The Mukteshwara Temple is one of Bhubaneshwar’s important ancient temples, believed to have been built in the 10th century CE. The temple is not a single structure, but a group, situated beside a water pool and set amidst serene gardens. The temple complex is connected by a short path to the Parashurameshwar Temple, which is only about 100 metres or so away.
The gardens here seem to be popular with local visitors as a place to relax: if you too only want to sit in the garden and not go to any of the temples, you can keep your footwear on. However, if you want to visit (even on the outside, not going inside) any of the temples, take off your shoes once you enter the garden.
The subsidiary shrines here are beautiful, but the main temple—marked by an ornate arched ‘toran’ gateway—is in a league all its own: it’s very beautifully carved, covered all over with a plethora of motifs and themes, from snakes (naags), deities, elephants, shaalbhanjikas, tantric imagery, and much more.
No entry fee is charged. No priest was around when we visited, but this is a temple that’s still functional. Every year, it is also the venue for an annual festival of music and dance performances.

The Mukteshwar Temple in Bhubaneswar is a stunning testament to ancient Indian architecture, renowned for its intricate carvings, majestic spire, and spiritual significance. Built in the 10th century during the reign of the Somavamsi dynasty, this temple is a masterpiece of Kalinga architecture, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Despite being more than a millennium old, the Mukteshwar Temple remains remarkably well-preserved, thanks to ongoing conservation efforts by archaeological authorities. It continues to attract devotees, scholars, and tourists from around the world, who come to marvel at its architectural splendor and spiritual significance.

The Mukteshwara Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva located, dating to the 10th-century. The temple is a fine example for Kalinga architecture, but all compacted into a much smaller building. The temple has some unique features including the torana archway at the entrance and vimana tower.
The archway stands about 10 metres from the entrance into the temple proper and is decorated with three heads, which show Buddhists influences in that each could easily be mistaken for the head of the Buddha. Around the arches are sculpted female spirits in repose seductively on either side of the central head at the apex. The Vimana has a square plan and is built over the sanctum in typical Kalinga architectural fashion. The four sides of the pyramidal roof are decorated with horizontal bands and sculptural figures. Figures include demons, dwarfs and sculptures to look out for, the Hindu god Shiva as the divine cosmic dancer.

The Mukteshwar (Lord of Freedom-from the cycle of births and deaths) temple is at Bhubaneswar, Capital city of State of Odisha is dedicated to Lord Shiva and famous for its great architecture and carving specially for Torans ( Gate). Complex has pond with no. of fishes and turtle. The temple is regarded as a gem of Nagara architecture of Kalinga architecture. This architecture is one of the basic reasons why Mukteshvara Temple is also known as the "Gem of Odisha architecture" or "Kalinga Architecture" . The temple faces west and is constructed in a lower basement amidst a group of temples. There is a great architectural, carving, spiritual, rich cultural and historical significance of the place. The Department of Tourism of the state government organises a three-day yearly dance function called Mukteswar Dance Festival in the temple premises. This festival celebrates the features of Odissi, the classical dance form of Odisha and Odissi music, the classical music of the same tradition. Enjoy our great heritage and save it.

This is a beautiful temple built in typical Odia design across a park. It is a very calm place without too many priests and one can spend some time just sitting quietly in the compound of the temple. There is a small rectangular pond besides the temple but am not sure how clean the water is.

Most of the important temples are centrally located; in and around the old town. Thus, the Lingaraja; Mukteshwara are all actually within walking distance.
Take a walk from Mukteshwara to Lingaraja via the Bindusagar lake.
Bhubaneswar has a very effective auto rick system, that is called 'shared auto'. They run on set routes and charge between 5 to 20 rupees.
