My plan was to enter the Walled city through Lahori gate, (one of the oldest of the 13 gates) meander through its streets and exit on the other side at Badshahi Mosque. Unfortunately, my plans were curtailed as the streets are very narrow and constantly plied by rickshaws and motorbikes traveling at speed and if they don’t get you, someone with a hand cart will. It was making me rather stressed.
However, I did thoroughly enjoy the hour I spent there. I drank some lovely hot tea and cakes and tried the deep fried ‘Puri’ bread with Dahl etc, which was delicious. The local people were so helpful and friendly and found me quite a curiosity. It really is like stepping back in time and not a place for those offended by the sight of birds crammed in tiny cages or animals being dissected.

The Lahori or Lohari gate is located in the south of the Walled City. Some say that it was named Lahori because it faced the Ichra or the original Hindu Lahore called Ichhra Lahore or Lohawar after the Hindu God. Others claim that it was named Lohari because of the blacksmiths or the "Lohars" had their smithies right outside this gate. This gate retains it's original majesty. After Mahmood Ghaznavi burnt Lahore to ashes he handed it over to Malik Ayaz, his governor. Ayaz started the rebuilding and repopulating of Lahore from this district and built this gate . This door is also historically significant because Ranjit Singh conspired with it's gatekeeper during his siege of the city and it was secretly opened for him to enter and invade Lahore. We saw the famous markets of this area like the Lohari Mandi Bazaar, Sutar Mandi Bazaar and Bukhari Bazaar. We also viewed the Bukhari Chowk which used to be the Courtesans's Square of the yesteryears. The famous Pakistani singer Mehdi Hasan was born and bred in Lohari Gate area. This area also had the Kucha Kharasian which housed the millers, who used to grind wheat, grams, corn and rice in hand and bullock mills to make flour. We visited some of the interesting buildings there like Mandir Nihal Chand, Dharamsala Sanathan and Katra Barkat Ali.The Mosque Imam Din, Muslim Masjid, Masjid Shah Din and the shrine of Pir Mubarik Ali Sahib were also located here. A famous building near this gate used to be the Baithak Katiban or the Calligraphy Center. Some of the best Lahori food shops are in this area like Shaikh Chatkhara House, Haji Nihari House, Mehar Bashir Halwae and Hafiz Channay and Kucha Kababian. The Nihari here was too good but very very spicy. Right in front of this gate is the largest Opticians' Market of Lahore, the Flower Market and the Anarkali Bazaar. The tomb of Qutb-Ud-Din Aibak, who was the first Muslim ruler of Subcontinent, is also in this Bazaar. Overall a visit to this gate was a wonderful experience.
