I did this one day trek in May 2019. I was with a group of 8 people ranging from age late fifties to myself at 72. All of us were part of a larger group on a two week tour of Peru. Prior to this day our local guides put us through our paces to ensure we were capable of completing this day. Once started..there is no way out but to finish.
We were a slow group and therefore one of the last on the trail however this ended up a bonus as when we arrived at the gate overlooking Machu Pichu, we overlooked an empty site which our guide said was very special. We stopped for the iconic photos then hot footed it down to catch the last bus.
We had a porter to carry our refreshments up to the lunch stop and also to carry the trash back out. I would recommend this as carrying a light load wa what made this possible for me, I have never been fit in my life however I did workout with a personal trainer, started hiking up and down our local hills and exercised five times a week for months before leaving for Peru.
Going to Peru was a bucket list item, but doing one day of the Inca Trail seemed out of reach...but I did it. It is an arduous trek but worth every once of energy.

We got there with the Salcantay trail.
We woke up at 04:15' left the hostel at 04:50, got to the gate at 05:10.
They first let the 06:00 tickets (we had 07:00 tickets). At 05:30 we left the gate and started the way to the top. 1762 stars took us 1 hour.
When you inside, go first to the sun gate and then to the Inka bridge and then to the city. Once you in the city, it's only one way.

If there is anything on the list of things to do in life - that you seriously have to do - then this is it! This is amazing and beautiful and awesome and whatever else words you can think of ! But - for me it was a seriously spiritual experience - it touched my heart! Thanks to Fredy our guide who made all of this perfect!

Our first visit to Macchu Picchu was with a small group & guide. Our tickets were scheduled from 1pm. My daughters ticket had her old passport details, we had no problems entering the citadel as I brought along her old passport. Our guide took us to some amazing viewing areas not too busy with other travellers. The weather was just perfect. I would advise you wear comfortable clothing, sturdy footwear, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, waterproof jacket just in case.
Our 2nd visit was at 6am the following day, it was cloudy & raining. The mountains were covered in cloud!! We waited an 1.5hrs for a break in the cloud. There were a few glimpses of the ruins but nothing like the day before. No umbrellas are allowed. Plastic ponchos are sold at the gates. Beware steps & rocks are slippery. Also there is a bag storage at the entrance for backpacks etc.
Finally our 3rd visit was at 1pm, the rain had stopped and the sun was shining with a few whispers of cloud. Yet another perfect photo opportunity.
Remember to stamp your passport on exit with a Machu Picchu stamp.
This was an experience that all age groups were participating in.

We decided to get the bus up to the entrance and save a couple of hours walking. The bus ride is an entertainment in itself. Don’t look down if you’re not good on heights. The entrance to the site was a bit chaotic but once we were in, it is a slow and steady climb to see the various parts of the site. Our guide was good and explained the different parts. The scenery is stunning, the. Work in building the area is absolutely amazing. The return buses (into town) were well organised. A brilliant visit.

We were taken on a half a day tour. The ancient ruins are surrounded by breathtaking scenery. Walking around made one wonder how the vast city was built with such precise stone work. We were able to walk around all day and also encounter some free roaming Llaama and Llaama babies. we also took tablets to prevent altitude sickness and insect repellent to keep off mosquitoes. There were not too many mosquitoes near the ruins but if you venture near the vegetation, the spray will help.Words are not enough to describe this place, the grandeur must be felt in person.

We are a group of 5 women. We are staying in Agua Calientes and hiking to the entrance of Machu Pichu (not taking the bus). We understand it's about an hour to an hour and a half hike. My question is do we need/would it be helpful to have a guide for the short hike? Are there sites to see along the way? Where would you suggest we find a guide for this and for Machu Pichu itself?
Thanks for any responses!!

The hike is well marked - so no guide needed. However, the Machu Pichu itself I found the guide had lots of extra knowledge that was great. I used Fredy Palva 084233457/084607950from Agotur -Cusco

Once you arrive on the bus, is there a lot of walking/ steps with no railings? Are there several tours some easy, some more difficult? What are amenities/ bathrooms, etc??

No - there are always some sort of railing on one side. Yes - there are different walks that you can take once you are there. Good bathrooms at the start and sort of halfway.
