The bambu theater is closed. They confirmed our booking and we showed up and there's just the old sign. I contacted the group to request a refund and haven't heard anything so I'll pursue it through my bank.

Die Show war hervorragend! Die Schauspieler und Musiker sind mit Herzblut bei der Sache, das merkt man in jedem Augenblick! Großartige Performance auf dieser liebenswerten Kleintheaterbühne. Sehenswert für alle die einen kleinen kulturellen Höhepunkt in ihren Tag in Siem Reap integrieren und dabei noch außerordentlich engagierte junge Künstler unterstützten möchten.

Nous avons récemment assisté à une représentation de théâtre d'ombres (shadow puppets) au Bambu Stage. Le spectacle, à la fois traditionnel et plein d'humour, nous a énormément plu. A la fin de la représentation, nous avons eu la chance de pouvoir échanger avec les talentueux artistes et d'en apprendre un peu plus sur leur art. Encore un grand merci pour votre chaleureux accueil !

I had the chance to be able to stay in Siem Reap for an extended period of time. Bambu Stage is one of the most vivid and wonderful memory I kept from that city. As soon as you step in, it feels like entering a parallel universe, a little Cambodian world outside of space and time.
It's the opposite of a tourist trap: the shows are heartfelt, both creative and grounded in tradition, made with the people.
If you come by Siem Reap, make sure you don't miss it !
The owner is a fascinating guy, too. He's very warm and welcoming and have had a crazy life before coming there. Have a chat with him if you get the chance !

Dieses Schattentheater war eines der größten Überraschung und eines unserer Highlights in Kambodscha. Da wegen Corona schon alle Grenzen geschlossen und wenige Touristen im Land waren, waren wir leider die EINZIGEN 2 Gäste an diesem Abend und es wurde nur für uns gespielt. Dennoch wurden wir sehr nett begrüsst, es wurde uns alles erklärt, wir haben in der schönen Location einen Drink bekommen und es wurde sich sogar sehr nett erkundigt ob man Mückenschutz hat, da die Bühne draußen ist und durch die Scheinwerfer im Dunkeln sehr viele Mücken kommen. Wir durften und nachsprühen und wir haben nichts von den Plagegeistern bemerkt. Die Show bzw. das Theaterstück war so toll und wir waren noch Tage später davon begeistert. Die Jugendlichen spielen dies mit einer Mimik und Freude, dass man so in den Bann der Geschichte gezogen wird und gar nicht bemerkt wie schnell die Zeit vergeht. Es ist eine Kombination aus Schattentheater hinter der Bühne und Theater vor/auf der Bühne. Es war ein sehr lustiges Stück für Erwachsene von einem Bauern, der lieber nicht Wetten und das Leben ohne seine Frau planen sollte. Wir wünschen dem Theater alles Gute und hoffen das diese Tradition überlebt.

This show was recommended as something to do in Siem Reap by the New York Times. It is done by a small group of young performers using string puppets . It is a great introduction to Khmer culture with a good dose of humor. Some of the young people are more confident than others in English but wonderful to see a team pull something like this off. I have never seen anything similar elsewhere in all my travels and would strongly recommend it as something to do in Siem Reap.

I recently attended a very enjoyable performance of Forbidden Rhythms by Medha at Bambu Stage in Siem Reap. Several outdoor open-air performance areas are integrated into an intriguing venue, complete with a small bar and comfortable seating for drinks or food before or after a show. Bambu Stage is located in a lively part of the city, easily walkable from other activities and lodging. The organization promotes local artists and offers the opportunity to share traditions of Cambodian culture in a professional contemporary setting.

Seeing the performance of Forbidden Rhythms at Bambu Stage was one of the highlights of my trip to Siem Reap. Medha is an extremely talented and professional group of artists that shares elements of Cambodian culture and traditions - and the challenging of norms - through acting, music, and dance. I was completely engaged from start to finish. The venue is beautiful - and unique - with open-air stage and seating, as well as a common area to enjoy food or drinks before or after a show. The performance was a good length - just under an hour - and suitable for all ages. I highly recommend including Medha, Forbidden Rhythms, and Bambu Stage in your Siem Reap experience.

I was excited to see a traditional shadow puppet show and was a smidge apprehensive that it'll take some guessing on what the story was going to be about (either the performance was going to be silent and requires the audience to have prior knowledge of the tale or all in Khmer) but I was pleasantly surprised! The performers did the skit in Khme-nglish! (Yea just made that up...)
The venue has great ambiance and the owner welcomes you and gives a brief introduction to remind you to just pay closer attention and you'll be able to hear the performers' English lines and jokes! Talented young folks!

Hello,
we are planning to close in April for major renovations and upgrade to our site. It is the hottest month in Siem Reap, so after a wonderful high season of great reviews, we're having a brief holiday and reopening with improved cultural entertainment in September.

we do three shows- shadow puppets doing folk and modern inventive work
Two TED-like talks using live media theatre to tell stories about Cambodia recent history and one about the temples.

Sure! We have started again in September and will continue through to end of February at least.
We start with two new illustrated talks called SNAP! 150 YEARS OF PHOTOGRAPHY IN CAMBODIA and TEMPLES DE-CODED.
Photography is on Friday, Temples is on Tuesday.
Would Bambu Stage be having any performances at the end of May 2015?

Dear Liza, thank you for your question. We finished our first season at the end of January, and will be coming back with new shows and performances, in different fields (music, dance, history). The coming month we will be hosting our new dynamic lecture series about the History of Angkor Wat. Next to that we can organise private performances for small groups.
