In transit between Puerto Natales and Torre del Paine National Park we stopped at Milodon Cave along one of the two routes to get there. The Milodon was a Pleistocene-age ground sloth standing about 10 ft tall. Explanations along the walkway and in the cave describe in English and Spanish the cave's origin and other Pleistocene animals that lived there. In the cave is a replica of the Milodon in life. I thought the stop was worth it. The cost for non-Chileans was 6000 pesos, about 12 bucks. If you happen to be Chilean, only 3000 pesos.

With a group of 3, this trip was a highlight of our visit to Chile. Roberto was the best guide. We went to Toress del Paine National Park for the day. We did 2 walks the first being to view the alps from the lake, mirror perfect image reflected on the water. The second walk was across the tundra, seeing plenty of wildlife, and rock painting. A picnic lunch was supplied. Highly recommended, won't see anything like this is Australia.

We decided to organize our W Paine trek through Dragon because:
1) we knew we wanted porters to carry some of our gear
2) we wanted to do the trek west to east (unlike many other companies)
*** 3) THE PRICE WAS MUCH LOWER THAN MANY SIMILAR COMPETITORS***
At first, the lower price and lower number of reviews made us nervous, but we went with it. I can now say, it is a real company, and they do deliver.
The company is small and new and operated by Danish ex-pats who set up their clients with freelance guides. This has MANY advantages:
- the price was less than other, more established competitors
- It meant our group was small - only 3 people and our guide. We saw many groups on the trail that had 15 people. Such large numbers made the trek very challenging for those groups. One of these groups took 14 hours to do an easy hike that took our group 6 hours (and we are SLOW walkers!). I would do everything in my power not to get stuck with a group larger than 8.
- It meant the tour was personalized to us. We could go as far as we wanted, or stop when we wanted. One day we did an extra side hike. My mom had issues with her feet and blisters. Because there were only 3 of us, our guide was able to doctor and bind her feet up every day.
- It meant our guide was a freelance guide. Typically, these are the best guides because they are good enough and established enough to be in demand and make it on their own. We had a Chilean gentleman named **Victor Maltus**. He was about 45 and had been doing this 14 years. He knew EVERYONE in the park - the other guides and at the refugios. This meant we got preferential sleeping, we got served earlier or later than others for meals, we got beer without waiting in line, and many other things were free. Having him was invaluable. Also, he was an amazing guide with a great personality. He loves birds, nature, and just people in general. You can tell he loves his job and wouldn't trade being in the park with us for anything. IF YOU GO WITH DRAGON, ASK FOR VICTOR! HE MADE OUR TREK THE AMAZING EXPERIENCE IT WAS!
[To note about email and operation: Most of our conversations over email were with Raquel, a Danish woman who started the company in 2006 who lived in Natales. There is usually a 2-4 day gap in email response from this company, as it is small and often the operators are out on the trail. However, from about Nov on, we have been receiving emails from a woman named Jacqueline. We came to learned that Jacqueline is the coowner and now the primary operator, as Raquel has gone back to the Netherlands. Jacqueline is wonderful, very helpful, and married to one of the porters, Pablo. She met us our last night in town, and I expect she is going to stay around and keep the company going, as her husband is from the area.]

With a group of 4 we had a truly amazing trip. Something we'll remember for sure! We went to the Torres del Paine peaks, camped out at the lake with big chunks of ice from the glacier at our doorstep, and did a glacier hike + ice climb with them. Walking up to the isolated campsite through the incredible wild and rough nature was a treat, there's hardly a place in the world where you feel so close to the rawness of nature. If you have a chance to visit this area in your lifetime, then go for it!
Our organizer, Raquel, was well-prepared and knowledgable. Being out in the mountains the weather is unpredictable, but she made sure we were all well prepared and had the right clothing, tents, sleeping bags and so on. She did a great job arranging everything and we felt safe and comfortable with her. Also, she's funny and good company! Ask her about the organic lunchroom in Puerto Natales if you are in the neighborhood!

We had a great tour to the Torres del Paine peaks and we also booked a glacier hike with them. Both are highly recommended.
The views are on the hike are awesome and hiking the glacier caves and climbing the glacier wall was pretty spectacular. The equipment we hired was perfectly adequate for the conditions, something we heard is not the case with some of the other companies. The Dutch owner Raquel is well-organised and makes sure her clients feel at home. Apart from that she's good company and she knows a lot about the area.
