We visited on a blisteringly hot summer's afternoon, mid week, and the cool, high ceilinged environment of the museum was a welcome relief.
We had travelled down a couple of times before, unaware that the museum was temporarily closed whilst they set up the new exhibition - there hadn't been any notification of this on the website and it was only by using Google Translate on the notice on the door, that we managed to ascertain that we couldn't visit until the beginning of August.
This is quite a compact museum, but with large, open spaces for display. We went to see the latest exhibition - The Future of Cities - exploring the 'changing faces of cities through the multifaceted entanglement of the past, present, and future, and imagining the future cities that will have newly emerged in connection to the present. Furthermore, the Exhibition explores open possibilities of future cities as 'terrapolis', in which every living species on the planet co-exists with equal rights.'
Quite lofty ideals to display then.
Many of the exhibits were interactive, walk through, videos, sound etc. Judging by the other visitors we saw there, it certainly appealed to young people. We are an active retired couple from the UK, early / mid sixties and I have to say that sometimes modern art just leaves me feeling either stupid or frustrated. This particular presentation just didn't click with me at all, but that is not to detract from the work and thought that had gone into it; the appreciation of art is, after all, a uniquely personal experience.
The guide we picked up in the entrance lobby had English descriptions, as did the wall plaques in the galleries and the staff were friendly and informative and were happy to converse in English - most welcome.
A light, airy and cool cafe was a welcome place to top up with cold drinks before heading home.
The art theme continues outside with a series of sculptures and dancing fountains.
Definitely worth a visit, the Museum is located on the same basic campus as two concert halls, the Lee Ungno Art Gallery, the Natural Heritage Centre and the Hanbat Arboretum, so plenty to do and see and you could easily spend a day here.
It is worth trying to find accurate information about opening times and current exhibitions before you visit, to save you wasted journeys such as we had. The website is still not showing the current exhibition, so other sources might be best to try.

Daejeon Museum of Art is the other public museum in the Daejeon Performance Art Center Complex. A special exhibit (that I wasn’t willing to pay 7000 won for) was taking place at the time in most of the display space, so the general area was limited to just one room. Even if there isn’t much going on inside, the grounds of the complex has plenty of sculptures to check out making the visit worthwhile.
