‪A great experience at a facility doing legitimate conservation work. The dedicated staff answered all our questions and were very knowledgeable.‬

‪They’ve brought the gibbon back from extinction in this last rainforest of Phuket. This is a rehabilitation centre where they are either nurtured back to health to be released into the wild, or kept to live out their days if they can’t be released. Guide was super knowledgeable and lovely. It is purposefully designed to not be up-close and personal so these creatures don’t become too attached to humans. Very happy to contribute to this amazing work.‬

‪Brilliant educational experience! A bit on the pricey side but it goes to a good cause. We travelled as a couple and spent over 2 hours with 2 excellent guides. We did the research project experience and really enjoyed it. The fee to get into the national park is also included in the ticket price so make sure and have time to visit the waterfall afterwards (200m further up the track).

I have seen reviews that talk about gibbons in cages. Some are, that’s true and if you look from the road without a guide explaining I can see how it might look bad. It really isn’t like this though. The gibbons in cages are either being rehabilitated or are too sick to be put into the wild (missing limbs etc).. Rehabilitation takes years as they have to be weaned off humans then paired up and a family unit (including babies) needs to be made. All of the animals are rescues and some so badly treated the process of naturalisation takes years. The place has been running for 30 year and they are very dedicated and underfunded. Releasing a lone gibbon into the wild is a death sentence. So please don’t take on board reviews from people that have just walked past.

You do not get close to the animals here, you can feed them from a distance and learn a heap about these amazing animals. They really are doing great work and have third generation now free in the forest - huge success story and really under publicised in comparison to the elephants.

Something different, educational and for a good cause. Take mosquito spray/ cover up. It’s a jungle out there… :‬

‪This is an absolute must do. The energy, dedication and knowledge of the team to helping to conserve both the Gibbons and rainforest is beyond admirable. It is obvious how much this means to all of the team and volunteers and it is entirely funded by tourists. The work they are doing is so important and meaningful so not only do you get to support the Gibbons as a species, they are just incredible to watch and listen to.‬

‪Such an amazing organisation and worth every penny learning about the Gibbons.

The team take time to explain all about the rehabilitation program and you realise the devastating affect of the tourists trade of photos.

The organisation does not get government funding so coming to learn about how the rehabilitate the gibbons is your way of giving back.‬

‪During our holidays in Phuket we had visited the unique Gibbon rehab project inside Khao Phra Thaeo National Park. Entrance charge for the forest is 200 baht for foreigners and free for locals. There is no entrance charge required for the Gibbon rehab center. At the center, we had to enter details in a tablet and then a guide took us through the center explaining the purpose of the project which is to take care of gibbons who were used as pets and then release them into the forest. The guide also told us about the different types of gibbons and their daily routine in forest. We saw different types of gibbons here and heard them singing songs in a loud tone.‬

Man sieht ca. 3 Gibbons in ihren Gehegen.

‪This project is an incredibly worthwhile place to visit to support a magnificent cause. The project works with local authorities to rescue captive gibbons, typically stolen from the wild as young for the illegal pet trade, with the poachers killing their family groups in the process. Once in the projects care, the gibbons healed and rehabilitated before their eventual re-release into the wild. So far, this project has returned about 50 gibbons to the wild, and seen many of them give birth to young in the wild. Animals under stress or in inadequate conditions rarely mate and give birth successfully, so this is a sign of this project's success in providing incredible care for these animals. I visited for the first time as a kid in the mid-2000s and remember that visit fondly. Returning for a second time over a decade later, it is great to see that the work has continued so successfully to repopulate Thailand's rainforests.

It is important to note that this is not a zoo, it is something better. The focus is not on you getting close with the gibbons, rather those are the conditions that they are fighting against. The gibbons in rehabilitation receive minimal human contact, both from their carers and visitors. The ones that you are able to see are those that are unable to be released, including severely disabled and non-native individuals. There is a strong focus on education and promoting ethical tourism. Visiting this noble cause is free, excluding the low park-entry fee, and well worth your time. The project does not receive funding from the national parks or any portion of the park's entry fee. It relies instead on the generosity of our donations, sponsorships, purchases at the gift shop, and support from volunteers. With that in mind, I would discourage people from visiting completely for free because I am confident that visiting would convince you it is deserving of a donation. I would strongly recommend visiting for anyone headed to Phuket.‬
