This bridge is only open seasonally. They take it down before the rainy season to keep it from getting washed away. It is mid March now and they told me it was taken down a week ago. There is a kid with a boat that will take you across though for a few Kip.

Like many others have already said, this bridge has to be built and rebuilt each year. When the rainy season occurs, the water from the river gets a bit strong and thus, I guess the bridge maybe cannot withstand the current. Thus, that’s the reason they have to disassemble it, and then build a new one.
There is a fee to cross, but it’s only 10,000 Kips ($.59 cents US)
I would also recommend visitors to view at around sundown. I got pictures when it was just still light enough, and the bridge is still visible. Also, they were very creative with the design for the lights in that, there are bamboo rice bowls that have been turned upside down, and used almost like lamp shades over the lights!
It looks quite cool once it gets darker outside and you can still see lights on over the bridge, the setting makes for great photos (as well as during the afternoon)
Notably, at the northern end of the peninsula of the main city center where all the sites are, there’s actually another bamboo bridge that one can cross (and am assuming, has a fee to go with it) but not sure as I didn’t cross that one.
The main bamboo bridge has easy walking distance within the city center, and I’d certainly advise going to see this 6-month wonder (if you’re there when it’s standing)
The rainy season is around May, so my guess would be that, if you go from around this time onward, it may not be there
Have a look (and most importantly, a walk across) if you can!

There are two bamboo bridges that you can use on a leisure round walk. Impressive construction that has to be renewed every year after rainy season

There are two bamboo bridges. There is one opposite the back entrance of mount phosi and one a little further walk down.we walked over the one placed opposite bk entrance of mount phosi cost 10000 Kip to the other side and stopped in a great bar/ restaurant which has a great view of the river with big cushions to sit on or private cave like corners for private dinner. There are also some interesting shops like handmade jewellery shop, a wood carving shop, and if you walk straight down as u come off the bridge u will find the two sisters weaving shop. All three shops showed demonstrations and had beautiful goods. You can also book yourself on a course and make something for yourself but you will need three hrs to spare.

Our accommodation, the My Dream Resort, was on the other side of the Nam Khan River not far from the Bamboo Bridge, so having it there made getting to and from the centre of the town very easy. One return crossing costs just 10,000 kip, but tickets are only sold on the north side. The bridge itself is a wonder of hand-crafted engineering and is a fun experience - if slightly off-putting, at least at first! Make the most of it, as it's only there in the dry season.

As of end of October the bamboo bridge is on construction. Looks like it will be ready in a few days.
Those of you travelers that complain about paying 5000kip (0,30usd) I hope you look in the mirror. Locals have to build it again every year because of rain season floods. Don’t be so short sighted.

The Bamboo Bridge is only opened for six months of the year, and crosses the Nam Khan River just before it joins the Mekong. The reason the bridge is only open for six months is that the high waters in the rainy season wash it away and it has to be rebuilt each time. I've seen people say that, at 10,000 Kip it is too expensive, but when you consider that this is only around 84 pence in UK money, or $1.10 in American currency, you realise that it is really nothing.
Some people merely cross and return, just for the experience, but on the other side there is a small town and you can get local food and drink there, which isn't targeted at tourists.
The bridge is right at the end of the peninsula, but not a particularly long walk from the Luang Prabang town centre, so definitely worth a short visit.

5000 kip to cross a bamboo bridge... come on it should be sponsored by the city or the tourism office. Anyway it will not ruin your experience in Luang Prabang.

Hi there, if you head NorthEast from the night market, and head towards a hotel called Saynamkhan River View Hotel, the bridge sits on the river directly across from the hotel.

Hi guys, we are coming to LP end of September. Will there be a bamboo bridge then? Cheers, Bruce and Pauline.

Hi,
The bridge may or may not be there. It all depends on the weather condition. Should d bamboo bridge be swept away due to monsoon, there is another steel bridge nearby. But, nothing like walking on d bamboo bridge. Hope all goes fine by then.
