We arrived in Panama City by ship. We were met at the port by Maty. Once we started using What’s App we found each other quickly and were soon on the way to the old Panama Canal locks.
Maty timed our visit so we would see a large cargo ship in the locks. We not only saw that one but two others as they maneuvered through the locks. Maty was extremely knowledgeable about the history and operation of the canal and locks. He answered all of our questions.
We had time for a coffee in the visitor center before seeing the IMAX movie narrated by Morgan Freeman. While we were slightly reluctant we thoroughly enjoyed the movie and the information we learned from it.
Maty then took us to Old Town Panama where we wandered throughout the city visiting shops, churches and other historic sites. The biggest highlight was the arch which had survived numerous major earthquakes and convinced the canal builders that they could succeed despite all the obstacles. We ended our day having a scrumptious lunch which included typical Panamanian delights.
Maty then returned us to the ship.
We would highly recommend this excursion from Barefoot Panama. It’s a great way to learn about the city, its history, and the canal.
Maty was the perfect guide. He was personable, knowledgeable, and attuned to our needs in organizing the day.
By the way prior to arrival I had several conversations with Kevin O’Brien the company’s owner. I found him to be helpful and responsive to all of my questions and requests.
You can not go wrong booking a tour with this company.

We had a private tour. This company is very dependable and excellent. The guide was very knowledgeable. There is no doubt we would use them again.

Our tour guide was exceptional. Unfortunately, I'm not remembering his name, otherwise I'd mention it here. He really knew lots about the history of Panama and the Panama Canal and was very energetic and lively. He succeeded in accommodating our needs and making sure we had a comfortable and fun experience. Not only did we see monkeys on the monkey island tour, but we'd also gotten to see a sloth! During the community tour, it was clear how much the indigenous community loved and trusted him to bring tourists into their yard. Would definitely recommend!

The trip was amazing! The guide had so much knowledge and information/history to share. Seeing the monkeys (along with sloths, toucans, lizards, and even a crocodile were highlights). Was also fun to be right on the lake with ships going through the canal. Truly enjoyed the visit to the Indian village and learning about the use of products from the rainforest.

A rainy day, but a very nice tour. Our guide was wonderful. He was so knowledgeable and personal. We did the Canal - Panama City tour. It was low season so it was a private tour, so he took us places of our interests. Our lunch stop was a fabulous local restaurant.

This was a great tour, and we had an amazing guide, Gonzo! He's such a good story teller who enjoys what he does. He's very knowledgeable and made the history of the Panama Canal super interesting. The monkeys are so fun! And the boat operator was fantastic at spotting different animals. It was also so striking to be close to the huge cargo ships going through the canal. When I booked the tour, I was a bit wary of what the visit to the indigenous village would be like, but it was completely respectful of them and very informative. Highly recommend this tour!

We took this on the day we landed in Panama. It was a good tour through Casco Viejo and we definitely tried things we wouldn’t have without this tour, especially the seafood market. Our guide was great and really knowledgeable.

I am writing for all who may have been like me- everyone I know said I must go to the canal but I wasn't that excited. Well let me tell you it is a must see! I came away in awe of the engineering, history, and visuals. No way you can go to Panama and miss this!

WE SO ENJOYED THE BOAT RIDE ON THE CANAL. WE RODE RIGHT BESIDE HUGE TANKERS! OUR GUIDES WERE VERY PERSISTENT IN FINDING THE MONKEYS. WE EVEN HAD THEM CRAWLING ON THE BOAT EDGE! GREAT PHOTO OPP.
WE ALSO REALLY LIKED THE SMALLER INDIAN VILLAGE. IT DIDN'T FEEL SO TOURISTY. OUR GUIDE HAD A LONG TERM RELATIONSHIP WITH THEM AND THEREFORE GAVE US A GREAT EXPLANATION OF THEIR HISTORY AND CURRENT SITUATION.
WE ALSO REALLY LIKED THE SMALLER INDIAN VILLAGE. IT DIDN'T FEEL SO TOURISTY. OUR GUIDE HAD A LONG TERM RELATIONSHIP WITH THEM AND THEREFORE GAVE US A GREAT EXPLANATION OF THEIR HISTORY AND CURRENT SITUATION.

I booked a trip last night with Barefoot Panama for the monkey tour, Tuesday April 10th.
This morning Kevin emailed me (I asked that he call me) saying that it was cancelled. I have not been able to get ahold of anyone to find out what is going on or why it has been canceled. If somebody (preferably Kevin) could please call me, I would really appreciate it seeing as I just paid a cab driver $200 to take both me and my friend into the city for the tour which is a three-hour drive from where we are staying.

no, it does not . . it starts / ends on the amador causeway (1 of 2 marinas depending on the day..)

it depends . . for some tours, 100% must be paid before the tour. . not necessarily at the time of booking . . but usually a week before the tour date . . for some, we can take a deposit and the rest can be paid cash upon pick up

The transport is $100 each way from Royal D to the city . . the main challenge is the traffic (#4 worst in the world) so, you would need to do a tour on a a sat/sun (March 4/5 or 11/12)
