One of the best preserved heritage temple. There are no words to explain the beauty of Vigrahas, it need to be experienced with your own eyes. Very calm and quit place, away from tourist rush. A must visit along with Belur and Halebid.

We, a family of 10 visited this temple yesterday. It is worth visiting for the sheer architecture and upkeep for so many years. Kudos to the Archeological Survey of India for maintaining the temple so well. The carvings on the pillars and walls are the major attractions. But being close to Belur and Halebidu temple complexes, this temple has not got its due recognition by the visitors and devotees. I would have given 5 star rating for this temple, but for the very egoistic priest in Mr Prashanth who opened only one of the 3 Deities for us to view but refused to open the doors of other two for reasons best known to him. The board outside clearly says the timings to be sunrise to sunset, but he simply refused to show us the other two deities, even though we were there at 1.30 in the noon. But for this, the temple is worth visiting and highly recommend to others.

The most attractive thing in this temple is mirror pillars. Pillar stones are like mirror and you can enjoy viewing them. Pujari was very nice and he explained history in detail. Must visit place.

Belavadi temple is located very close to Chikmagalur and Belur. The temple - I was told is about 1000 years old. The architecture is awesome and even better are the idols inside. This is a Vishnu temple where the deities have been preserved very well. There is hardly any crowd at this place - possibly because of its location. Please do carry water, food, and caps / sunglasses / socks to save your feet / head from the sun. It can get very hot in here specially during the summer months.
I would definitely recommend a visit to this place.

Sri Veeranarayana Temple, is a classic example of the Hoysala architecture built in 12th century made of soapstone and is popular for its architecture.. The temple is a trikuta (tri – 3, kuta – shrines) style of temple. There are 3 gopurams. The three Gods worshipped here are:Veeranarayana, Gopalkrishna and Yoga Narasimha, 3 avatars of same God, Lord Vishnu!
The steps to the temple is flanked by two well-sculpted elephants. Walking in towards the sanctum door was like crossing a path lined with mammoth sandstone pillars.
The common feature of this style of architecture involves an area called the Sabhamantapa, where the elders of the village used to assemble to discuss matters of importance. There is seating arrangement all around. The pillars are round, huge and each with a different design.
The major difference between other Hoysala temples around and the Veeranarayana temple is that the inner walls of the shrine is plain, but its roof is exquisitely carved, having geometric patterns, figures of Gods and warriors in different postures.
Location: Belavadi a village in Chikkamagaluru District of Karnataka.
Distance from Chikkamangalur town : 29km enroute to Bangalore
Time required for sight-seeing: 1 hour
Trivia: This is said to be the place mentioned in Mahabharatha where Pandava prince Bheema killed the demon Bakasura and protected the village and its people
Tip: If you visit on March 23rd you can see the rising sun’s rays falling on the navel of idol of Veeranarayana.

Is there too much walking or can it be visited by someone who can't walk much?

Belavadi is 12 km from Halebeedu, and 29 km from Chikmagalur. Once you reach the village by vehicle, you can stop at the Veeranarana Temple and walk inside. Then the Udhbava Ganpati Temple is half a kilometer from the first temple. You can park outside the Ganpati temple if you do not want to walk. Hence there is no need to walk too much. But the temples do not have wheelchair access.
