The dam and surrounding areas are great the whole walk is about 3.5 km and it costs 20 rupees for the visit.

The Cheruthoni dam has a lot of historic significance for the people of Kerala. The place is a must-visit for anyone travelling to Idukki.

the view from cheruthony dam is one of the most beautiful sights of Idukki, the travellers can witness both the dams ie, cheruthony dam and Idukki dam at the same time, Cheruthoni is the largest and highest gravity dam in Kerala.
a good number of restaurants are available in the city, for both vegetarian and non-vegetarians.
On 10 August 2018, all five radial floodgates of the dam were raised for the first time in the 21st century after a long period of 26 years with the water level in the dam exceeding the 2400 ft mark.

Enjoyed soaking up the scenery overlooking the Reservoir. No vehicles other than electric passenger carriers or Police.
No phones or cameras allowed but kiosk by ticket office keeps bags against payment (10 rupees).

The Cheruthoni Dam, located in Idukki District, Kerala, India, is a 138m tall concrete gravity dam. This dam was constructed as part of the Idukki Hydroelectric Project along with two other dams at Idukki and Kulamavu. The project was completed with Canadian aid. The Government of Canada aided the Project with long term loans and grants. S.N.C.Inc., Canada, a firm of Consulting Engineers were advising and assisting Project Engineers under the Canadian

If we are vising here we can see two dams nearby. Cheruthoni Dam and Idukki Arch Dam. Cheruthoni dam is an ordinary one, but Idukki Arch Dam is an amazing construction and its one of the biggest arch dam in Asia. These both dams and another one - Kulamavu dam also are a prt of single reservoir of Idukki Hydro Electric Project.

While Idukki Dam is an arch dam between two hills, it is the Cheruthoni Dam that contains the shutter gates which are opened for letting out water for both power generation as well as in case the reservoir is filled to capacity. An electric buggy is available for those unwilling to walk the distance of 1 km plus, connecting both the dams.

This is where you take your tickets and walk across the dam path way to the Idukki Arch dam. Famous idukki reservoir's shutters are located in the dam and is recently opened in 2018 kerala floods, which is rare, as it can hold a massive amount of water...

It's a n awesome dam with panoramic view. Unfortunately no photography is allowed. So we could not treasure our memories associated with this dam.
