A trip to Albany would only be complete with seeing New York's grand Capitol Building and the Empire State Plaza, the seat of New York State's government.
Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza - one of the most spectacular capital centers in the country. The Plaza was the vision of Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, who wanted to create "the most electrifying capital in the world." Since its completion in 1978, The Empire State Plaza has become a cultural center for thousands of visitors yearly.
The buildings are set around three beautiful reflecting pools, accented by fountains in the summer. Empire State Plaza events host Summer at the Plaza, including an outdoor Farmers Market, movies under the stars, and other festivals.
The government buildings are all connected below ground, so follow the underground maze from the Capitol Building to the Egg Performing Arts Center, to the Corning Tower, to the New York State Museum.
what to See:
1) For breathtaking skyline views, head to the Corning Tower Observation Deck. Located on the 42nd floor of the tallest skyscraper in New York State outside of NYC.
2) New York State Capitol Building: Marvel at the magnificent New York State Capitol Building on your next visit to Albany.
3) Empire State Plaza Art Collection: It is the most important State collection of modern art in the country.
4) The Egg: The Egg is a performing arts center dedicated to providing Capital Region audiences with the best arts offerings and providing a showcase for NYS artists.
5) New York State Museum: Explore the cultural and natural history of New York State at the New York State Museum.
6) New York State Education Building: Across the street from the Empire State Plaza is the stunning New York State Education Building

We really liked having the ability to park and meander in this Plaza before our tour of the State Capitol. There is a wonderful food court where we ate at the PBD Kitchen. We had a big burgerdilla with chips and it was big enough to share. It was delicious! There’s also a very nice visitors center where you can buy souvenirs as well. More importantly, it gives you a nice indoor space to get from the NY State Museum to the State Capitol.

The architecture of the area did not disappoint (retired architects!). The Plaza reminded us of a poor man's Brasilia with the regimented towers, the Egg Auditorium, the State Museum, State Library, State Archives buildings and the fountains. We just missed be able to go up the free observation deck 42 floors above the Plaza by minutes which was disappointing.
The State Capitol was very impressive and had we had time, we'd have liked to look inside. The City Hall was also an attractive Henry Hobson Richardson design.
The near by New York State Education Department was also monumentally impressive. The area had very few people about which gave it a slightly surreal feel.

Please be aware this is the state capital of NY. Many downtown businesses base their hours on if the gov't is in session or not. Check hours before coming.

Came here in the morning, pretty cool place, definitely felt futuristic and different. The Egg was the most interesting. Didn't have enough time to explore the Museum unfortunately, next time. I had no idea this was here just came across while doing a walkabout, very happy that I did find it. Highly recommend coming here.
Great spot for a I Love NY selfie is here too!

We went on the 4th July for the activities. It was free parking. The area was great! Tons of people walking around. Live music and food vendors all around. Unfortunately they had to cancel the fireworks due to a severe storm. We went early so we got to spend 3 hours there.

Sadly they just drained the pools before our visit in preparation for winter. Still an open and impressive array of buildings, especially The Egg.

So happy to return to the Empire State Plaza after our first visit in 2018. A fan of Midcentury Modern architecture, the story of how Gov. Nelson Rockefeller hired architect Wallace Harrison to design this engaging public space and how it developed is intriguing. On our initial visit, we went to the Corning Tower's observation deck, walked around the State Archive building, saw what we could of The Egg, and went down to the underground Plaza and Concourse. We were so taken with the architecture that we didn't see all the public art installations, so that was the purpose of this 2nd visit on the last day of our roadtrip. Great to see the outdoor pieces by Calder, Claes Oldenburg, George Rickey, George Sugarman, and Tony Smith. Disappointed that the Ellsworth Kelly was not on view, but that happens! I would not hesitate to visit again to enjoy the space and chill for a while!!

I researched and planned this visit for weeks but, when I got there, I found the access to elevators was blocked... on a saturday! The undergroud concourse had great artwork on display but I was very disappointed to miss the Plaza... it was a beautiful day too! Walking around the place, I got a feeling of "Life After People"...almost deserted...

The plaza, which dates from the era of the Rockefeller governorship (1960s), is an example of mid-century futuristic design, with The Egg, a concert venue, dominating the eastern side of the plaza. The State Museum is at the south end, a somewhat nondescript building given the magnificence of the Egg. Below the plaza level is a mall with shops that are frequented by government workers and tourists alike. It's very quiet on weekends, and most of the shops are closed, but the upper level is blissfully uncrowded and a great place to wander around and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings.

Where to eat? Is there a place to buy food at the Plaza?

There are several dining options at the Empire State Plaza. Most of the options are found in the underground concourse but some of the Plaza's other buildings have eating options as well.
A full list of dining options can be found on our website at ogs.ny.gov. If you have further questions, call the Plaza Visitor Center at 518-474-2418. Thank you.
