Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam (temple tank) is a temple pond complex with a man-made island in the middle. This is one of the largest temple tanks in South India. On the island stands Vigneshwara Temple, used for religious ceremonies only.
We went daytime and walked around the entire outside where much was happening. There were many stalls at front and left of the tank preparing you openings after 6 pm. Unfortunately we couldn't be there at evening to see it lit up but imagine it would look quite good.

This listing is about the pond or tank (teppakulam means pond), not the temple in the middle. It dates from 1645 when the Vaigai river clay deposits were dug out to make bricks for the construction of a palace. The pond is linked with the nearby Vaigai river.
Still a beautiful sight, especially after dark when the temple is lit. During Thaipusam (full moon festival) floats transport the idols of Meenakshi and Sundareshwarar to Mariamman temple.
The location is less congested than the area around the Meenakshi temple complex. Very good for a walk, especially in the evening or early morning.

This man made waterbody was excavated in 1645 by king Thirumalai Nayakkar when the Nayakkar Mahal. There is a beautiful structure in the middle of this temple tank called the Maiya Mandapam. In the summer months the tank is empty. After the monsoon it brims with water. It is a worthwhile landmark to visit

After so many years, it is good to see the tank full of water in Feb. We visited immediately after the theppam festival. It is worth to spend the evening walking along the tank and locals sure will cherish this every day.

Walk around this glorious temple tank during evening hours, when it’s not very hot. Can take few photos. There are several roadside eateries around, which may not be very hygienic. Must visit, if you are in Madurai .

This is a popular place to visit here. Temple complex was large and well organised. A tiny pond located near the premises of temple.

The Teppakulam (temple tank) is a sight to behold when it is filled with water and the night sky is lit with stars. It is one of the large temple tanks and in Madurai an attraction that you can head to if you have some extra time at your disposal. There is no point visiting the Teppakulam when it is dry. But when the tank is full you will enjoy it in the midst of dazzling lights in the evenings. If you are unable to go inside, you can just take a driver around it. After visiting the Teppakulam you could perhaps head to the Sree Sabarees hotel nearby that is famed for its quality vegetarian food.

How much far is this temple from Meenakshi temple and hw much time required to visit this temple. How far is this from Madurai Airport
كُتب بتاريخ 23 نوفمبر 2017
Meenakshi temple is around 4 kms from here and it would take you approximately 20-25 minutes to get there. In Meenaskhi temple, you will need around 45 mins to 1 hour for complete darshan. Suggest you go at around 4 pm when the temple reopens as the rush is less at that time. Also, get the special darshan tickets while getting in through the East Gate which will help a lot. The Vandiyur Mariamman temple is around 15 kms from the airport and takes around 45 minutes drive.

How did it acquire the name Vandiyur. My surname is Vandayar! My great grandfather emigrated from India.
كُتب بتاريخ 16 ديسمبر 2016
Vandayar is a caste name. But vandiyur is a place name. The name might be originated from vandi-vehicle oor- is place
كُتب بتاريخ 16 ديسمبر 2016
Is there a way to get into the temple? A ferry possibly?
If it is dry, is it possible to walk over? Is the temple open?
Thanks
كُتب بتاريخ 29 أغسطس 2015
Most of the time it is dry only,, our can walk to the temple. In wet season small boats available.
