Beautiful citadel inhabited by Indians. Exotic atmosphere to walk through the narrow and quiet streets under the extraordinary stone lace carved facades.
This ochre stone gives the city an incomparable golden effect.
It's a great discovery.

A visit to Jaisalmer can't be completed without visiting this fort. This historical fort was built in 1156 AD by King Jaisal after whom it's named. It was built with yellow sandstone due to which after sunset it looks like golden fort. It became very famous after the release of a film Sonar Quila, shot here, by famous director Satyajit Ray. It is one of the few living forts in the world. There are still about 4000 people living inside fort who are the decedents of Rajput and Brahmin families who were serving royal families at one time.
The Jain temples inside are worth seeing for its art and architecture. The royal palace with ornate balconies and beautiful carved pillars are marvelous. There are shops selling Rajasthani handicrafts, silver jewelry, printed textile etc. Bargaining is the norm so don't hesitate to bargain. There are many restaurants serving local cuisine which are worth trying. A guided tour is must to understand and roam around inside fort. Our guide Aadil was very helpful.
In 2013 it was declared a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE.

Known as the 'Golden Fort' due to its yellow sandstone structure, Jaisalmer Fort is a living fort with shops, hotels, and ancient havelis. Exploring its narrow lanes offers a step back in time.

One of the best fort experience you can wish for...
I.t is the only living fort in India and among very few such first in the world..
100ed's of families are residing inside the premises.
It's a chalti firti city inside.
You got to experience shopping, restaurants, temples, local lanes, chowks and many such things that you won't find in any other fort.
It's a must visit place...
And if you can...try visiting 2 times..
1st day time and 2nd night time...
Do visit the canon point in the night hours...you will get a mesmerizing view of the city

Golden Jaisalmer, as it is called, the fort is located in the heart of the city. Fort itself is a live fort with some 5000 people living within the walls. There is no entry fee, being a living fort it is generally very crowded, we went in the month of jan which is the peak holiday season.
You can have nice city view from top of the fort. Don't miss to visit jain temple. We skipped museum. There is big market outside fort you can explore, you do have shops inside but those are generally expensive.
It is advisable to take a guide along who can explain bit of history and relevance.
Overall a good experience, cannot be explored in summers.

A trip to Jaisalmer is incomplete without visiting the magnificent Jaisalmer Fort.
The fort is a treasure trove of rich heritage, though it does show signs of neglect. It is advisable to take a taxi to the fort to avoid the hassle of finding parking. The walk to the fort is an exciting experience, with vibrant stalls offering unique Rajasthani items like colorful Rajasthani caps and camel leather bags. However, I recommend holding off on shopping until after your visit.
The entry to the fort is free but often crowded, so don't expect a clean or spacious compound. Hiring a local guide is highly recommended to truly appreciate the history and significance of the fort. If you're traveling by tourist taxi, your driver can usually connect you with a guide. Alternatively, feel free to message me for the contact details of Mr. Harish, an exceptional guide who made our visit memorable. He offers an in-depth tour of the fort, various havelis, the Jain temple, and even introduces you to local famous snacks and sweet shops (Dhanraj Ranmal Bhatia) and highly recommended to try Jalebi, Onion Kachori, Hot Milk, Chilli & Bread Pakoras and Ghewar.
Mr. Harish is not only knowledgeable but also practical, explaining the fort's rich history and architectural significance. He shared insights about the multiple gates, the deteriorating foundation, the royal celebrations, the king’s throne, the queen’s quarters, and the intricacies of the Jain temple’s stone carvings.
One of the highlights of our visit was accessing a rooftop restaurant with a panoramic view of the golden city, the lake Gadi, and the railway station, all under a stunning blue sky. The rooftop also offers the chance to enjoy coffee or food with the fort as a backdrop, along with access to clean restrooms—a rare convenience in the area.
The tour of the fort, temple, and havelis takes approximately 3 to 4 hours. While the walk can be long and the surroundings may lack cleanliness, the experience is absolutely worth it.
Pro Tips:
Engage in two-way communication with your guide to make the experience more interactive and enjoyable.
Prepare for a long walk and wear comfortable footwear.
Jaisalmer Fort is a must-visit, and I highly recommend hiring a guide like Mr. Harish to enhance your experience.

Visiting Jaisalmer Fort was like walking through history. The moment I stepped inside, its golden limestone walls and intricate carvings left me in awe. It’s not just a fort; it’s a living, breathing piece of history that has stood the test of time.
What made the experience even more special was our guide, Narendra Ji, who lives in the fort with his family. His ancestors served as royal pandits, and his stories brought the fort to life. From tales of the Silk Route and spice trade to the deeds of kings who shaped this desert citadel, every word added depth to the beauty around me.
Exploring the fort’s bustling local markets filled with handicrafts, vibrant trinkets, and authentic Rajasthani food was a delight. It’s incredible how life still thrives within the fort’s walls—proof that it truly is a “living fort.”
One of the most fascinating moments was learning about the fossilized utensils and the ancient history of the Thar Desert. It’s a reminder of how deeply rooted this place is in time, culture, and resilience.
Jaisalmer Fort isn’t just about the architecture; it’s about the stories, the culture, and the spirit of the people who call it home. A must-visit for anyone who loves history, heritage, and a touch of magic in the desert.

One of the most beautiful complexes to visit in Rajasthan tour. It is very large and I recommend visiting it with a guide to understand the history and architectural peculiarities of the place. The visit takes some time, but it is definitely worth it!

Hello, Can anyone tell me where to get the audio guide for Jaisalmer fort ? Is it avalable at the time of purchasing the ticket to the fort ? Also please let me know if the tickets and audio guides are available to buy online.

Hi, yes there is audio guide available there. We opted for it while buying the tickets.
However, the human guides are very good here as well as at the Chittorgarh fort.

Was the fort built for war or is it just a city within huge walls?
What i mean is -
1) Does the entrance have aspects to it that were built to ensure the enemy does get in?
2) Are there parts of fort that are designed to stop and kill enemies that have gotten in
3) Are there aspects of the fort that are built to save the king in case all other strategies dail.

How long and steep is the walk to the fort?
كُتب بتاريخ 19 سبتمبر 2019
From the 1st gate to the main square inside the fort is 200 metres (220 yards) with a moderate grade. On a scale of 1 to 10 with dead flat being 1 and a sheer cliff being 10, I'd say the walk would be a 4.
The cobble stones however are uneven and can be slippery when wet, so comfortable shoes are preferable to thongs (flip flops). You also need to keep to one side as locals on motorbikes and tuk tuks buzz up and down at speed.
If you take a tuk tuk up to the fort you will be charged 50 rupee (locals are charged 10).
Just before the last gate there's a great little cafe where you can catch your breath and enjoy a nice pastry before passing through the last gate into the fort.
Have a great trip.

The fort
Longewala post - 120 kms ahead of Jaiselmer. The drive is just so beautiful.
Also, you can go to see the India - Pak border which is another 30-35 kms ahead of Longewala. This needs prior permission from BSF(the cab guy will help you get that-we didn’t know so couldn’t cover that). That has to be done before 3-4 pm.
