Not just the museum, but the guide was very helpful in explaining the paintings and the history of Basoeki Abdullah. At the end of the visit, I also got two hard-cover books about Basoeki Abdullah! They're going to expand this museum, so I bet it's going to get much better soon :)

Okay we received the free tickets from a Starbucks promotion, but as far as museums and history it was great! The descriptions are English and Bahasa, so one can understand the history. Many other museums in Jakarta are not as accessible. It is not large, but the new museum is due to open in November 2016. To see all the portraits of the leaders during his time was amazing who he had access too. (Some infamous and some famous leaders.)
I have a new quest where I can get a print or two to remember the visit.

Never knew Cilandak was ever famous for anything artsy, but tucked in a green alleyway of Cilandak residential area was a humble house used to be occupied by one of Indonesia's most well-known painters, Mr. Basoeki Abdullah, now turned into a museum intended to display some of his renowned works for people to admire or reminisce the past.
We visited the place on a fine Saturday morning and was greeted by our friendly and knowledgeable guide, Mr. Erwin. Currently, the museum consists of two floors which can be explored in 15 minutes or hours, depending on how interested you are with the paintings hanging on the second floor.
In the first floor, after being explained about his personal life, we were taken to the memorial room, which was his personal bedroom. Afterwards, we were taken to the room which displays the painter's collection of wayang kulit, wayang figurines, and masks from both Java and Bali. From the collection, it was clear to see that the painter had this profound fascination to wayang and human expression, which in fact led him into becoming a world-renowned painter of his age.
The main attraction of this museum is located on the 2nd floor. Two third of the paintings displayed on the second floor was portraits of famous people from all around the world. From those paintings, it was clear to see why he was the royal painter of the Thailand kingdom for 16 years. It's because he was able to capture people in an expression such that the person will still be recognizable, but looks much more attractive on the painting (essentially the art of today's photoshop skill :)).
All in all, the museum can be simply described as clean, well maintained, and educating. They plan to expand it by the end of the year so that more paintings can be displayed. It will be a pleasure to visit once the extension is open. In the mean time, if you happen to be an artist yourself, why not participating in their annual Basoeki Abdullah Art Award ;)
