‪Following the renovation of the lighthouse 1/2 years ago, it is not allowed to go up to the light anymore. Understandable from a conservatory aspect, but that would have been the highlight of the trip. Now it's just a trip to an island which happens to have a lighthouse on it. Sad really. The MPA staff did a good job in explaining SG's maritime history, but unfortunately the same thing gets replicated over and over - first in the maritime gallery, again on the ferry and again on the lighthouse (and on the ferry back). At some point in time it would be good if there simply is less talking and more seeing.

Overall a bit disappointing, the highlight for me would have been to climb up, and have the lighthouse keepers explain everything but honestly, the lighthouse is fully automated so it makes me wonder why the lighthouse keepers are still there....‬

‪I visited this lighthouse on a Lighthouse trail during Singapore HeritageFest organised by the National Heritage Board a few years back

The lighthouse is located 23 km away on the southernmost island of Singapore, Pulau Satumu. The Raffles Lighthouse was completed in 1855. It was designed by John Bennett and the lighthouse was named after Sir Stamford Raffles, who founded modern Singapore.

It is the second-oldest of Singapore's five still in use. The oldest is Horsburgh Lighthouse on Pedra Branca, off the mainland's eastern shore built in 1851.

Our ferry also travelled past the Sultan Shoal Lighthouse built in 1896.

The two decommissioned lighthouses - Fullerton and Fort Canning - were retired as are now many buildings in their surrounding areas and the view of navigational light would be obstructed. The Fullerton Lighthouse is now located outside Harbourfront Tower 1 for us to enjoy a relic of Singapore’s past.‬

‪Wow and Super wow. Finally get to visit this elusive place which is not generally open to public. This place is not accessible to public unless you are invited guest or you are a staff member. The event started with a tour around Singapore Maritime Gallery. The boat ride from Marina South Pier takes approx. 1 hour to Raffles Lighthouse (southern tip of Singapore). Upon arrival, the lighthouse is so majestic and the surroundings so serene. Noise is almost unheard of. It’s just you and mother nature.

You will need to abled body to climb 107 steps to the top of the lighthouse. The view is magnificent! However no pictures are allowed of the defence aerial towers (Vessel Traffic Information System or VTIS) and no usage of selfie stick at the top. The guides and MPA staff are welcome and friendly. Good coordination, and ferry ride smooth and safe.

MPA should really try to do this often. As Singaporeans, we are so naive that our waterways will not be safe if not for these lighthouses and dedicated men/women who stay apart from the families just to ensure safe sea passage way. Kudos to you. Thank you MPA for organising this.‬
