Do not miss. 1 hour train ride between Ooty and Coonoor. Breathtaking views. Ticket to be booked on IRCTC. First class ticket abt Rs 350. You get a designated seat in a 6 seater cabin.

Took the trip from Coonoor to Ooty on a beautiful weather day and luckily it was not crowded with the entire compartment box to us. The train staff was extremely nice and helpful. Managed to be in the front compartment of the train with the best views and pictures of lifetime. The view from the train was stunning with low clouds, drizzling and so much greenary everywhere we looked. It instilled childlike excitement, must do in a good weather!

Heritage train travel is a pleasant one and enjoyed the trip from Coonoor to Ooty and it took nearly one and half hour. Attached one coach as first class, but it is looking like other coaches and little congested. Though they are charging huge amount, facility is to be improved. Children enjoyed the travel of fun ride in the heritage train.

It might sound childish but trust me, we as adults enjoyed this equally!! It's a fun ride in the toy train, not something you see a lot across the country. Just go for the experience, reminds you of the good old days :)

The train journey can be planned (at least one way). Train tickets can be purchased at the station 30 min prior to departure or in advance (both online or at reservation counters)

Seating of train has to be improved, its too congested. Window glasses are unclean and its very hard to see whats there outside. While travelling from Ooty to Metupaliyam make sure you don't leave your car at Ooty station as they closed gates to parking lot by the time we reached from Metupaliyam to Ooty. My trip was from Ooty to Metupaliyam, train arrived late by one hour to Metupaliyam, as soon as I arrived I took cab which I booked earlier back to Ooty which takes 2 hours atleast. By the time I reached Ooty station, parking lot gates where closed, cab driver was kind to help us to untie a knot to one of the gates and we were able to get our car out of parking lot. Too poor of maintenance on Ooty train station staff, why in this world will they close a parking lot for train station? atleast they should keep some security, right? no one there to help in late evening hours.

We took the train from Ooty to Connoor. It was a fun ride albeit not as scenic as we expected. I understood from the TC that the ride to Mettupalaayam is more scenic ( we did a road drive here later ) . There are 7-8 stops and all the stations are small , CLEAN and it gave me a feeling of being taken back in time. Conoor station is big and is a nice place as a tourist. Lots to do and look around including the museum and the paintings. The station building is also ancinet .

Beautiful experience! We travelled from Ooty to Coonoor and it lovely. The heritage train has its own charm. One hour ride was simply wow! The person on ticket counter was very rude though

Foi uma agradável surpresa a viagem neste comboio histórico. Carruagens bem cuidadas e que mantêm a tradição. As paisagens durante a viagem são maravilhosas.

I like narrow gage railways so this was a must. The popularity of the trip was something to behold. The train was full. The first class carriage compartment was shared with a Kerala family on a weekend away. They were great fun. The views as we climbed up the mountains were spectacular. The station names a reminder of the the Home Counties rather South India but the men that built the line did so to exploited the climatic conditions to grow tea and coffee and so transformed the landscape.

As someone else has said, you won’t be able to take anything more than small hand luggage size packs in this train, and the less you carry the more comfortable you will be. It stops regularly for snacks! At either town you should be able to hire bikes to explore, and I guess as Ooty is bigger I would try there.

Hi Abhijith,
Not sure if you have already undertaken the trip.If you have not,then travel between Coonoor and Mettupalayam. This route is where you will experience the thrill. Nothing much to experience on the Ooty to Coonoor route.
How can I book first-class ticket from coonoor to ooty online?

There is no first class in the train and its about an hour journey. Go to irctc and make the booking to save last minute hassle. The station code for Ooty is UAM and Conoor is ONR.

Hello, I am still not able to book ticket for toy train from ooty to coonoor. Please guide or give links through which I can book it. I am going in April.

You need not book tickets online. Just go the station early, at least an hour if not early and stand in the queue for the tickets. You should be able to board the train with a valid ticket easily.

I suggest hotel Sanjay at charring cross, in the heart of of the city, near botanical garden. I have stayed there last April. It seems a convenient location to visit around Ooty. best wishes

Hi, I am planning to visit ooty in mid April. I want to know approx. how much time toy train takes to reach coonoor from ooty? And if we book from IRCTC then the tickets will be valid !! As many says we need to buy tickets from ooty station only. Your suggestion / Advise will be great.

Hi, April is the best time to visit Ooty to feel the aoft cool climate. Coonoor takes about one hour. But I suggest u to travel up to Mettupalayam to enjoy the hill journey. It takes 3 hour ie starts at 2 PM from Ooty and reach Mettupalayam at 5.15. Surely you can book through IRCTC. I have done it 3 months back....ok

irctc is the best as timings keep changing according to season. April-May-June is peak season.

I just checked on irctc, all tickets for this train are booked till december. I want to travel from coonoor to ooty on 09-Oct, is there no other way to get the tickets arranged?

You can get the tickets at the railway station itself . Both first class and general compartment are easily available on the spot more so on weekdays .

Hi ,
To travel from Coonoor to Ooty, no prior booking is needed.
You'll have to reach the station by 7 -7:30 am and stand in queue to get the tickets.
