The Temple complex is big . For darshan be prepared to stand for almost a 60 to 90 minutes in queue. There are a limited number of guides so go a little early so you want to hire one. The complex also has the 1000 pillar mandap . it is quite fascinating . Must visit

This was the most amazing temple in southern India - there are 4 gates and temples making up one large complex Rashid Rajesh was our guide (+91 99948 49453) - he was superb and his knowledge was astounding - true depth to the history of Hinduism - he really knows it inside out

No photography inside, rude security. I wish I had not bothered to come to Madurai.
The step well inside is very nice, but Wikipedia has the photo I was not allowed to take. Ridiculous rules.

A bit of a football match experience. 33000 visitors per day. Restricted areas in shrines for Hindus. Where are the toilets? Security took off me my very minute bottle of hand gel! Photographs are not permitted. Security for electronic devices is a hand pat down . Fancy doing this 33000 times a day!
The temple itself is splendid carved stone. You pay extra to see the 1000 pillar hall- the museum is particularly badly displayed. A guide is helpful , otherwise the temple is not tourist friendly. I did enjoy watching the evening ceremony. Many people pestered us to be a guide when our guide went off to see what was happening and when.
I was disappointed to not have any photo of the interior. Even the Golden Temple in Amritsar allows. I can see that flash would detract from the religious experience and perhaps waving mobile phones ( it certainly is not a pop concert!). There needs to be more consideration of tourism .

templo antiguo, con culto muy fervoroso. Van peregrinos hindúes de toda la India. Viene a ser como un Santiago de Compostela nuestro, en la India. Muy interesante visita. Buen estado de conservación. Acceder es muy farragoso por las colas para dejar cualquier mochila de ciudad, zapatos y teléfonos móviles. 3 colas al estilo indio. O sea, a mogollón. Seguridad con arco detector de metales, cacheo, etc.
Insisto en que es muy interesante. Los alrededores del templo están animados de tiendas y gentes. El interior está lleno de deidades y estancias, así como los gopuram
llenos de imágenes y policromados, altísimos, que marcan la entrada por los diferentes puntos cardinales.

The rating of five is for the beauty and the significance of this Shiva temple. It a marvelous complex with several impressive gates, big and small temples, the golden lotus pool, the thousand pillared hall. We entered through the North Gate. The eitre has to be according to the rules - long pants, long dresses; short sleeves cannot be too shot, nothing sleeveless, no shoes and absolutely no socks. You get to be padded, screened, and searched. One is not allowed to take any photos but even not allowed to have a cell phone with you or camera on premises. Importantly electronic watches of all kinds are forbidden. Also only water in a bottle is tolerated. No food allowed, no snacks or candy bar - all gets confiscated. That includes also hand sanitizers.
It is good to know about it all and not to get disappointed and disenchanted , which certainly spoils the unique opportunity to visit this holy complex.
The temple is amazing . We visited it rather quickly and it took us over three hours on a day which was relatively not busy for the temple.
Strolling in the area is spoiled by intensity of street sellers of souvenirs and beggars.
Some stores across from the North Gate will watch your valuable cell phones and watches if you visit their store afterwards.
It is good to know about it all and not to get disappointed and disenchanted , which certainly spoils the unique opportunity to visit this holy complex.

I visited temple during evening.
The approach to temple is through crowded street filled with vendors ..
No safety issues as such..
There’s a ticket queue (₹100/ person) which can help to cut down waiting time..
Inside temple there is idols of Hindu Goddess and Gods..Temple priests are money minded..
The priest asked for donations (₹ 500 ) to accept our offering for God.
Pity on such mentality..
They may not take your offering incase you don’t give money..
This may not be of interest to those who don’t practice Hinduism..

Wir hatten mit Rasheed Rajesh eine fantastische Tour durch die Tempel
von Madurai. Mr. Rajesh ist ein großer Kenner der hinduistischen Mythologie, er hat uns nicht nur die einzelnen Figuren und Symbole in den Tempeln gut erklärt, sondern auch die Zusammenhänge, Geschichten und Beziehungen der hinduistischen Götter. Er zeigt einem auch die besten Plätze fürs Fotoshooting. Für uns war die Tour mit ihm ein großes Vergnügen und sehr lehrreich.

Excellent Darshan at the temple. We went in the.morning around 6 AM. We were lucky as the crowd was minimal. It took.is 2 hous to complete the darshan

I really looked forward to visiting the temple. I was appalled by the dreaconian restrictions in place in the name of security.
Why are cell phones not allowed? In a huge temple like this how can one communicate especially when there is a disabled person in the group? What threat does a mobile phone pose?
Why was the right to take photographs taken away? Mine and other people's desire to visit the temple again is lost with these restrictions.

Vannakam. You have to follow the long... long queue till you reach the entrance of the altar where you wait patiently till the swamis open the curtain and then you can have darshan.
When we are trying to book the abishekam tickets for madurai Meenakshi Amman through temple official website, not able to find the abishekam seva in the list. Please guide us.

We got our tickets at the temple. Our guide took us to the Indian nationals entrance as he said the queue would be smaller. Took about 30 minutes to get in. If you can book on line I would.

I am going to visit Meenakshi temple today 8th Nov 2022. Temple is closed because of lunar eclipse and will open after 7pm. Mu train is at 8 pm. Can I visit after 7pm and return?

Meenakshi temple is about 2km approximately from the Railway station with the drive time of 10-15min.
You never know when will you come back to the temple again, so if you have less luggage and comfortable to take chance then you may take Darshan.
Can I get abhishekam tickets in booking counter for that day itself ?

You can buy the fast track ticket but, because of the huge queues to this temple, it, nevertheless, takes a long time to reach the front and see the deity.

If you are talking about accommodations through temple? Then yes there is basic lodging offered by the temple. And it would be at an economical rate.

I am planning to travel to the temple by car with family. Is there any parking space near the temple?
There was some news a few years ago about a multi level parking area being constructed in N. Aavani Moola Veedhi. Is that completed and available?

Access to vehicles as well as parking is not allowed near the temple. You would have to park a few streets away and walk.
