Ping Shan Heritage Trail and can return back to the MTR or Light Rail station and make your way back to the city.
