We did not think it was worth paying the entrance fee of EUR 5 per person: the cloister may be charming but it is certainly not very beautiful.

Start the Citadel Walk from the entrance in front of the Proche Gate and the roof of the monastery approaches immediately below. It had a bell tower so it looked somewhat like a religious institution, but its simple stone structure and unadorned exterior made it look like part of a city wall. Incidentally, the bell tower is called St. Luke's Tower and is said to be one of the oldest fortified towers protecting Dubrovnik since the 13th century. It is said to have been integrated with the walls due to its strategic position near the port. There seems to be much to see in the monastery, including a huge Gothic cross, but there was no time to visit.

This is a beautiful building with a lovely peaceful courtyard, where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the old town for a break. We visited with the Dubrovnik pass and it only cost €4. The architecture is fantastic and there are a couple of small exhibits with items on show to view as well.

Entrance at 5€ we say to ourselves it's okay.
Except that the church is under renovation and the exhibition is quite limited.
Finally you only see the cloister, which is charming, but oh well.
15min visit and then they leave.

The Dominican Monastery (Croatian: Dominikanski samostan) is a religious complex from the 13th century which today houses a museum with works of art and artifacts, among other things. For those with a Dubrovnik Pass, admission costs "only" €4, otherwise it is significantly more expensive. It is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
If we had to choose between visiting the Dominican Monastery and the Franciscan Monastery, we would choose the Franciscan Monastery because we thought it was more beautiful and worth seeing.

Building began in the early 14th century and the monastery was constructed against the city wall to strengthen the walls' northeastern flank. It is located in the eastern part of the City, close to the inner Ploce gate where it merges with the City walls. Like so many buildings in the city, the monastery was extensively rebuilt after the earthquake of 1667.
An impressive stairway with a stone balustrade whose columns have been partly mortared in leads to the main entrance. My guidebook explained that the monks themselves carried out this ugly modification in response to loafers who stood at the bottom of the staircase in order to look at women’s bare ankles!
The staircase leads up the south church door, the work of Bonito of Milan and features a Romanesque statue of St. Dominic. One can then enter the single nave church, which unfortunately was closed for renovations during our visit.
We continued on to visit the Gothic cloister. The various rooms of the monastery are arranged around the cloister which was designed by the Florentine architect Maso di Bartolomeo and crafted by Croatian masons.
The graceful triple arches of the cloister surround a peaceful and beautiful Mediterranean garden. We enjoyed wondering around and just relaxing before we tackled our next site.
In the center of the cloister garden is a 14th-century well, which still works. During the 1991 war, several hours each morning were spent drawing water from this well. It is estimated to have provided water to 50 percent of the city’s bombarded population.
If you plan to walk the walls, snap a few pictures of the Dominican bell tower. It is a major landmark in the Old City and one can get some great shots from the wall. Building started in the 16th century and only completed two centuries later.
Take the time to visit the Dominican Museum which contains a great collection of works from the “Dubrovnik School”, the Republics response to the art bloom in Venice and Florence.
Don’t miss the triptych by Nikola Bozidarovic with St. Blaise holding a detailed model of 16th century Dubrovnik (left panel).
In one room there was a huge painting by Titian depicting St. Blaise, Mary Magalene, and the donor. Unfortunately, I could not get a decent picture due to the large tour group and I did not want to wait around until they left, but I did enjoy listening to their guide's comments.
Paintings, triptychs, silver church vessels, jewelry and a reliquary purportedly containing the skull of King Stephen I of Hungary are part of the museum’s rich collection.
Although there was an entrance fee, we were able to get a discount with our Dubrovnik City Pass.

The monastery and its rooms are fairly small, especially since the church portion was closed for renovations when we visited. However, the entrance fee was low (€3) and it was not crowded inside. We enjoyed the garden-like cloisters with their cool and quiet corridors, and were able to explore several rooms of off them with paintings, especially several of St. Blaise, the patron saint of Dubrovnik. We only stayed for about 30 minutes but enjoyed our visit.

This is a beautiful monastery but you have to pay extra if you have a Dubronik card. Beautiful paintings by old masters and a beautiful courtyard.

what days & times is Dominican Monastery open in August 2017?
كُتب بتاريخ 10 مايو 2017
I did not go inside the monastery last time I visited because I only got half a day so I was not aware of their opening hours. I checked on the net for you and apparently it is open from 9am to 6pm (5pm in the winter). I suppose august is not considered winter. But do try to check with your travel agent if any as I believe most of these attractions do not open everyday of the week and besides, it is prudent to check if they would be under any renovation around your time of visit. Wish you a good time in the old town. It is definitely worth a visit!

Dear Sir;
Is there a staff at the Dominican Monastery, or anyone around that knows any of the late 1800's early 1900's history of the monastery. Specifically, we are looking for information about a young boy who was taken in by the monks in a monastery in Dubrovnik and became a very capable translator for them around this aforementioned time period. He left around the age of 18 and came to America. My Grandson is his Great, Great Grandson and is looking for information about his Great, Great Grandfather. Any information that can be provided is greatly appreciated. We will be traveling to Dubrovnik in late June and would like to visit and tour the monastery where my Grandson's Great, Great Grandfather lived during the formative period of his life.

Hello,
There were staff there who might be able to answer some of your questions although I'm not sure how much they offer in terms of tours etc.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
