I've fallen in love with Big Brother Mouse association, with its curious and adorable students, its kind staff, and the special and great atmosphere of the place. You can go there to talk with students who want to improve their english level, and get to know them and their culture at the same time. It's the perfect way to give some of your time during your trip, to thank the Laotian community back for their kindness ! You can go there everyday on the morning (from 9 to 11am) and the evening (from 5 to 7pm).

Spending time at Big Brother Mouse is such a cool thing to do because it's so helpful and a truly reciprocal experience for all parties. Essentially, Big Brother Mouse which is right in town in LP, provides a meeting point fpr students and travellers so that the students can practice their English and travellers can learn a bit about local life. I spent a couple of hours here and learned such a lot from from the students and kids I got talking to. It was really fun and very congenial. You don't book, just arrive and you'll be matched up with someone to talk to. Stay as long as you like. Happens every evening between 5pm and 7pm. NIce work!

I was approached by 3 young men while cooling my heels at the night market. They explained they were students at Big Brother Mouse and asked if I would talk to them for awhile. We had a good chat for half an hour. I learned so much about them and their dreams of a better life. My wife joined us after her shopping.
All 3 were in high school and their English was pretty darn good already. In the course of conversation I was able to show them some new things. They were very polite and so eager to learn. What a great experience! I came away feeling good about helping in a small way and energized for the future of those young men.
Our itinerary won't work to go to the school but if I had longer in Luang Prabang I would love to visit and spend more time with such a worthwhile project.

Such a wonderful program, stop and have a chat, it is so worthwhile. I can assure you that you will gain/learn much more than you give/teach. Time passes quickly and you
leave feeling “warm and fuzzy” pleased that you stopped, shared and conversed with a young Laotian.

We were walking along the road and we were approached by a French man and he asked if we would give up 1/2 hour to help Laos locals in conversation English. We duly did . It was a lovely experience talking to these students of all ages and Buddhist monks and helping them in their conversation English ( which was very good). 1 hour later we left . They were very grateful and we enjoyed helping them

Big Brother Mouse started as an effort to print books in Laos (there were none before) but evolved into different activities. I spent some time browsing the books - there is one describing the wall decorations at Wat Xiengthong that if a beauty - but I will focus my review on the most inspiring of these activities.
If you speak English (even with an accent) you can volunteer two hours of your time to help local young people just by talking to them.
I did this, and I was profoundly impacted by it. I learned more about Laos in those two hours than in the rest of the four days I spent in the town. I talked to eight young men with very different levels of understanding. The orientations I received were simple and sufficient - no need to teach, just talk to the people.
So for each conversation there was a different rhythm - slow, with gestures, with some to make sure they understood, or at normal speed or even faster with the ones who were fluent. Each conversation took a different path. They usually started with the expected where are you from, how long I was in Laos, where do you study, how large was my family - then I tried to figure out if there was some specific subject to engage. So I ended talking about sports, showing pictures on my phone to discuss them, asking about what college would follow high school. One of the guys has a job interview scheduled in a couple of days, so I gave him some tips and even made a mock interview - to the delight of the guys who were waiting for their time.
It is amazing how those brief encounters (15 min average) provided an excellent opportunity to exchange. I left the place in a state of elation, and I sincerely hope that my drop in that ocean was worth it for the guys - all of them quite poor, with no resources to pay for an English course, some of them coming from distant villages to study.
I strongly recommend a visit to Big Brother Mouse, and be sure that spending two hours with local kids can be an impacting experience.

We visited here as part of our trip in preparation for coming back with a group in Sept/Oct 2020. I was very impressed with the work that has been done and that the staff and volunteers are doing every day and evening. We worked for a day at the school and even though we are teachers the day was "full on," challenged us and encouraged us to want to go back. The staff are welcoming and well organised and this organisation is producing some great learning materials. Worth a volunteer for an evening or a day. there are now two schools

Highlight of our trip to Luang Prubang. What a treat to be able to spend time chatting to local Laotians - lots of laughs and goodwill. A truly wonderful concept and service.

If you speak English and can spare an hour or two just roll up at 5pm and you will be paired with a parent/school child/monk who wants to practise their english. You just have a conversation and share your self and help them with their pronunciation, language skills and so on. It is fantastic fun and really worthwhile and this is a great and important community organisation dedicated to expanding reading skills in the country

Any hostel or guest house in the historic old quarter of Luang Prabang is nearby to Big Brother Mouse, no more than a 15-minute walk and in many cases less. The Big Brother Mouse program is located near the end of the peninsula, near Wat Sene. City Backpackers is perhaps the closest? There is a hostel near Utopia Bar that is close -- Y Not Laos Hostel. Tony Central Hostel. Just look at a map of hostels in the area and pick something that is on the peninsula (which if small and easy to walk, with minimal traffic). LPQ Backpackers is a little further but still definitely easy walking distance.
Note that you can also often get a guesthouse private room in Laos as low as $10-12 as well, just towards the end of the historic district or a little outside of it.
